Chael Sonnen campaigns for a shot at Michael "Spitsbing"

It appears Vitor Belfort is not the only Middleweight campaigning for a shot at Michael Bisping following the Brit's post-fight behavior at UFC 127.  In the midst of the controversy that has followed Saturday's event, top contender Chael Sonnen penned an open letter to UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, in which he requests a fight with Bisping upon his return. (via MMAWeekly.com)

To: Joe Silva, Matchmaker Extraordinaire, Ultimate Fighting Championship
Re: Spitsbing & his tainted victory

Joe:

If you get a chance to talk with him, please mention to your idiot-in-residence Michael Spitsbing it’ll be a little tougher to knee ME in the head when I’m charging at him like a runaway train and mincing him through the fence like a boiled potato, should we ever have the pleasure of each other’s company for a few (VERY few) moments in the Octagon.

Oh; and I’d suggest to him being a little careful about spitting on any of MY cornermen, since any one of them can beat him up as badly as I can. Thanks ever so much.
Hope all is well.

-Chael Sonnen

Sonnen's UFC contract was temporarily "frozen" pending the resolution of personal issues that have plagued the Team Quest member since his submission loss to division Champion Anderson Silva back in August.  While there has been no official date set for Sonnen's return, a match-up with Bisping, who improved to 21-3 on Saturday, could be next for the Oregon native.

@gabe. i like chael but im also a brit and like bisping but everyone is talking like this is 100% win for chael. This is a guy with a record of 25-11, and im not saying he is rubbish but people are talking like bisping is facing anderson. Chael relies heavily on his wrestling and although bisping may not be the same level, his take down defense is good, his jj is good and his ability to be on his back and not get punished is good. I like this fight and if bisping really believes he deserves a title shot then he has to beat these guys so its a proper test.

Although I think Sonnen is a more guaranteed win due to his style (and not to mention the entertaining pre-fight trash talk) .he won't be able to give Bisping the brutal and viscious beat-down that he so badly deserves like Vitor can.

My vote is still for Vitor vs Bisping

Ya, can't strike with Vitor and can't wrestle with Chael. Bisping vs Brian Stann or Damian Maia would be better matchups for him. Or even give him to Okami for a number 1 contender fight - Okami should win and finally get his title shot.

No one can strike with Vitor. He's the best in the division. After he beats silva he should ko Bisping.

I disagree, Stann looked great against Leben but so did Bisping and I honestly do believe Leben's corner when they said he was sick and that's why he was off that night. Stann has beat one real tough guy in his career and that's it I wouldn't be too quick to write off Bisping in that fight.

I would have to respectfully disagree. From what I can tell and see of Brian Stann, the only fighters that are going to be able to deal with him are going to be top-flight fighters in the division and Bisping has yet to prove to me that he's a top-flight fighter.

However, as always, the only way for us to tell is to have them fight; not speculate about it.

    Cheers,

Nice to actually be able to have a civilized discussion on here where people disagree. You very well may be right about Stann but I want to see him fight some more tough competition before I put him up there with top flight fighters. That being said, I don`t think Jorge Santiago is going to pose too much of a threat to Stann and Bisping is not looking too good in his next fight if it is either Sonnen or Vitor so we probably won`t see this matchup anytime soon.

Honestly Chael is a horrible matchup for Vitor. Several of his losses are to wrestlers who took him down and beat him up. (Couture twice, Tito Ortiz, and Dan Henderson). That's exactly what Chael will try to do, and he will probably succeed.

really... why is it everytime chael vs anderson fight comes up stupid anderson fans run back to there bandwagon and grab the rib excuse or he wasnt trying?? And chael was using steroids for hypergonadism a problem from cutting weight in wrestling, he told the commision to late he was using them. If he fights Anderson again he will crush him again but this time if he isnt ****y and going for KO/TKO in the last 2min and is cautious of subs and stays in half guard he will win...

Now with bisping he will destroy him, but with vitor it will be a great fight vitor is my favorite fighter and chael 2nd but it could go either way

Wow... comparing Chael to Lindland. You are too stupid to argue with but I'm going to try anyway. Chael is in his prime, Lindland is over 40. He is nothing more than a good corner man at this point. Wrestling is NOT MMA. Lindland did not attempt a takedown in that fight.

