Brian Stann says a "fist fight" won't affect his friendship with Chael Sonnen
Posted on August 20, 2011, 04:55 PM by Joey SantosusTop Middleweight contender Brian Stann, who will face Chael Sonnen at UFC 136, discusses his opponent, as well as his evolution as a fighter at Jackson's MMA. Stann reveals that he and Sonnen had plans to train together prior to their bout being scheduled, but says that a fist-fight won't change their friendship.
Brian Stann
"I thought I was going to fight Mark Munoz, he thought he was going to fight Wanderlei Silva, and we actually talked about, well, if those are our two match-ups next, maybe we'll link up and find a place to do some training. I can learn off his wrestling and he can get a guy to strike against him like me, who can throw big shots. So we agreed on that and we saw each other a week later at UFC 132. The UFC sat us right next to each other, along with other fighters, and we're all shaking hands and talking to each other, etc. And, literally, two days later I get the call and Joe Silva says, 'Hey, this is the fight.' - and that's it. Chael e-mailed me that night and he said, 'Brian, I can't sleep with the news tonight. You know I consider you a friend and that won't change on my side.' And I e-mailed him back and said, 'You know Chael, it's just a fist fight. In the big scheme of things it means very little. Let's get out there, let's get after it but after this, nothing changes. It's no big deal."

Truly professional approach to the fight. I can think of a few fighters that could stand to learn something from this.
sheeaatt...i think i saw arlovskii.
Stann is a former defending Champion, not a future Champ, he has already tasted it before, he is hungry for another Title,.
Sonnen is still going to wrestle bang him for three rounds to a decision win though
Going from a job where losing would cost him his life to one where you might just get a few bruises...a fist fight really isn't that big of a deal i guess.
Does anyone else think Chael Sonnen is in love with Brian Stann? Not just admiration, but full-on "civil union, live in San Fransisco with 2 small chihauhas" love.
look Chael is a prick but to contact Stann to help out veterans
hey man is awesome cause for alot of guys who have did more than1 tour which is alot have a very hard time getting jobs some is big to reach
out is cool
@Pacifist, I think after Chael sees this interview it will finally spark his $hit talking. After seeing Stann say he's tougher than Chael, I don't think Sonnen will be able to resist. Chael is about as tough as they come, and so is Stann. I think Chael is sandbagging when he says he will be ring rusty though. Chael by decision of ground and pound tko. Also, the only thing that may keep Chael from talking about Stann this whole time, is just cuz he may know it'll hurt his fan base no matter what. With Stann being this guy that so many people see as a hero.
Yeah thats like it should be Friends can fight but teammates not
See, that's the kind of person Chael really is. People jump on him and say he's a nasty human being, when the reality is, he can be a nice guy. Of course no one wants to acknowledge that, but that's okay. People can continue with their character assassination of Chael Sonnen. It makes no difference to me.
As for the fight, I think it's gonna be a real good one. Anyone that's seen Brian Stann's ground game knows he's no joke off his back. His jiu-jitsu coupled with his striking make him a very dangerous opponent, and it's good to hear that Chael isn't looking past him.
Why, cause he has a man crush? So he's a good guy now that he is giddy over Stann? In the end he's still a liar, a cheater and an in-apologetic felon.
People do acknowledge it. When it actually happens. The only people he's been friendly to publicly lately is Stann and Okami. I even said it in the post of the video w/ him and Okami, if he acted like he did in that video he would have many more fans.
Sure, his "controversial" interviews made him well known pretty much overnight, but he doesnt really need to put on that act anymore. He should just be himself without all the trash talk since he doesnt need to trash talk to pick a fight - he's recognized as a top contender now so it's unneccessary.
yeah cause we gave Brazil the internet he floats in a grey
area alot were its almost to far but is good at it. he is slowly growing
on me
this kind of talk make the fight boring. there going to be too much hugged, not interested.BTW Chael might be gay.
Don't ask .. Don't tell
what a good guy! hes the kinda dude that it wouldnt bother me if i caught him shtoinking my daughter...i think i have a new favourite mma fighter
I know this will not sit well with patriotic types, but the fact is guys like Stann are mere mercenaries doing the bidding of corrupt regimes be they elected or self imposed. Whilst his actions can be brave and loyal to his country, his folly is that he risks his life for questionable causes and can become a tool of evil. Sonnen's kiss arsing is a fine example of what is wrong with so many of us in this world. We should question everything and form our own opinions.
Sorry for raising this on a MMA thread but it seemed relevant to Sonnens (and many fans) behaviour.
Stann is a Marine, not a mercenary. If he worked for Xe services (formerly Black Water) then yes, he'd be a mercenary. Mercenary: "motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain ... material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces ...". Politics aside, get your facts straight.
Iraq was about private gain of the Bush regime. Get your facts straight.
PS: The corruption of western regimes means that any personnel of the armed forces are effectively mercenaries and will remain so, so long as the corruption endures.
hit sharp if you want cheal to get knocked unconscious.
for some reason i get more excited about a fight when there is a mutual respect between the fighters as opposed to a bunch of trash talk and posturing stemming from boyish insecurities
