Cheick Kongo vs Roy Nelson confimred for UFC 116
Posted on April 25, 2010, 04:19 AM by Daniel CassidySources close to Cheick Kongo have confirmed the Frenchman's next bout will be against TUF 10 winner Roy "Big Country" Nelson, who himself confirmed the news via his own Twitter and Facebook accounts.
After winning TUF 10, Nelson delivered a 1st round KP to Stefan "The Skyscraper" Struve at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs Gomi on March 31st, in what was his 19th fight, currently holding a record of 15-4, the four losses coming from Andrei Arlovski, Jeff Monson, Ben Rothwell and Josh Curran. Arlovski delivered Nelson his only ko loss to date. On the show, Nelson Deveated Kimbo Slice, Justin Wren and James McSweeney, before knocking out Brendan Schaub in the finale. His fight with Kimbo was the most viewed mma show in America, with around 3.7 million viewers. The fight itself received 6 million viewers.
Kongo on the other hand, despite coming off 2 losses to Cain Valasquez and Frank Mir, followed by a submission due to strikes victory over paul buentello, recently received a renwed 6 fight deal with the UFC while fellow Wolfslair fighters Rob Broughton, Tom Blackledge and Kurt Warburton were also offered contracts with The Ultimate Fighting Championship. Kongo holds an overall record of 15-6-1, with a respectable UFC record of 8-4.
With the UFC 116 card already expected to feature Lesnar vs Carwin, W. Silva vs Akiyama, Pelligrino vs Sotiropoulus, and now Nelson vs Kongo, fans can expect fireworks on July 3rd, in MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Good matchup. UFC116 is shaping up to be a top card.
yep, I think its good matchup too. Big Country will win this one.
Agreed. UFC is putting together a good card this time.
i see big country winning, hes got some serious power in his hands and can take a punch...nelson by ko
If it goes to the ground Nelson wins. If not I see Nelson getting KOd not dishing one out. People are a bit over excited about him I think. Losing to Rothwell makes me think he will get stomped by the better HWs.
He lost that split decision to Rothwell, but that was like 3 yrs ago. I think he looks like a different fighter as of late. He seems more focused and steadily improving
Good point. I still don't see him beating Congo on the feet though.
Wow! Roy Nelson looks like he lost weight in this photo. :)
I don't see Roy Nelson losing in this fight, after watching him get punched in the face by Kimbo I know that he won't get knocked out by Kongo. Kongo is strong and has good knock out power but i don't think he is strong enough to do that.
I know Kongo's ground game is terrible compared to Nelson's so it could be possible that Nelson will stop the fight on the ground.
Winner: Roy "BigCountry" Nelson via. KO or Submission (Punches)
kongo def has enough power ko nelson but i see big country as the winner
this is what he looks like at the weigh ins, he has to cut to 265, he always looks a little bit more slim, trust me he still is the most bad ass fast bastard their is
lol oops fat*
nelson got power but i dont think he will ko kongo, NELSON wins sub. round 2
Wow, Nelson looks great! Looks like he has been really working out. I have said it plenty before, but I like this guy. Which is saying alot because I despised him on the show. I dont think this match-up is a surprise to any of us tho. I am picking Nelson, but in all honesty, Kongo is one of those fighters who could, possibly, maybe, pull it off. So I will be looking forward to the fight.
interesting,i hope Kongo is gonna stand in that fight and not try to wrestle, his wrestling is dreadful. don't wanna see that again.
if kongo tries to wrestle nelson, he will get countered or reversed, probably into a fight ending situation
If this fight goes to the ground Nelson will win if standing Cheick Kongo! And this is not weak :P
116 is goin to be stacked son. All the fights are gunna be goin off. I dont really like Nelson bc of his attitude so i hope he dosnt win but hey im sure itll be a good fight. Just hope Kongo brings a little more furiousity to the fight than he did the Buentello fight.
the word is fury... or ferocity... take your pick, but it's definitely not furiousity! And there's nothing wrong with big roy's attitude! he's a hero!
Kongo can recovers hella quick if he takes a big shot, I think Kongo can catch him standing since hes a kickboxer. I see Nelson taking him down.
I am pretty sure Nelson gameplan will be to go to the ground like he did with Kimbo. Congo stand up is maybe stronger than Nelsons
Big Country is the the sh*t. His ground game has been solid for a long time and his stand-up is looking great. Kongo hasn't seemed to improve his game much tho. He did beat Buentello, but I don't really think that is such a big accomplishment these days. I think Roy has a good shot at taking this.
I like buenetello, but you're right. Kongo is in for a tough night, if he can close the distance without getting tagged, then he might be able to take down and grind out nelson. however nelson is crafty, experienced and smart.. If I were to lay down a bet, I'd say nelson by KO or decision.
Kongo need to use his Muy Thai and kick those legs... then jab
Sweet fight card. Looking forward to it.
I'm gonna bet against the odds, and I will say there is no way Kongo will lose this fight.
Now, You can weak my previous comment but don't forget to get at me after the fight and apologize if Kongo wins it, lol
big county nelson will test Kongo's stand up and if that fails he 's going to take Kongo to the ground and ride him like a bull... Winner: nelson decision...
but Kongo can win if he utilize his leg kicks and jab... I don't know why kick boxers do not use there leg kicks.... I seen a replay of Silva vs Griffith and forest never kicked silva legs like he did rampage...
Kongo's most noteable wins: Mirko Cro Cop by decision.
OOOOooo! let's give him a 6 fight contract... jesus.. I mean muhammad, I hope Dana signs more legit black foreign fighters so the UFC can drop this political statement called Kongo ...dude's a bum.
Hanging on to names or backgrounds is not going to help the sport grow, but will keep it at "a good show". I'd personally like to see it become a legit professional sport, where ONLY the best fight the best.
you're a funny dude milkytits
Another KO for Big Country coming up.
Big Country is starting to really impress me and if he beats Kongo he has to be taken seriously as a contender.
Damn, a lot of people see a KO coming from Nelson huh? NO WAY. If Nelson stands, he goes to sleep. I think that he will win, but it will be by fighting intelligently and taking it to the ground. His stand up is improved but his strength is his BJJ and he is not dumb enough to try and out kick box an excellent kick boxer who has no ground game when his is so strong.
interesting fight, not sure what the outcome is. all i can say to Big Country is this....."protect your balls"
I'm convinced that Roy Nelson's mom must own Old Country Buffet and his dad must be the founder of Tough Man backyard boxing. Think about it- where else can he have gotten those genes?
