BJ Penn and Jake Shields want to fight each other
Posted on May 17, 2011, 09:45 AM by Anton Gurevich
Speaking via Twitter, BJ "The Prodigy" Penn expressed his desire to fight the recent UFC Welterweight title challenger Jake Shields. Penn stated that he would never fight a Cesar Gracie fighter, but Jake Shields has been calling him out "for years".
In his response to BJ Penn (also via Twitter), Shields accepted the challenge, but also added that he would like the fight to be the first 5 Round Non-Title Fight.
BJ Penn was originally scheduled to face Jon Fitch at UFC 132, but now finds himself without an opponent after Fitch had to pull out of the fight due to a shoulder injury. Despite losing against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129, Jake Shields is still one of the top ranked fighters in the UFC Welterweight division, and could easily serve as a #1 contender fight for BJ Penn.

Bj penn for the win!
Ya hopefully Penn takes this one....one of the best match ups in any division rite now imo and this is the kind of fight which will motivate Penn to get into good shape so I hope UFC makes this happen
BJ by KO!!! hes got better BJJ, better stand up and is just overral better. I cant see Penn lossing this one
i cant see shields making this a standup war cause bj is a good counterpuncher with power, probably take him down or grind him untill bj is worn out also shields wants a 5 round match which bj is having a hard time especially his cardio gets easily depleted. but if penn is very motivated hooe wil have a legendary fight to remember
I can. The same way he lost to Hughes. He's up against a bigger, stronger wrestler. Of course his standup is better, but his BJJ is not. That's one of the more ridiculous statements I've read on here in a while. The majority of MMA fighters will tell you that Jake Shields has the best BJJ in MMA. Penn has great BJJ and incredible flexibility, but he's not on Jake's level on the ground. Also, did I mention Shields will have at least 20 pounds on him come fight time.
im going to pray to king Kamehameha for Penn to knock this fool out ;)
ok so maybe theyre equally skilled but to say BJ isnt even on shields level is ****ing retarded. BJ earned his black belt in no time and won many prestigious competitions including the world JJ championship.
Matt hughes and fitch both had 20 lbs on him too and he did pretty dam well against them
Honestly it depends on which BJ shows up once again.... are we gonna see the BJ that ran out there KOd Hughes, the BJ that ran out there and took Fitch down, or are we gonna see the out of shape BJ that got dominated by the much smaller Edgar (second fight). I hope he wins for damn sure im not a Team Cesar Gracie fan at all so i hope he beats the piss out of Shields... KO or TKO preferred but a sub or Dec. would be fine by me as long as he wins.
Bj gets the credit for winning and losing!! Amazing. Why is it so hard to accept that Edgar was simply better. BJ was not out of shape or unmotivated. Watch some pre fight interviews of him before the edgar fight. These apologist mtyhs are getting annoying.
Another thing that people aren't mentioning....
On paper, guys like Josh Koscheck, BJ Penn and Thiago Alves have much better standup than Shields. Shields looks stiff, slow and doesn't move well standing up.
But... he hit GSP. He hit him repeatedly. He messed up his face. Alves, Koscheck, and Penn couldn't touch GSP. Yes GSP had only one eye, but he had one eye because Shields hit him.
you my friend are ignorant and know nothing of BJJ. BJ got his blackbelt in 3 and a half years. when it comes to pure BJJ there isnt anybody as naturally talanted as BJ penn. getting your BJJ blackbelt and winning hte mundalis that fast is the equivalent to getting to the NBA after 3 years of playing basketball and winning the NBA finals.
I said, and I quote "BJ Penn has great BJJ and incredible flexibility." I'm not sure in what way you interpret that as denying his natural talent. However, just because he is a blackbelt and an incredible talent does not put him on Shields level. He does not have the same achievements and accolades as Shields in international BJJ competitions. BJ has one BJJ championship, Shields has several.
@mousasi
Bj was subing vets well b4 he got his black belt.you just made one of the dunbest commments I seen by using the term on another level.however Sheilds advantage on the ground is in the wrestling department. If they did fight BJ would win the first 2 rounds and possibly finish thr fight round 3 onwards if it was for 5 rounds would go to Sheilds if he can get BJ down.as much as I would to see this fight its not hard to predict the ''theme'' or patterns we would see
Sheilds has good bjj, but he is not even close to the best in mma. Roger Gracie is the king, Maia is great, Jacre, Werdum are also amazing. Just off the top of my head i can list 4 guys that even Sheilds would admit are way better. As for BJ vs Sheilds the difference is the wrestling and strength/stamina not bjj. just my 2 cents but what do i know.
not only did BJ "touch" Gsp but he ****ed up his whole face in the first fight. The alves fight all he did was take him down GSP didnt wanna take shields down and Koschecks stand up is made up of his overhand right
Yes he did... in their first fight. That was 5 years ago. In their second fight which was recent enough to actually be relevant, Penn was unable to land any significant shots on GSP.
