Chael Sonnen drops another bomb: a controverial Open Letter to the fans
Posted on July 9, 2010, 12:50 AM by Joey SantosusOver the last several months Chael Sonnen has used every outlet at his disposal to continue his verbal onslaught directly aimed at his UFC 117 opponent, middleweight champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Though the king of the 185 pound division has always been the focus of Sonnen's criticism, others have been caught in the cross-fire, including Silva's manager Ed Soares, as well as his Black House training partners the Nogueira brothers.
While Anderson has remained silent, confident that his actions on fight night will speak louder than any words, members of Black House have declined to take the high-road as of late, firing back in recent interviews and calling the challenger an unworthy opponent.
Sonnen, never short on words, recently sent an open letter addressed to his fans ahead of the August 7th showdown to MMABay.co.uk earlier today:
“Hi, everybody! Remember me? Your ol’ buddy Chael? Y’know I spend most of my time fightin’, which doesn’t leave much time for writin’, but things being what they are, I’ve decided to take a moment or two, and fire up the ol’ Olivetti typewriter, put in a fresh ribbon, and share some of my recent thoughts with you….
Firstly, I’ve gotten a significant amount of feedback regarding my “correspondence” with MMA…..”Journalist” Jon Lane…So….To any and all members of the media: I’m always happy to talk and share my time and ideas with you. And I appreciate your efforts in contacting me, and instead of ‘circling the wagons’ around a “fellow journalist”, for applauding my efforts to….FIX things. Do me a favor, guys. Don’t be so hard on JonJon. He’ll get it. Bring him along, help him out here & there. I kinda like him. And Jon…..No hard feelings. Really. If you re-read our correspondence in the cold, hard, light of day, you’ll see I was trying to….HELP you.
I never expected you to be Umberto Eco; but those questions… guy! I mean COME ON. So buck up, little soldier. If you fall off, just get right back on – even if it’s only a keyboard you’re getting on.
And Lil’ Nog…..I read your appraisal of the upcoming fight betwixt your pal Anderson and yours truly and, I’ll be damned, you are one sharp dude…. about as sharp as a bag of wet mice.
Do yourself a favor: have your mouthpiece permanently installed in your mouth so you can’t speak at all. Have them feed you with a tube like a coma patient. You’re not doing Anderson any good and you’re sinking your own ship too. You say I’m not qualified to fight Anderson…Which means that the UFC brain trust – that thinks I AM and are also YOUR BOSSES — are idiots. It also means Ed Soares – Anderson’s manager and YOUR MANAGER TOO – doesn’t know what he’s doing, either. Smooth, guy. Very smooth. Do you have any other brilliant ideas or scathing critiques you care to impart to the UFC Brass or your own manager? Maybe that shot Sokodjou hit you with was worse than it looked (if that’s even possible).
You seem like a nice enough guy, and I have no real beef with you (Oh, and speaking of beef: If you can turn your disk over at the Rodizio once in awhile and get down to “185,” there’s gonna be a new sheriff there in less than a month who’ll be happy to ride you right back out of town on a rail). So please see this as the kind of well-intentioned advice I would give to a friend or training partner. And if you lose a few (you looked like Roy Nelson in a Frankenstein mask for that Brilz fight… which you lost, buddyboy), we can scrap in the Fall.
And Ed, I saw your recent comments. Not bad work. Hats off. You come across as professional and accountable in every respect…which makes your inability to control, explain or denounce Anderson’s behavior quite puzzling to me. THAT’S one of the main reasons we are where we are with all this: because you can’t make him fight.
You can’t explain why he does what he does and you refuse to give a consistent, rational explanation for it. It’s like you keep trying to sell the kids faulty fireworks that turn around after 10 feet and come screaming back and hit them in the eye or blow their hands off.
Are you aware that you represent the generally acknowledged best fighter in the world in the premier promotion on planet Earth and that the president of that company has promised to FIRE HIM for his behavior?
Aren’t you just a little embarrassed by that?
And that’s got NOTHING to do with me, or even this fight.
Imagine: Your team is on the two-yard line in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, but your star quarterback disregards the head coach’s instructions and calls a play where he throws the ball to a popcorn vendor in the sixth row, then eats a piece of turf and craps in his helmet on the 50-yard line.
Do you know who he’s REALLY mad at? NOT the fans or the opposing team…he’s mad at daddy; he’s mad at the coach!

