BJ Penn knocks out Matt Hughes in 21 seconds

Former UFC Welterweight and Lightweight Champion BJ "The Prodigy" Penn bounced back from defeats against Frankie Edgar, with a flash KO victory over the Hall of Famer Matt Hughes.

Right off the start, Penn managed to connect with good jabs, before connecting with a powerful right hook, that knocked Matt Hughes down to the canvas. Penn delivered a finishing ground and pound, forcing the referee Dan Miragliotta to step in and stop the action at just 21 seconds in Round 1.

BJ Penn was very emotional (to say the least) in his post-fight interview, promising his fans more of "The Prodigy" in the UFC. It will be interesting to see if Penn decides to stay in Welterweight division, after getting a victory over someone, who was once considered as its undisputed King.

I was so pumped for BJ until they panned over to Matt - he looked heartbroken.

BJ was awesome calling Hughes his idol.

I've got a great fight for Matt - Dennis Hallman!!! Hallman's coming off a win and he's beat Matt twice!!!

BJ looked great last night but the fight was only 21 seconds. Bj has never really struggled in the first minute of any fight. I wouldn't jump to conclusions until BJ dominating a fight in the 3rd round.

Hughes sure talked alot about how hard that hit was, maybe it was an easy retirement bonus. He takes a quick fall knowing this is prolly his final fight anyway, makes bj look even better. Both get out good

just because BJ Penn beat an old Matt Hughes it does make him a contender in the welterweight division. He should stay in lightweight and fight some WEC fights. Imagine Aldo Vs. Penn

I think Aldo would murder BJ. He's too fast, powerful, and ridiculously skilled for BJ to contend with.

yea your right. in comparison bj has beaten much less game opponents than aldo and possesses little skills to overpower him in comparison. (sarcasm)

well bj certainly proved me wrong. i feel bad for hughes, he was close to getting another title shot but i guess everyone has to meet their match and bj's proven he's the better fighter now.

but i don't think he should get a title shot that quick, he's only coming off 1 win. and besides, fitch has been deserving of a shot for ages now. how about bj vs condit?

I highly doubt that BJ will beat Fitch but if he does he just might get the belt. He probably thought the first Edgar fight was a fluke. After the second maybe he had one of those epiphanies that make a fighter better. The big question is, how would GSP respond to that opening salvo?

BTW. My answer to that question is; by taking BJ down and beating him into submission. I don't see BJ beating the top guys at 170. He could probably beat Kos and Alves and a couple other top ten but I don't see him beating GSP, Shields and Fitch. It would be interesting to see if Penn V Sanchez looks the same at 170 as it did at 155.

I like BJ not having a belt. makes for so many more possible matches. Sanchez vs Penn would be good, but I would like to see him eat up a few more wrestlers before going back down. I wanna see him fight Ben Henderson a this point, I think thatll be a really fun one to watch. Well see if its for the title or not though

Its a good win for bj but im not sold on him. Not that he doesnt have the talent but he isnt consistant. Fitch will eat him.

Good win for BJ and I hope it leads somewhere, but I find it a little amusing how quickly he is "back" and then someone was saying p4p again etc etc... Flash knockouts happen, I wanted to see how he performed all around and I thought Hughes was the perfect guy for him to showcase his all around game. Obviously his next opponent, more than likely, will not fall in less than half a minute.

Bottom line is that styles make fights. BJ Penn is arguably the best striker in the sport of MMA. Penn also arguably possesses the greatest takedown defense in the sport of MMA. This is a very problematic skill set for Matt Hughes. Hughes a subpar striker at best who anchors his attack with takedowns isn't left with a lot of options to survive this matchup. HIs best chance for victory has always been to let BJ Penn beat himself before the fight ever starts by not achieving the level of conditioning it takes to battle for more than one round. IF Hughes had the speed of a human bumble bee ala Frankie Edgar he may have been able to move in and out of range safely while BJ punched himself out of gas and later moved in for the takedown on an exhausted and frustrated Penn. Being pinned on your feet with a vastly superior striker is a good way to get knocked out in 21 seconds..
