he should just retire before he ruins his record more ,

and just become a trainer , he could really help out the young new talent like Joe Lauzon

am going to admit that i was one of those that didnt credit edgar for the 1st win, and i honestly thoght that bj was just not 100% that night in abu dabi. but after seeing edgars peformance that nifght i think that he deserves to be the champion bar none the guy went in there and just showed what he had so kudos to edgar and bj is still one of the best.

Who cares about the record..he is doing what he loves. Isn't that more important? Do we look at how great Randy is because of his record? No, we realize things are more important than that.

yea idk what rigo is talking about record. randy is 19-10.. bj 15-7. everyone they fought is tough. bj will only have quality fights... and when he knows he cant compete with the opposition anymore, he'll leave. he wont stick around like chuck :/

For some reason, I always want BJ to win. But I'm left with questions.

-No gameplan change from last fight? Barely more than zero leg kicks and takedowns?

-How can BJ be this experienced and accomplished and show up with that corner? I'm a couch fighter and even I had better advice for BJ than his stupid corner.

-Before all other fights, slaps himself in the face to get warmed up, once in the ring. He just stood there in a weird, still kinda way and almost a little bit gay. Why so different this time?

-Post fight interview BJ says something like, "Frankie fought the same old boring fight as last time and he still sucks with his little fancy dancy jab and maybe he outpointed me but I don't accept it, but also much respect and no excuses. WTF?

-Puts out a bjpenn.com post where he says he wants to fight as often as possible but he's going home to relax and be with his family and take it slow. What?

-someone put out a video suggesting he had some kind of infection for the first fight. second fight he shows up sleepier than the first. What infection?

Is my favorite fighter a fraud?

I noticed him standing in the ring strangely and had a bad feeling about it.

My conclusion - His mind wasnt in it. Happens to everyone sometimes. If your mind is not in the fight bad things happen.

I'm not sure if he had anything else going on, if nerves got to him, if he just didnt have the confidence, or if he just choked or what. But it's obvious what his problem was.

Hell he was more amped at the weigh in than at the actual fight.

I agree his corner gave bad advice, but I was thinking earlier - maybe there is more to the story that we do not know. Maybe they were giving that advice because they knew something we dont. Maybe he was second guessing himself vs Edgar and that's why his corner was trying to restore his confidence?

I duno for sure but that makes sense to me. I've had to help my friends in similar ways in serious competition. I've seen friends "beat themselves" when they did not have their confidence, and no matter what you tell them, they just cant get back in to it until they have some success and restore their confidence. Only prob with that is the performance is worse until the confidence is restored - it's a snowballing effect.

    @ Fluffy

Wow - great question. He certainly sends mixed signals, all the time. One poster on this thread mad a very bright observation, that Penn spends more time fighting the fans and public opinion, then he does his opponents.

If I had to sum him up, I'd probably use his own words..."he's a front-runner and a quitter." At least that's what he said of GSP prior to the beating he took; at which point he quit.

I still say - The Penn that fought Diego Sanchez was unstoppable. And I believe would beat any fighter @ 155; including Edgar. However, Penn doesn't seem to have the resolve to maintain that condition; he just assumes he can skate by on his talent. Unfortunately, he no longer can.

Looking back on it - I feel sorry for Diego that he had to be the guy in the highlight reel, that proved just how great Penn could / can be...if he wants to be. He just want to, anymore. He doesn't want to relax...He wants to "continue", to relax.

    IMO - as always.

Beating Sanchez seems alot easier than beating Edgar.

BJ is a legend and a great fighter, dont get me wrong, but you look better against someone you are better than, and I think overall BJ is better than Edgar against the other LW's but not against Edgar, he is too fast for BJ. Watch the fight back and watch it again and again, you will realise what you are witnessing is MMA at it's absolute finest.

Nothing personal to Sanchez, but he has never delivered that level, so to say the BJ against Sanchez would beat anyone including Edgar is wrong.

