Brendan Schaub: If I can beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, I've got a good argument for a title shot

"When they were asking people to fight, no one said anything. Then when the fight got confirmed, it was like, 'I wish I had that fight.' Yeah, you weren't saying that before. I'm not OCD about it, but I definitely set goals, and I'm smart about my future, that's for sure. That would be five wins straight. If I can beat Nogueira convincingly in his own backyard, I think you look at the layout of the heavyweight division, and I've got a good argument for (a title shot). - For more from Brendan Schaub, visit Sports Illustrated (via MMAMania.com)

Since coming up short against Roy Nelson back in 2009, Brendan Schaub has reeled-off four consecutive victories in the UFC. After back-to-back stoppage wins over Chase Gormley and Chris Tuchscherer, Schaub outworked one-time title contender Gabriel Gonzaga en-route to a unanimous decision before scoring a third-round knockout victory over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 128.

While each win appeared a bit more impressive than the last, he'll now face his toughest test to date in the form of veteran Heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. If successful against the former PRIDE Champion, "The Hybrid" will extend his winning streak to five and make his place as a top contender hard to deny. But, what do you think LowKick'ers? Would a win over Big Nog in his home country be enough to earn Schaub a crack at the gold?

I like Schaub, but there will still be too many people ranked above him in the division for him to get a title shot. He has done nothing to merit being ranked above Mir, Carwin, Lesnar, or JDS. He needs to beat a top 5 guy first. The quality of his recent wins is also questionable because they have all been against guys who although they are legends, are about to retire.

Look at the hoops Dos Santos had to jump through to get a title shot...He is at least a few fights away

give me a f*cking break man.... good argument to get a title shot after beating an older guy who is coming out a loss? sure great argument...

one thing is certain, you are smart about your future picking older guys who are way slower than you but i really really hope minotauro beats the breap of you...

I wouldnt be surprised if he asks Randy to come back from retirement if he goes through minotauro...

hell no, he's been beating people that are coming off losses, would be the same deal with Nogueira if he beats him this weekend. i'd say he needs to beat a at least 2 fighters that are ranked top 5 before he has a case.

If Noguiera beats Shaub would he get a title shot?

No... so then why the hell does Shaub think he deserves one if he beats Minotauro?

    LOL ..

Schaub hasn't fought anyone who isn't in the twilight of their career.

The only time he did was Roy Nelson .. Schaub didn't even make it out of the first round.

I don't think he will ever be top 5 in HW.

    Junior

    Overeem (it will happen)

    Carwin

    Mir

    Herman

    Struve

    Mitrione

    Nelson

Lets see him fight 1 or 2 of these guys and then we can talk Cain.

To be fair, Schaub only had a couple pro fights when he fought Nelson, it was his UFC debut, and he was winning until Nelson landed a perfect punch. I would definitely pick him to beat Struve and Herman, and probably Nelson and Mitrione as well.

To say he will never be a top 5 HW is not really fair either. He's a world class athlete and despite being relatively inexperienced, is already one of the better strikers in the HW division. He also trains with one of the best HW MMA wrestlers in the world in Carwin. He could easily be a title contender - not after this fight, but he's not more than 2 or 3 wins away.
