Chael Sonnen on Anderson Silva: “He’s the champion and I’m the best."
Posted on April 28, 2010, 01:40 PM by Daniel CassidyAt this stage, it's not really a surprise, but more of a case of: "what did he say this time?" but number 1 contender to Anderson Silva's Middleweight belt Chael Sonnen has again ran his mouth about the current champ, with perhaps his most outlandish claim yet, calling himself the best in the division. Sonnen, who holds an overal mma record of 24-10-1 (3-1 inside the octagon) will meet Silva at UFC 117, in Oakland, California.
Speaking to UFC.com, Sonnen said:
“You can watch him walk into a weigh in and the place is silent. He doesn’t endear his fans and he pretends he doesn’t understand them. He doesn’t embrace the media, he pretends he doesn’t understand ‘em… And yeah, I’ve had conversations with Anderson, and he was a gentlemen. He was a really nice guy. At the same time, look, he’s a grown man with earrings. He’s a grown man with saggy pants, pink t-shirts and crooked hats. Go join a gang. Don’t get in the UFC. So if you wanna hang out as a street thug, go do it. But if you get in my way, I’m gonna run right over ya.”
“He’s the champion and I’m the best. He’s the champion of the weight class, I’m the best fighter in the weight class. I acknowledge he’s champion, he must acknowledge I’m the best. There’s some reason why he’s trying not to do this fight.”
Sonnen earns his shot with notable unanimous decision victories over Dan Miller, Yushin Okami, and most recently Nate Marquardt. The champ on the other hand enters this fight with a perfect UFC record of 11-0-0, and an overall record of 26-4. He has held the belt since his first defeat of Rich Franklin on 14th of October 2006

This is a double win for Dana. He will get alot of PPV buys with all of this hype Chael is putting out and have a good turnover for a Silva card. Chael trash talking will also probally get motivated to KO Chael in devestating fashion. So in the end alot of ppv buys, and Silva returing to his exciting self atleast for this fight.

Anderson Silva conducts himself like a gentleman said Chael...so why would you advise him to join a gang!? Amateur contradiction for one that wants to be a politician (or should I say typical of?) Chael is the one behaving like a bullish, ignorant brute and HE should join an Orange County gang or something! Chael needs to start showing some class because it will look ten times worse if /whenSilva blows him away...

Silva mentioned in an interview that him changing his response to saying "He felt disrespected" in the press conference was because it's part of his job to hype up the match.
The truth is, he just went for a decision victory once he knew he had it locked against Maia - no need to put yourself at risk. That's why he switched up to Machidas style - he started using his stance and everything.
The difference is he felt pity for Mia cause he's Brazilian too...

Yeah Anderson acted foolish in his last fight but that doesn't make him any less of a fighter he still walked through all his opponents before his questionable performances and he is going to walk through Sonnen

To be honest everytime Silva has fought his opponent had the "best style" to beat him. Hendo with wrestling, Griffin with never give up attitude, Maia with bjj, Leties with bjj, and even Franklin, people said Franklin will this time he was just overwhelmed last time....Silva beat them all easily...Only way Silva is losing is if he fights people like GSP, Mir, Shogun, Rampage, Machida, Belfort...except for Belfort no one can defeat Silva in MW

I'm not sure Silva will lose to any of those guys you just named (GSP, Mir, Shogun, Rampage, Machida ) Anderson Silva will eventually lose at the end of his career (IF) he sticks around long enough but it's not going to happen anytime soon. Those guys will put on a great show Anderson Silva, but They will probably all still lose.
I personally don't think ,Silva will lose to GSP and Machida ,but Shogun the only game plan or maybe just Rampage to stop him
I think GSP is quick enough to take him to the ground, i think Machida's great counter striking and the ability to leap in and out can be useful against silva, Rampage prolly has some of the best stand up in MMA and will give Silva trouble, Shogun is one of the most well rounded fighters in mma and has great Muay Thai which he can use to take out Silva's legs which will lead to Silva slowing down (Faber vs Aldo) and Mir's size advantage alone makes it an interesting match
GSP is too small for Anderson Silva.
Machida's agains't Silva probably will never happen ( never say never though )
Rampage is not technical enough, therefore, he will be outclassed ( I love him though )
Shogun is great, but he can be a little slappy SOMETIMES
Mir is just too slow and not that powerful for Silva.
Shoguns muay thai is not at the same level as Silvas. taking out Silvas legs? Silva would probably dangle his legs in front of him like a model on a car hood and still escape. He is too fast. Rampage has punchers chance, GSP has no chance because he would not be able to keep him down and would have to start 5 rounds on their feet because there is no way he would finish Anderson sooner. Mir might have chance and Machida might but still I would favor in a bet Silva 70-30. But as far as silvas legs being taken out, Not even Aldo is fast enough to keep enough kicks hitting the spiders legs to slow him down. In my eyes Machida has best chance stylewise.I was hoping one day Chuck could have fought him when Chuck was in his prime because Chucks punchers chance at one time would have been a risky bet for him. Love him or hate him, Anderson Silva is the king of the skill hill.

Nah, I don't want Anderson Silva to let his emotions get the best of him. I want him to be focused so he can really enjoy putting the nails on top of Chael's coffin.
It will be interesting to see if and how Chael presses the action on Silva after all this shit talking. I gotta say I loved Sonnen in the Marquardt fight and how he just smothered him from bell to bell. Will he dare try something similar against a far superior striker, who's nature is to counter, and who is FAR more dangerous of his back than Nate? Should make for an entertaining fight. I don't think this will go the distance. I think the key will be Chael's own aggression - will more than likely get him slaughtered but hey it could pull of the upset.
I can't wait to see the countdown or primetime special for this fight. I'm sure it's gonna be funny.
After getting tossed by Silva in this fight, Sonnen should meet Paul Daley in a catch weight for battle of the mouths.