Is your fighter insane? If he is – and you therefore cannot reasonably predict his behavior – isn’t it incumbent upon YOU to find a way to fix it?
Don’t you owe that to the sport?
To the fans?
To his boss, Dana White?
And lastly… don’t you owe a debt to HIM and his long-term psychological well-being? Shouldn’t you get him the help he needs, before one of his irrational, unexplainable acts causes himself or someone else genuine harm? If he’s irrational and uncontrollable, put him in a psych ward. If he’s fine, prove it by giving a legitimate, rational, explanation for his actions in Abu Dhabi. I’m the one who has to fight him.

As Chael wraps another barrage of brash words, the buring question remains.... Are these displays of hostility genuine, or the actions of an opportunistic challenger, merely capitalizing on the scrutiny amassed following the champion's controversial bout at UFC 112?

It is always a combination of game plan from both fighters and luck from both fighters. I never feel a fight is luck all the way through and the same thing with game plan.

I don't know where TF you did your research, but it wasn't anywhere with accurate records. Sonnen was an alternate. He never made the olympics. Hendo was an actual olympic wrestler, and all his wrestling credentials combined put Sonnen's to shame. Hendo also has more wins in MMA, fought better guys, and all around has better striking and more power.
Silva will beat Sonnen easier than he beat Hendo.

It is a rambling dissertation. I'm sure it is what he believes and feels. I'm not entirely nuts about the style of it, but I have no problem with the tone or tenure of it. This is the fight business. The sport is actually more interesting with mouth pieces like CS, in it.
UFC News - referred to this rant as "hostile". I don't read that at all. What I take from this, as I have taken from every interview or statement that he gives, that is more matter-of-fact, dispassionate rhetoric.
I see a guy who calmly and confidently speaks his mind, does not care whether it pleases or displeases and stays on message; his message is, he'll beat Anderson. Hi's extended message to the camp is, he'll fight anyone; including Big Nog.
Like him or hate him (I personally like him), he's an interesting, articulate, witty and colorful guy; no other fighter has piqued my interest as much, in terms of fighting The Spider.
Win or lose - Chael will force AS to fight; and that's a good thing.

I'm quite sure he is a nice fellow. I'd have no problem in having CS to my home and to the family table for dinner. he's a great guy from what I can tell; as is the same way, I'd have NP about having AS to my home; he's a great guy, too.
I just think, for the purposes of this fight, that it's a good match and I know this, CS, is NOT afraid of the guy. That, right there, will allow/account, for a great fight; win or lose, for either competitor.

I don't mind what Chael is doing...kinda tired of listening to him, but all this physiological warfare should AT LEAST make Anderson come out on August 7 and actually fight like the best pound for pound fighter he is supposed to be and stop this clowning around business. On one hand, I'm hope that Chael beats Anderson only because of his previous actions in the ring however on the other hand, I sure wouldn't mind seeing Anderson knock out Chael in spectacular fashion without any clowning around. You don't think he has even a small chance? I can't stand Chael but I would give him about a 10% chance of winning. If he can get takedowns and control him I think he can win. The bad part about that for Chael is he can't pound or he would most likely get submitted. Doing it for 5 rounds would be hard as well. Who knows though? Wrestlers have been pulling out fights lately.

When I read Chael letter I though somebody call the men in white coats. What a ****. His arrogance is at a world class level. The saying a legend in his own mind comes to thought. Here is a sad picture of a man not running out of ideas but so full of him self that he actually believes that his latest exploit in sending an open letter will be seen as a wow. Lets try and put this in prospective. Chael says to him self right I'm going to write an open letter and the twisted mind that I have will be disguised because every body is so focused on giving Anderson no respect for Abu Dhabi and anything against him can and will be absorbed. So many people want to see him get his arse kicked I'll get a lot of support. Chael trying to be a advocate representative of the sport is a joke. Dana must be cringing right now. except for the fact that Dana wants to see a reversal of Abu dhabi I think the person who needs a talking to right now is Chael. As much as this sport is unpredictable the chances of Chael beating Anderson is about the same as me getting signed by the UFC in the next 24hrs.
