Bas Rutten Says BJ Is The Best Fighter In The World.
Posted on July 16, 2010, 07:33 PM by David SaucierBas “El Guapo” Rutten recently did an interview on Tapout Radio.
The Tapout crew asked Bas who he though the best fighter in the world is? According to Tapout Radio a lot of mma insiders share the same opinion as Bas on who they believe the best fighter is.
Here is what Bas had to say:
"Technically wise I think if they put everything together I think BJ [is the best fighter in the world]. I would love to have my hands on a guy like BJ. As far as the stuff that he can do and pull off. That’s a guy that can knock you out or submit you whatever he wants to do. If you make a mistake he’ll drop you and if you make a mistake on the ground and leave an arm he will pull an arm bar."
BJ "The prodigy” Penn is getting ready for his rematch from UFC 112, where Frankie “The Answer” Edgar out pointed Penn in what some may consider a controversial decision to win the UFC lightweight title. The two are set to square off at UFC 118 on August 28.Also on the card will be the “boxing vs.mma” match Randy “The Natural” Couture vs. James “Lights Out” Toney.

Bas is THE man!!!
i disagree gsp rocked his world twice!! if anything is gsp but i think the greatest fighter in the world is anderson silva
He only rocked his world once. The first fight was very closely contested.
I think the arguement for BJ stands in his always being such a small fighter. The second time he fought GSP he weighed in at 168. He didn't cut a pound, didn't even make the upper limit of WW and GSP was cutting 20lbs. He took Lyoto Machida to a decision when Machida outweighed him by about 45lbs. He's only lost one time fighting guys his own size in over eight years, and even that one loss is very debatable.
I think that technically BJ is better than GSP, he has finer more natural talents than St. Pierre. However GSP is a far better athlete, works a lot harder at improving and getting and staying in shape and has the best takedowns in the game. His singles look like slamming doubles. No one can beat him unless GSP really ****s up. That's why BJ will never beat GSP.
Just because BJ lost to GSP dosnt' mean that GSP is better, When you move up a weight class and fight the top dog, It shouldnt tarnish that fighters legacy. It would be like GSP moving up to fight A.Silva and lossing no one would think less of him since he is fighting a bigger opponent that is at the top of their weight class. Personally I think Penn is more talented than GSP, and wins the fight where ever it goes, he can beat anyone with their own strenghts, and outclassing them or turnig the tables on them. Just to challenge himself, I dont see GSP moving up weight classes or fighting his oppenents at their strengths.
Lets see gsp cut to lightweight and see how well he fairs in a weight class he isn't suppose to be in.
I agree with the above^^
I disagree about Penn being better than GSP. GSP dominates easily and consistently against world class fighters.
He also executes a gameplan better than anyone.
He can dictate where he wants a fight and what pace he wants a fight.
Penn is world class no doubt, but he lacks several qualities that GSP possesses.
PS: Remember how much GSP outclassed him in their second fight also. If he is best in world he would not have been totally dominated like he was. He makes top 5 IMO but defo not #1.
I actually think that BJ losing to GSP the second time does make GSP better. BJ was small but if he was the best in the world as Bas said, that wouldn't have been such a problem. GSP dominated Alves who out weighed him by at least 20 lbs. Anderson stepped up to LHW twice and dominated (he is no where near as big as some of you think, look at him next to Machida). Fedor consistently beat guys who out weighed him by 30+ lbs. Being the best means that size is not as big of an issue for you as it is for a normal fighter. I give him credit for taking Machida to a decision but BJ is not the best. He's damn near but not it. Bas is the man but everyone is wrong sometimes.
Nu uhh...fo real? cool
You've got some good points, but you can't judge a fighter from a single matchup. Serra is currently 1-1 vs gsp, does that make them equal in your eyes? Penn has beaten serra as well. BJ has fought and won fights up to heavyweight, all of them very competitive even his losses were only decisions.
Just throwin it out there some of your points are a lil bit correct but Fedor also faught alot of people under his weight class down to middleweight, and If your sayin that Alves out weighed GSP by 20 lbs, i highly doubt it because most of the time they weigh in at 170 but then they gain the weight and can only usually put on about another 10 or 20 pounds, so if im right by your perspective your saying that Alves put on 30 or 40 pounds in a day?? thats to insane even for the most athletic person in the world so i have to disagree and say BJ is the best, imo he didnt even lose to Edgar, i mean when does getting tagged after every exchange and 2 take downs win you a fight, all 5 rounds at that?
I am not looking at just one fight it is just impossible to go into full detail without writing one of those really annoying, EPIC posts. BJ never fought at HW. His only fight above middle weight was his loss to Machida at LHW (he only weighed in at 191 lbs). He has successfully fought up to MW against Renzo and Rodrigo Gracie. As for Alves, he cuts down from around 210 to 170 and most of that is water weight. He can get most of that back through an IV. It isn't healthy but fighters do it. That would be thirty lbs. Maybe on fight night he only actually out weight GSP (who was only cutting 10-15 lbs at the time) by 15 lbs but all of that muscle is still there. As for Fedor fighting smaller guys, I don't see how that detracts from him beating all of those bigger guys. I can see an argument for BJ being A#1Tops , I just don't agree.
If he was as good as you say, he would not have allowed it to be such a close decision. Fact was he couldn't maintain Edgars pace or mix it up enough to disrupt Edgars gameplan.
You can make the argument for BJ or Georges or Anderson or Aldo.
I know a certain HW who is well rounded and can do a lot of things ston3pony..... actually 2 that you hate.... wait for it.... that's right..... Big Ben Rothwell. Nah seriously you are right but I agree with Bas. Bj is probably the most well rounded. He is dangerous everywhere! I heard Stitch is scared to put Vaseline on Bj's face because one time Stitch started before Bj was ready and 3 seconds later Stitch was in a kimura. The guy is amazing. Oh and btw Stitch has a Gracie/Nog triple black belt.
I would rather watch a BJ Penn Fight than GSP. GSP bores me to death. 25mins. of the same crap. No Submission, No KO, Nothing exciting besides the crap his and his gang always pull: Top Dominance and Ground and Pound.
Good way of winning fights, boring for people outside of the sport to watch. When you don't know anything about ground fighting, it looks less like fighting and more like mud wrestling. No disrespect, because in the real world GSP can scrap. It's just bad for the sport because of lack of excitement.
With the exceptions of GSP vs Matt Hughes, Serra; GSP has yet to have the wars, rivalries and drama that makes sports entertaining.
Sounds like you only watched about 3 or 4 GSP fights. I suggest you watch some more and stop trashing the guy. He is currently p4p #1. If watching one of the best mma fighters bores you go back to wwe.
