Chris Weidman now takes another step up the 185-pound latter, as he defeated former title contender Demaian Maia tonight at UFC on FOX 2.

Following a close opening-round that saw the two competitors exchange punches for the duration, Weidman came out for the second looking to impose his wrestling. Though he was able to successfully complete two of three takedown attempts, Maia's ability to scramble back to his feet ensured the second five minutes was contested much like the the first.

As the third got underway, Weidman's cardio came into question, having taken the fight on just 11-days notice. Despite sloppier technique displayed by both men, "The All-American" found the momentum swinging into his favor both in striking and grappling, scoring enough on the judges' cards to take a split decision victory.

With the victory Weidman improves his unbeaten record to 8-0, having emerged victorious from his toughest test to date.

Weidman looked great in the first two rounds. He clearly gassed in the third, but if he has the chance to get a proper camp in and is in better shape, he will be tough to beat.

He has a bright future in a world where Anderson Retires. I did not see a future champ tonight. If he fought Anderson which I doubt would happen we would have Anderson looking for the candid cameras and saying you got me Dana!

Funny how Rogan and Goldberg were heaping praise on the "improved standup" of Maia. He practically threw one punch for the whole fight. Typical ground specialist who all of a sudden thinks he's a striker performance if you ask me.

Exactly! I don't understand why some fighters come in dominating with a certain skill and don't stick with it. Maia came into the UFC submitting people(high level wrestlers included). I don't understand why he didn't use his Jiu Jitsu on Weidman. Stand up isn't his bread and butter..Jiu Jitsu is! smh ... Also, I understand why Weidman's cardio was bad considering the 11 days notice...but Maia had knowledge of a fight way before that. He should have been fresh in the third round ready to capitalize on Weidman's potential cardio issue..just my opinion.

Because he said he was already in shape for the fight at the time he was asked.

I remember an interview with him about a week ago (should still be on Lowkick actually) where he sounded like he had a fairly bad cold because of the weather change coming from Brazil to Chicago. Maia's normally in better shape than that, and he'd been training for Bisping, who is known for his cardio. Do you think Maia might have been sick?