Chael's accomplishments at 185: Beat Marquardt, Okami, Dan Miller and Paulo Filho.

Vitor's accomplishments at 185: got KTFO'd by Silva. Great fighter, but NOT a great middleweight at this point.

    Chael would destroy him.

Beautiful! I'd love to see this fight. I think it'll be the toughest fight Bisping's ever had but I wouldn't write him off no matter how incredibly good Sonnen is. I think it'll be competitive and he should keep training his triangle like no-body's business, cuz Chael never seems to learn his lesson on that move.

Okami would beat Bisping easily, so would Chael, and even Vitor would win unless he decides to be gun shy and not exchange with Bisbing. Bisbing has NO power in his strikes, sub-par grappling, and is no where near ready to face top 5 MW talent. That being said I'd love to see him step up and get knocked back down. Just like he did when he face Heno. Bisbing will NEVER be anything more than a gate-keeper.

Nah if he'd just lost to Rivera, he would have become a gatekeepr, but he's not. He's in the contender zone, but he should never have taken that fight he had nothing to gain. He should've got one of the top guys after Akiyama, but I don't think there was anyone available to be honest so he got a practice run on Rivera. This is what I can't accept about people saying the kind of things you're saying Boner. Any of the top pundits out there, including Bas, most other fighters without Bias, would put Bisping up there, just on logic, so it seems to uncover that guys like you are arguing based on a general dislike of his character and not logic. This will invariably make you wrong.

If he keeps improving in all areas? Yes! And providing Anderson vacates his title. I mean come on I'm not mad here. That guys a living Bruce Lee - Mach ...he's the man! But Do you think Okami, Marky or Maia could become champ? Only Sonnen could take Silva right now. But does that mean these guys aren't the top contenders? What do you think a gatekeeper is? Cuz I put someone like Chris Leben in gatekeeper staus at the moment...he wasn't before he got demolished by Stann. Why are you being a Boner??? I'm not saying Bisping's gonna run through everyone and win the title. I'm just saying he's around about their level and could give most of them a good challenge at least. That's a contender not a gatekeeper.

Ok I will. Bisping has two wins out of his entire record against tough guys. Both decisions. Most of his record shouldn't even be considered as professional.

He has incredibly bad habits. He doesn't tuck his chin, when he back pedals he actually sticks it out. He doesn circle in different directions but predictably for people to time perfectly. His jiujitsu is acceptable but not great compared to opponents he has to beat. He has never beat a too ten guy. He is a good fighter but not great. If he humbles him self he may be able to train better. The weird thing is his mistakes are things that would be fixed by repetition so I don't know how he is still making them.

I agree that he's still got a lot of improvements to make although he's always getting better. Hands, chin, footwork, and combos with kicks and kicking distance need to be worked on. I keep seeing beautiful opportunities for jab, cross, head kick or jab, head kick the bread and butter kick boxing combos. He seems to have the potential to do it really well but just needs some adjustments on distance, timing and deception.

I don't like the guy, but I also see he has average talent at best. His hands are fast and accurate but lack power. He has good timing with his takedowns, but the takedowns himself are not technically sound. His Jits is very average. If you care to let men know what skills he has that you think make him better than I said please let me know. My personal feelings have very little hold to my judgement of there talent.

That being said I'm no Joe Silva either.

Sonnen is coming off a loss to the champ in which he dominated 99% of the fight. Vitor is coming off a loss to the champ in which he got KTFO'd less than 3 minutes into the fight. There's a huge difference.

There's also a huge difference between fighting Jorge Rivera and Anderson Silva. Okami is next in line for the MW title. He has no reason to fight Bisping.

If you're a Bisping fan, you better hope he gets Okami though, because he actually has some chance of pulling that one out. Vitor will KTFO and Chael will take him down and beat the crap out of him for 15 minutes.

    @ Cage

I know. This will be pretty funny, man. Truly, if he thought was Rivera did was bad, I can't even begin to imagine what Sonnen can come up with. If I were Chael, I'd probably choose to pick up where JR left off and re-visit the comical videos, subject; do some more, but with the Sonnen spin.

