Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz possible for UFC on Fox 2 Main Event

A number-one contender bout between top Middleweights Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz is reportedly in the works for the January 28th UFC on Fox 2  card.

MMAInterviews first reported the match-up, citing sources close to the fighters.

Sonnen (26-11-1) has pushed for a another shot at division Champion Anderson Silva since failing to dethrone the Brazilian back at UFC 117. Though the close nature of the bout, which saw the Team Quest fighter dominate the champ for much of their encounter only to be submitted in the final round, was expected to lead to an immediate rematch, a failed drug screening and subsequent legal troubles sidelined Sonnen for more than a year.

Upon his return, Sonnen reignighted his campaign for a rematch following a second-round submission victory over Brian Stann at UFC 136, where he demanded the two meet on Super Bowl weekend with terms that the loser would be forced to leave the division, or in his own case, the promotion. Currently nursing a shoulder injury, however, Silva is expected to remain inactive until 2012. With no clear return date, Sonnen has indicated that he'd prefer to remain active rather than wait around for the champ, which is likely what led to a proposed bout with "The Filipino Wrecking Machine."

Munoz (12-2) has steadily staked his own claim to a title shot, most recently scoring a second-round TKO victory over Chris Leben at UFC 138 to extend his current winning streak to four. After debuting with the promotion at Light Heavyweight, Munoz made the cut to 185 following his first career defeat, and has since posted an overall record of 7-1 under the UFC banner, including wins over the aforementioned Leben, Demian Maia, C.B. Dollaway, and Aaron Simpson. Munoz has also recently went on record insisting that he was more deserving of a crack at Silva's belt than Sonnen, who he says has already had his chance and lost.

UFC on Fox 2 is expected to take place January 28th from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Sonnen vs. Munoz will reportedly headline the card, while other rumored bouts include Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez and Demetrious Johnson vs. Eddie Wineland.

@soiwannabeafighter...Well if Munoz can beat Sonnen then he can certainly be a great danger to Silva...Munoz is arguably top 10 best wrestlers in MMA he can easily hold Silva down like SOnnen was doing n I'm pretty sure his sub defense is better than Sonnens so who knows he mite have an easier time with SIlva then Sonnen

He is one of the better wrestlers but he tried to be too aggresive and looks for heavy ground and pound leaving opening to escape which will be detremental to his success. Sonnen wins because he doesn't go too over the top trying ot finish with G&P and stays tight on the guy rather than creating space to drop bombs, which is Munoz' favourite thing to do

U really dont think Munoz can beat Sonnen do u? Stann is better than Munoz, and we seen what Sonnen did to him. Sonnen is on a mission to get his belt even if hes on steriods.lol This fight between Sonnen and Munoz is just to keep Sonnen n shape for June when he will face the best fighter of all-time THE SPIDER!!! If Silva is not 110% i hate to say it but Sonnen is going to take his belt

@DR3W Well in pure wrestling only I would say fighters like Cormier, King Mo, Konrad, Munoz and Davis n prolly some other fighters that I cant remember rite now are better but Sonnen being the best MMA wrestler is possible, its between him GSP and like Evans, those 3 guys mix up striking and wrestling very well

As much as I like Evans I would say his wrestling is a notch below GSP and Sonnen, if he can take down Jones a few times, if they fight, then I'll change my mind. He actually got stuffed by Tito a few times.

Im taking Chael, Okami dominated Munoz with wrestling, and Chael dominated Okami. Chael>Okami>Munoz I could be wrong though, would like to see another finish from Chael though.

MMA math doesn't work bud. Check Pettis vs. Henderson, then Guida vs. Pettis and then Guida vs. Henderson.

MMA math doesn't always work, but It does hold some value, anyways that was my reasoning for picking Chael to win.

Chael shouldn't wait until June to fight again. He's already been in the shelves for more than a year before the B. Stann fight. Munoz, being an elite wrestler and a heavy puncher, is a legitimate contender to the "people's champ..." I think the match-up is both intriguing and exciting...Obviously, if Chael loses (which I kind of suspect), then he'll be proven to be delusional about his matchless skills...