I don't think it was his corners fault. Yea they sounded horrible but BJ didn't go out and do his job. He has enough experience. He knows what to do in the cage. I think Spyridon is right about his confidence.

tut tut tut. that's the same attitude BJ corner had and that's why he lost the fight. It doesn't matter how great you are you need direction and advice, not to mention a gameplan Joe Rogan got it spot on with his views on BJ corner compared to Edgars. He said during the fight Edgar's corner was giving him technical instructions but BJ corner was saying your better than this guy go beat him BJ get him out of there. thats it nothing else ? WTF And people are saying that Edgar isn't getting enough credit but just watch Maynard beat him again. I don't care what anyone says the fact that BJ did nothing different in the second fight other than go for takedowns late on should tell you all about his attitude and his camps attitude and that's why he lost imo not beacuse Edgar is P4P the best LW and Maynard will prove me right

The problem BJ had was 2fold.

1st, as mentioned already, his corner didn't give him useful information with regards to Edgar, 2nd, BJ for the 1st time ever was completely outclassed by another LW.

BJ was wired for this one, you only have to watch prefight interviews, so I dont buy the excuse he wasnt prepared or motivated - pure BS.

Credit where it's due and that's at Edgar's door. He gave one of the best performances in MMA ever against a top 10 p4p fighter in BJ and was simply too good for him.

If BJ says Edgar sucks, then what does it say about BJ?

Apart from GSP and Aldo, I cannot think of another fighter who has footwork and movement on that level.

Can't wait for the Maynard fight as Maynards style is the toughest for Edgar to deal with and will be a true test of how much he has improved, but FFS stop looking for excuses as to why BJ lost, because the truth is he was beat by a fighter with a complete tool box with excellent cardio to go with it.

He said "wanted". Past tense. The title of this thread is wrong. He said he "wanted" to fight as much as possible but that now he wants to take some time off. Sounds to me like he is considering leaving the sport for awhile.

That's the problem. He makes no sense. Last time he initially praised Frankie and made no excuses then started trashing Frankie and his corner and said he was sick. He's a baby- I always initially want to like him and end up seeing him as a spoiled little brat. He's not going to do anything "different", he's just gonna go home and stick his silver spoon back in his mouth.

"I'm motivated" "I'm in the best shape ever" "I had a great camp". Until he goes to a real camp to train I'm not believing any of it. BJ's got so much talent but he pisses it away training with his brothers in Haiwaii. If he wants to really take this serious, leave your family, leave your island and spend 6 weeks at ATT, Jackson's, with Caesar Gracie in NY. He's got to change because currently what he is doing isn't working.

Totally agree. He has all the talent in the world and most likely the worst training camp there is. But I don't think leaving his home and family is an option, so we may never see his continued potential realized. Unless he changes things drastically, we have seen his best and he has past his prime.

As long as Penn is fighting, I'll always root for em. It always sucks seeing your favorite fighter lose, but after that performance I feel more like wtf? Maybe his heart just isn't in it anymore, or maybe its just Edgars style. Forget a gameplan, or good coaching, taking Edgar down should be common sense He was 2/2 for takedowns, and almost took Edgars back in the fifth. Why only two attempts ? why wait untill the fifth to do it?

agreeed, i really hate casual fans who write bj off. him and randy have the greatest legacy in the sport because they won 2 diffrent belts in two diffrent weight classes. thats nearly impossible to do, it really is.

same with dan henderson, championships speak of greatness and these three guys have showed how goodthey are when they are at their best. peole need to show some damn respect, us bj fans have admitted edgars an excelllent fighter, i get so mad at the little punks who know 0 about mma who talk BJ down like he isnt one of the most exciting/talented fighters in the sport. its disrespectfult to MMA

bj's biggest enemy has always been himself i really think it is a mental problem i may be wrong but it seems anytime bj isnt dominating a fight he is losing a fight. if he is in control he is amazing but when the fight starts to get away from him he folds. bj might be the most talented fighter to ever set foot in the octagon. but i belive that because of his great talent he never had to learm mental toughness and the heart to win no matter what

"I'm going to take some time off and relax with my family". Interesting, because from what I heard, that's what he did before the fight too.

I used to be a big fan of BJ, but the excuse making and disrespect for other fighters have completely eroded my opinion of him.

The only way BJ will be able to maintain the delusions he and his entourage have been living under lately, is for him to retire.

Go back to Hawaii rich boy! Let some else take a crack at being the best p4p excuse maker in the business.
