Brandon Vera not released from the UFC

It appears Light Heavyweight Brandon Vera will remain a UFC fighter after all.

Vera (11-6) was cut last month after coming up short against Thiago Silva at UFC 125, which marked his third consecutive loss with the promotion.  However, reports have recently surfaced indicating that because the bout will likely be ruled a "no contest," Vera's name has been restored to the roster.

FiveOuncesofPain.com initially reported the news of Vera’s return.

The likelihood of the January 1st match-up being overturned stems from earlier reports that the Nevada State Athletic Commission had cleared 14 of the 15 competitors who underwent drug testing for the UFC 125 event, but were "still processing" one fighter's sample. Among the names cleared, Silva's had been omitted, leading to speculation that the Brazilian had failed the drug screening.

While there have been no further details released surrounding the test at this time, if positive, not only will the fight be ruled a "no contest," but Silva will likely face a fine and suspension as well.

Vera is recently recovered from a broken nose suffered in the final round of the New Year's Day match-up, which resulted in a mandatory medical suspension.  There is no scheduled return date at this time.

That does not make any sense. I bet Dana is the one that gave Vera another chance regardless of that "No Contest" that is totally ridiculous! Silva has not officially failed the drug test yet.

Vera has so much talent hopefully this made him realize how close he was to losing his dream and will make him motivated to really put the effort in.

I'd hardly say Vera has a "solid wrestling game". He got taken down over and over again by Silva, who's primarily a striker. And despite having a brown belt in BJJ, he has no way of getting back up or even working for a sub when he's taken down, so I guess he just turtles up and lets dudes smack his ass.

just because he was an olympic alternate for wrestling doesnt he's a solid mma wrestler. i cant comment on his pure wrestling skill, but i know he needs to work on him mma wrestling. the silva fight shows how weak it is, regardless if silva took preformance enhancers or not.

I think it was really unfair, I mean he didn“t lose to Randy, and if Thiago was on something then why would you even cut him.

I don't know but, Thiago looked a lot bigger than he usually does in that fight. It did seem kinda strange to me.

Agreed, that fight with Couture was so close and Bones is destroying everyone and the fight against Silva he just looked tiny and completely overwhelmed, I'm really glad he's getting another shot.

It's more about him becoming a liability. The man had his face demolished 2 fights in a row. You can say Jones is on a streak but you dont see his other opponents with broken orbitals and plates in their face. Followed by Thiago putting his nose on the side of his face like mr potato head.

It's becoming a danger to have him in there. Hopefully he wakes up and gets his head back in to the game properly. He been passive on defense, he needs to get on the offensive.

Yes, It was really unfair for the UFC to cut Vera, but I still think Thiago would have still beaten him even if he was clean.

This is an awesome opportunity for Brandon Vera, he's able to stay in the UFC, hopefully he'll take that as a sign and train harder than he ever has, so he can get back on the winning track.

Yeah they should use this tactic more often, threatening to cut the loser, at least it would ensure fighters will come prepared to fight for survival.

theres alot of fights where no1 has to say it they just know they're on the chopping block, how do u want them the threaten to cut em? have Dana walk into the middle of the cage with fireworks and people chanting asshole while he announces loser will be cut? this isn't the WWE it's a business if you can't tell when ur numbers going to be called either ur not clear headed or your team isn't telling you

It makes a perfect sense. Silva was juiced up and if it was not a big deal than we would not have an athletic commission looking after it.

Vera looks lost whenever the fight hits the ground anymore .. doesn't matter who he fights.

You know, this isn't brought up much but if it is proven that Silva was jacked up on something, there is going to be much more talk for stepping up drug testing.

That nose break Vera received was wicked bad not to mention the way Silva toyed with him and was disrespectful with the b*tch slapping ect.. It will now give people a chance to point specifically to what can happen when fighters are juiced.

    Finally a good call.

    BV's last three losses:

Randy Couture - Vera won the fight. The judges blew the call.

John Jones - everyone loses to JJ. Can't penalize BV for that.

Thiago Silva - BV lost to (apparently) a cheat.

When I heard about this a couple of days ago, the first thing that went through my head was...what are they going to do with Vera and that decision? Apparently, they've made the right call and reversed themselves.

What bothers me about this - is that the decision has been rendered, the fans gone home (with what they thought was the decision) and the "wagers" have been paid out. How would you like to have bet Vera that night...lost...and then read this? I'd be pissed. Somehow, The UFC needs to "guarantee " that none of its fighters are on steroids. This could be achieved through random testing, contracting and (significant financial) penalties, firings and an "awareness" (ad) campaign denouncing steroids. Heck, The UFC already has such a program in place, with its USMC awareness campaign; Heaven forbid (now) that any of us can watch The UFC without having USMC recruiting commercials shoved in our faces. Can't they do the same thing about steroids? Every commercial break run something that denounces steroids and The UFC's policy on them. Why can't / won't they do this? It would go a long way in preventing this type of BS.

And to the best of my knowledge - StrikeForce has yet to have to do this; reverse a decision...54 days later...after the decision was registered.

The lhw division is stacked. Somebody has to get cut. That also goes for the liw division unless some of them move down a weight class to save their arses.

I'm a big fan of both fighters, but Barry would kill Vera. Brandon, disappointingly, talks a good game, but never seems to deliver. Which is a drag, because he's got great stand-up and even a decent ground game. He just doesn't seem to have a killer instinct and might even be a bit of a quitter; I hate to say.

As to Pat - I'd like to see Barry come down to 205. I don't think it would be that hard for him; he does carry extra weight. He would be a force to recon with in the LHW division.

I would not argue your bottom line.

As to Vera not losing on his feet to someone, what about the Jardine fight? I was severely disappointed in his performance in that outing. I picked him to own Keith and he didn't.

I just don't think Brandon has shown me what Pat has. And might he shoot for the double-leg? Well, he's been training in the right camp for that; Team Lesnar.

The only way this fight happens is if Barry moves down to 205. A move which I'd be in favor of.

    Cheers,

Vera's Striking impressed me in his last fight before he got overpowered and i think he won the Couture fight but he needs to work on that TDD if he plans on staying in the UFC because LW is stacked with great wrestlers and BIG guys who have huge strength advantages over him
