Brazilian MMA Fans sound off on Chael Sonnen

News broke earlier this week that Chael Sonnen would not be traveling to Brazil to corner his training partner Yushin Okami when he faces Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 134. Sonnen, citing a request from one of Okami’s sponsors and the threat of arrest backed out of his planned trip.

Had Sonnen made the trip, suffice it to say that he would not have had the red carpet rolled out for him upon his arrival. The highly ranked middleweight has seized every opportunity afforded to him to disparage Brazilian fighters such as Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, Lyoto Machida and the Nogueira brothers.

Ariel Helwani is in Brazil and he recently spoke to some Brazilian MMA fans to get their take on the UFC’s return to Brazil as well as their opinion of Chael Sonnen.

Chael needs to go there and start shit up!!! I'm sure no Brazillian would touch him unless they want a nuke bomb knocking at their door.

I think Chael is just scared I mean come on, this guy gives no legitimate excuse for not showing up, like Dana said it's a good decision on his part. People that don't like being disrespected, especially about something they have no control over.

Chael would rather give birth to a donkey before he'd ever admit to being scared. My point is simply this, there are good reasons but none that he'll ever admit to.

Don't get it twisted,Chael went head up With A.S. for a CHECK, same reason he wants to fight Machida is for a CHECK....You're giving this dump truck to much credit.

If Sonnen was there he would have changed some their minds of what they think of him. Im sure he would have busted some more jokes, and some Brazilians would realize he is just joking, since hes a bit of a comedian.

(Lots of comedians are granted more leniency with their insulting jokes)

Even if he's joking, how do you think Americans would respond if somebody like Shogun was saying those things about America in his publicized interviews?

That type of shit is what makes us Americans look bad to the rest of the world.

I would laugh and think hes funny? Im not sensitive unlike some people who wear their heart on their sleeves. Other countries shit on America anyways, so they themselves are hypocrites for not liking some Americans talk shit on them.

In the end, countries are hating on how we are bad at handling our money yet are armed to the teeth and are over confident. Oh and we love food.

Sure, you can laugh, but that dont make it any less of a **** move to say those things.

Other countries do the same thing? If that's true then it should be simple to find interview of other MMA fighter saying the things Chael does about America in public media. You think it's a coincidence that those Brazilian fighters had more respect for us than we have for them? Until you find some examples to back up your claims, your just talking out your ass.

Just look at how many Americans hate Silva and felt disrespected because "He wont speak in english in his interviews". The things Sonnen actually said are much more disrespectful than that. So imagine how they would react if he said those things about us?

Sure every country says jokes about others, many joke about ours and look at the jokes Americans have about Canada, France, Korea, Japan, etc. And those jokes are usually told in appropriate settings. But it's a completely different type of disrespect if you say these things in public media directed specifically towards people. it makes us look bad

You can claim you wouldnt care all you want as if that means something on a national scale, but it's like I said earlier: if someone like Shogun/Silva/Machida/JDS came in to an interview saying those same things about Americans, if he acted respectful around Americans faces and then talked trash about them when they werent around (like he did Wand), if he made a joke of our country as a whole just to piss off a couple opponents to try to get a fight, then Americans would hate him and boo him just the same as Brazilians do Sonnen.
