Chael Sonnen says he'll pass on a title shot to fight Anderson Silva

"Dana [White] and I are at a crossroads. Dana wants this to be a number one contender’s match and wants me to fight for the championship. I don’t have anything against fighting my friend Yushin Okami, who will be the champion by then, but I have unfinished business with Anderson Silva. For me, what I am lobbying for, is win or lose, I will fight Anderson Silva next. Anderson will be working his way back up, or I should say working his way down. I’m going to grab him and beat him up anyway, just for laughs, just on principle. Just for my sheer entertainment, I’m going to go slap that guy around. I don’t need his little tin belt. I’m already the champion. - For more from Chael Sonnen, visit Sherdog.com (via MMAMania.com)

While most competitors step inside the octagon with hopes of one day wearing UFC gold, it appears Chael Sonnen isn't one of them. In fact, the self-proclaimed Middleweight champ insists that, if successful against Brian Stann at UFC 136, he'd be willing to forego a title shot in favor of a rematch with Anderson Silva. Of course, its an issue that only exists if "The Spider" is dethroned by Yushin Okami at UFC 134 in Brazil. So what do you think LowKick'ers? Is Silva vs. Sonnen II on the horizon? And if so, will it be for the 185-pound strap?

no chael...you are not the champion. a submission, be it in the first 10 seconds or the last of the match, is still, a win, therefore making you the loser. i hope brian stann knocks him out, not to keep a fight from him and silva happening, as i would like to see that rematch, but someone , please, remove some teeth from this guy.

Part of me wants Stann to KO Sonnen back down and out of the top 5 so he has no hope of just talking his way into another shot at AS. BUT another part of me wants him to get past Stann so Silva can fight him without a busted rib and can just front kick his ability to talk away.

Applied in a real life situation, a submission like Silva's will certainly put an end to Chael's existence, not just his career. He was beat by Silva and he tapped out--declared defeat and surrender to the better rival. I find it outrageously hubristic, if not delusional that Chael claims that he actually won. Let's not forget that Chael had many losses in this fashion...According to his twisted logic, they are all "W's"

Aaa no stann is not gunna K.O Sonnen.. Sonnen is to smart, he's not gunna stand up with him and plus Stann is a counter puncher and Sonnen's style matches up perfectly with counter punchers just look at the Anderson fight..

As for him saying he's the champion he's dude u lost in the championship rounds lol. But Idk he probably just trying to d funny and borrow some people

Sonnen just like to hear himself talk. until I see him defend a submition then I will consider him a threat to silva.

"speede", in addition to spelling submission wrong you also forgot how Sonnen defended a deep guillotine by Nate Marquart.

Yeah, but he has yet to defend a triangle. Even back in the day Forrest Griffin submitted him with a triangle. How does one get submitted on so many occasions by the same move? One would think he'd work that out :-D ... In addition to that he's delusional. To answer the original question I think he has his hands full with Stann and that Silva will beat Okami. Who knows if we'll get to see that rematch..I'd like to see it though so Silva can shut him up once and for all.

Didn't this clown once say that any UFC fighter who doesn't want to go after the belt should be fired? Either he's absolutely full of shit or he doesn't think much of his 'friend' Yushin's chances at 134.

And claiming he's the real middleweight champion sounds so much like a pro wrestling promo it makes me want to throw up.

If you read it closer and in between the lines he is saying Yushin will beat Silva, and he wants to fight Silva next after Stann regardless if Silva is the champ or not.

yeah pillow punches that drop Silva twice!

and not to mention quite a few hard punches on the ground

that made Silva eyes roll , don't be a hater and give Sonnen the respect

he deserves, the man said he would put on a show and beat Silva and he did , he back everything he said, made the fight exciting and stand toe to toe with the so call best p4p fighter , not many fighters are willing to do that specially with stand up is not their specialty.

Sonnen got the biggest moral victory a fighter could ever achieve

and for that i admire him and respect him.

and also rigo, moral victorys mean $hit in history books, people will look at silvas record and will see 'win, round 4 triangle armbar' not 'beaten up for 4 rounds and then caught sonnen in a sub which was a huge moral victory for sonnen'

Stann will face Silva next. IMO Stann's got the best chance of beating A.S. Not sayin he will, not saying he won't.

Vitor and Stann both have sick stand up but I definetly think you Vitor is more likely to beat Silva, I still think Silva would beat either one of them though.

Well I honestly don't think Yushin has a hope in hell beating Silva, so it will be interesting to see if Chael gets passed Stann.

Stanns no joke though, and I think if theres someone to light up Chael like a christmas tree its Stann.

Long story short despite my dislike for Silva, he is the champ and most likely will retire with the belt. Hes the P4P best in the world for a reason, and like you guys said a win is a win regardless how lopsided a fight can be.

I think people are seriously underestimating Okami like they did with Chael. I think he has a fair chance if he goes in with a great gameplan.

Some people think they got Chael figured out from what he says in public and ignore that he is a serious fighter with some of the best wrestling in the division. Whatever happens between Okami/Silva and Chael/Stann I want to see Chael fighter AS again.

is it just me, or is the chael sonnen show starting to get old?

don't get me wrong, the trash talking towards the silva vs. sonnen fight is probably the most interesting build up to a fight in UFC history (as of the moment) and was very entertaining indeed.

but after a years lay-off, Chael started trash talking the whole Brazilian community in the hopes of getting a High-Profile bout (see Wandy and Lyoto), and jump into the picture immediately; which doesn't surprise me he didn't mention damien meia in the i hate brazil campaign - because meia isn't much of a crowd draw.

But, of course you go to do what you to do to keep yourself marketable.

But would anybody still pay attention if he (chael) gets knocked out by stann? and silva runs by okami?

    Just my two-cents

Chaels a funny little b!tch, but hes a machine..a beast and brian stann has a huge hill to climb against a wrestler of his caliber... hes going to be great but a win over one of the dirtiest wrestlers in the game whos huge isnt going to happen

Purely from a competitive stand point, i really would love to see Sonnen and Silva go at it again, mainly to see how Silva would approach the fight this time around. We all know Chael is one shit talking SOB, but he was damn close to winning that fight, the closest anyone has come to taking Silva's belt in fact. He shocked a LOT of people man, everyone thought he was going to get decimated (myself included) I think it will happen at some point. I think Silva should beat Okami (but you never know) imo Yushin doesn't get the credit he deserves, so it comes down to whether or not Chael can get past Stann, which is no given as Stann is a beast and is also an all american. So, IF they both win their respective fights, the plans are laid and there's every reason we will get Silva vs Sonnen 2..... : )

Chael is a brilliant a fighter but Stann is no joke and is a true test he has to get past on his return to MMA and his quest for the MW gold.

If he gets past Stann then he will get beat by Anderson and if Yushin gets the belt then Chael will beat Yushin, then get beat by Chael after it.

Cael talks a lot of shit but I htink deep down he is a good guy,

he tweeted me a hate message LOL