My thought on this - Sonnen wants to get under you skin and if he thinks he is actually doing it, then it's going to be like pouring fuel on a fire. And I give Bisping 0 chance of getting under Sonnen's skin, even though there's loads of ammo; steroids, bank fraud, snitch etc.

In the ring - Bisping would get crushed. And chances are, if The UFC thinks this is a fight the fans want to see, then they just might make it happen. Problem is though, when will Sonnen be ready / allowed to fight? Bisping took no damage, he could fight on the next card. And of course, the other guy who took no damage in his last fight, was Vitor. I'd also wouldn't mind him getting Stann, either; that would also be a good beating.

I though I was losing my nut but that was actually the most sensible post here.

15 year fan boys on this site and many others spoil logical discussions on fighters. They descend into inane babbling .

Perfect. Keep counting him out and he'll probably keep winning. I'll worry more the day you say he might actually win

I know it's killing you the fact that he keeps winning when you keep thinking saying he'll lose, but try and show a little impartiality.

I really don't understand some people on here.

They cheer on a guy who speaks shit all the time, takes steroids, is a fraudster and overall piece of shit.

    Over

A guy who is a family man, who has tried his best to contain his emotions to boiling point.

    Good god

It might be because there's hate for Bisping for the cheap illegal knee to some Jorge guy's head. And Chael's hype for the fight will be worth watching. :)

How is chael even in a position to hype anything?

    His reputation is in tatters.

We'll never know if the knee was intentional so how can we all speculate?

While I don't agree with the knee, I sure as hell don't feel the slightest bit sorry for jorge rivera. He tried to humiliate and shame a fellow fighter and in the end it was he who looked stupid.

Regardin bisping vs sonnen, hmm. IF and that's a big IF bisping can keep at least 60% of the fight standing up then I see bisping taking a decision.

Sonnen's wrestling is too good for bisping to tko him, as soon as he is in trouble he will shoot.

My bet is sonnen via decison, although I'm still shocked that this guy is even in the ufc.

Bisping being a cheat compared to sonnen? PLEASE

Regardless of what you say about Sonnen's reputation and it's all true, it won't matter; fairly or un-fairly. Sonnen is a master of trash talk...the master of trash talk...people will watch it, listen and probably laugh.

Trust me - I'm as un-impressed as anyone with Sonnen and what we've learned of him in the last year, but Dana doesn't seem to give a crap, the commissions aren't going to stop him from fighting (steroids or otherwise, I'm not sure) and subsequently, we all have to accept it. I think Bisping could go on all day about Sonnen and his steroids our fraud, but unless he really knows how to sell it and be funny about it, then he'll lose the trash talk battle, because no one is either going to care or listen; we all know what Sonnen is, there is no point in reiterating the case.

And on the issue of cheating - I'm no fan of Bisping's but I wouldn't and haven't accused him of cheating. The knee was illegal sure, but I wouldn't call it cheating; it was un-sportsman like. What Sonnen did (the steroids) was clearly cheating; as was what he did with the mortgage applications and loans. Chael Sonnen is a cheat; both in the ring and in life. And for some reason, he is still in The UFC. We all have to deal with that.

As much as everybody hates on Bisbing, unfortunately he is a hard fighter to beat. He doesn't exactly wow you in any area of his game, but when he puts it all together its hard to beat him. However, I can't see him having the tools to compete with the top guys of the division (Vitor, Chael, Andy), but against guys like Stann, RIvera, Wand, Leben Maia ect he will put up good fights.

You are such a gullible fool in believing the top guys are Vitor and Chael. Them tow alone have over 20 losses between them!!!!

Chael proved it with decisive victories over Okami, Nate, and the domination of Anderson. Vitor is comparable to BJ Penn at WW, he can beat any one at any given day based on talent and potential, hes just yet to prove it IMO.

    LOL!

I would love to see a fight between Bisping and Sonnen. I think MMA fans would be guaranteed entertainment.

It seems like a win-win situation for the fans.