This makes the most sense. Chael is lucky to be fighting after the failed drugs test which we all know was caused by years of 'HRT'...*sniff*

If he wins there is no doubt he deserves the shot and the same goes for Munoz.

Agree with Dabs. At least the winner would be more deserving of a title shot. I would feel better knowing that Chael couldn't talk his way to the rematch. If he wins there is no denying him.

Before every @sshole starts complaining about should be Sonnen vs Silva. Im going to say this FREE Fox card looks awesome, what they should have done the first time on Fox. And Sonnen vs Munez is a more exciting match style wise.

This is a wierd style matchup , but usually two wrestlers is a wonderful fight , usually stands most of time , but i almost guarantee sonnen will shoot, but bader brillz, guida henderson, guida griffin, sherk edgar , edgar maynard even , sick fights w/ two wrestlers facing off . Plus its free ,

Well, this is probably the 2nd fight that makes more sense. Let chael and mark hash it out. They are both coming from good recent wins over good opponents. This way no one can cry about who is next.

I see where this can make some what sense. But munoz would stand no chance against silva plus where's the marketing? Sonnen vs Silva II in BRAZIL?!?!?! That would be one of the biggest PPV since UFC 100. I think the UFC needs to re-think some of the stuff they are doing. I mean come on they didnt even show the Guida vs Bendo fight. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!!

what do you mean munoz doesn't stand a chance?!? He absolutely does bud he can just slam anderson and beat the f out of him by ground and pound !!!the only way silva can win is standup cause munoz got good submission defennce!!!!!

I totally understand where your coming from. But hes a little to wild on his feet while sonnen is a bit more relaxed on his feet. That's what I was getting at. He would get picked apart and silva has great takedown defense. I would also say sonnen is a better wrestler. BUT once again whats the point of this fight? #1 contender status but I would rather see sonnen get another shot at silva.

i like what they're doing with their second outing on fox, some of the most energetic, intense, explosive fighters sanchez guillard mightymouse, instead of just the heaviest guys with all that "cos heavyweights what casual people care about"

On UFC on FOX 2 there may be Sonnen vs Munoz. On the other hand, there is UFC on FX 1 with Miller vs Guillard. Just to clarify your post.

Nice! Two very well rounded and skilled fighters.

And to all the buzzkills out there who think this will be boring, when 2 good wrestlers meet, usually it cancels out and it turns into a striking match.

But if MMA bores you unless there's a finish, feel free to go back to watching WWE.

I like this as an eliminator to face Silva. Then the better guy will face the champ, and we get to see what should be another exciting fight from the UFC. These matchups lately have been killer!

What happened to, "We'd be stupid if we didn't make this fight"? While I have nothing against Munoz, there is no way this match could be better than Silva vs. Sonnen. That match is win-win. If Sonnen wins, finally someone topples Anderson Silva and shakes up the division. If Silva wins, Chael "The Supreme Douche" Sonnen gets what is coming to him.

great matchup but who in the world wants to see this fight rather than silva vs. sonnen 2? that`s right, no one... If munoz wins, he will never beat silva in my opinion. silva needs someone who is agressive that hunts him down. i think munoz is not the right guy for that.

I can see you r a Silva fan and so am i. The spider is my favorite fighter but i think we both know Silva doesnt want to fight Sonnen again. Sonnen is so hungry for the belt and he really believes that hes the best n the world. I hope that Silva can beat him. but i think that Sonnen is n his head and will defeat him just like how GSP beats everybody by laying on top of him for 5rds.

I'm not too sure what channel TUF airs on in the states. But maybe having the finale as the next card on FOX would have made alot of sense? And I'm not too sure if the finale is a ppv but if it is I'd be happier to pay for the likes of Sanchez ellenburger and sonnen Munoz. Just my opinion.

This fight between Sonnen and Munoz is just where Sonnen can stay in shape to fight Silva in June. Munoz has heavy hands but so did Stann. I know Munoz is a good wrestler also. But Sonnen is a great wrestler and the strongest middleweight i have ever seen. We have already seen Stann and Sonnen fight for the title shot. Dana White wants Anderson to get beat so bad he cant stand it. We all know there is only one man in the world that has a chance to do it. The biggest shit talker on the planet CHAEL SONNEN!!!