I dont think you mentioned the kick that dropped Shields, the punch that dropped him, the other punch that dropped him, the punches that rocked him ALOT, or are you just worried about how bad GSP's face was after Shields through that "open hand punch" that scraped GSP's eye, did i mention its kinda hard to fight with out an eye?
This will be the 2 best Jits guys to get in the cage since Mir and Nog!
lol noone wants to see Penn-Fitch II now.
I never wanted to see Penn Fitch 1
noone wants to see fitch vs anyone
If Penn shows up in shape it's a bad fight for Shields - BJ should be able to stuff take downs long enough to do some serious damage on the feet.
If BJ shows up in shape he can beat anybody in the world, weight pending of coarse.
GSP didn't KO Shields. Dan Henderson didn't KO Shields. Paul Daley didn't KO Shields. Martin Kampmann didn't KO Shields. The guy has 1 loss since 2004, and has only been KO'd once in his entire MMA career... and that was more than 11 years ago. BJ Penn is not going to KO Jake Shields.
If BJ Penn can defend the takedown for three rounds (which has proven impossible against Shields for anyone not named GSP over the last 7 years) then maybe he can "work him over" and win a decision.
In all likelihood, Shields will take Penn down, keep him down, and win a decision. Penn has never been submitted, and I don't see Shields pounding him out.
Have you ever watched any of Shields fights, outside SF or the UFC???
@ mousassi
You really fancy sheilds don't you. Bj is a better striker than all the guys you mentioned,he sets up his shot with more intelgence and technique than Daley n Hendo. Hendo really must look back and think how da **** did I not finish that guy.Gsp at his best has shown in his last 30 + rounds he's won he's not a finisher BJ is. BJ is may favourite fighter so expect a reply every time you suggest sheilds will win
I do not deny that Penn has great boxing. However, GSP has more KO/TKO's than Penn, as do Hendo and Daley.
It's a little ridiculous to day that BJ has better standup than GSP... go back and watch their last fight.
I'm not a Shields fan at all. You just said BJ is your favorite fighter. I am here to tell you that the most likely outcome is Shields by decision. A KO by Penn is a long shot at best.
On the feet Penn kills it. On the ground it's a tough call, maybe Shields because he has the strength advantage?
Would be a great fight.
history lesson please.
i know BJ worked with one of the Gracie's way back and then some other Gracies got mad when BJ challenged a Gracie (maybe his own instructor?). i know BJ worked with Mendez who is in norcal, like Cesar Gracie.
i've always been intrigued by a Diaz/BJ fight. BJ says he would never challenge a Cesar Gracie fighter. so what's BJ's connection to Cesar Gracie's camp?
I would like to know what's up with that too.
Pulling for Penn but Shields is pretty big at WW. The guy was recently a MW.
And lol at Jake thinking it'll be a 5 rounder just cause he says it on twitter. He got that kind of pull?
you saw what he did to hughes who in my opinion is a better albeit older version of sheilds
Who has better balance? Penn or Kampman. Also Shields is bigger than GSP. At least BJ hits harder than St Pierre tho. i wanna see penn finish
I would hope for BJ to finish Shields but I doubt it. After the loss I think Shields will play it safe and drag the next person he fights to the ground where he will do absolutely nothing but lay on him. I would predict Shields by decision.
clearly wasn't as serious as fitch's problems :)
Shields is one smart guy to ask for 5 rounds.
Bj will gas by round 3 then Shields will go in for the kill.
BJ penn was a BJJ World Champion. He's definatly got that over shields but shields isnt a slouch either.. and the gracies hate bj because they trained him to win it and he blew them off basically.. But bj also has one of the best hands in mma so I see a huge win for bj in this one..
BJ was a BJJ world champion... 1 time.
Shields was a BJJ world champion... 3 times.
BJ doesn't have jack over Shields in that area.
very interesting fight! i think is better than Bj vs Fitch II
im kinda sick of instant rematches!
in my opnion bj pen in shape is the top 5 pound for pound. this is going to be shields vs man bear pig
in my opnion bj pen in shape is the top 5 pound for pound. this is going to be shields vs man bear pig
BJ better show up the way he did in the 3rd fight with hughes and the fight with Diego Sanchez.
And he needs to work on his cardio
Although BJ will be giving up quite a bit of weight against Shields, he has fought bigger guys before and only ever came unstuck against GSP. he was good enough to compete with Machida and Fitch and has wins over Hughes, because he is simply brilliant. Not fast enough to cope with Edgar but brilliant none the less.
That said I have no idea how this fight might go down, but i do not expect the size difference to be much of a disadvantage to BJ as his all round skill set is better than Shields IMO.
I wish that this fight would happen I mean Fitch is out and Shields should be ready.
BJ will make Shields look stupid he wont just go for overhand rights and jabs
Dear Jon Jones and Rashad
This is how to do twitter without looking retarded
