Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: Submission attempt on Frank Mir was "stupid"

On Saturday, December 10, it appeared that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was on his way to defeating Frank Mir. With 2:20 remaining in the first round Nogueira  dropped Mir to the mat with punches, following him down where he continued to tee off Mir. Mir appeared to be in trouble, with UFC commentator Joe Rogan exclaiming, “Frank is out.”

Just seconds after Rogan’s comment Nogueira switched tactics, moving from strikes to a submission attempt. Nogueira slapped on a guillotine choke, which Mir was able to roll through and secure a kimura. Mir’s kimura eventually snapped the arm of Nogueira and earned him the submission victory.

After the fight Nogueira had the following to say about how the fight concluded, “It was stupid. The fight was won, but I made up my mind to go for a submission. Two more shots and I knocked out Mir for sure. But I wanted to finish the fight beautifully. I wanted to finish with a submission. For a long time I had not finished a fight with a submission, so for a moment I wanted to submit him (laughs). But it was stupid, I was should have gotten the knock out. The fight was mine and I missed the opportunity. I felt very well. I was fast with good movement and very confident. I tried to submit when I was in a position where he could counter attack and he ended up taking my arm. I made a mistake, it was stupid …” – for more see BJPenn.com

I know that with Shoulder dislocations its usually immobilized for upto 9 weeks and then upto another 9 weeks of rehab...but then Nog also fractured his humerus so i assume he'd be out for atleast 4-6 months before he can start training again.

The doctor said he won't need surgery for his broken arm at least.

This is good news that he wont require surgery. Im a fan of his and wanted him to win. We all know how tough he is, but in the future i hope he can swallow his pride to avoid potential career ending injuries.

    Yes nog, that was stupid...

But on the bright side, it's better than getting KO'd because that'll stick with you alot longer than a broken arm.

Some of franks victories are pretty damn flukey, btu he'll be brought back to reality soon enough.

If his arm has to be surgically fixtured I would be surprised if he ever fights again.

Just speaking from personal experience, since I had this exact same injury and 2 years latter Im not 100%. In order to fix a radial fractured humerus they have make a rather large cut down the middle of the triceps. Unfortunately the radial nerve wraps around this area and severing it is a common complication associated with the surgery. Mine was done by an ortho from Duke witch happens to be ranked 6th best hospital in the country for orthopedics. Trust me if they cant set and cast it externally it is a Very big deal.

@KiLL-DoZeR The biggest difference is Mir was 25 at the time of his injury and Big Nog is 35...recovery times are not the same.

Have to back up Mousasi on this one. Also, the shoulder is a joint that does very poorly with immobilization. Often the arm is not casted but just in a sling with mobility restrictions. Even with physiotherapy adhesive capsulitis (Frozen shoulder) will frequently set in. The hip and knee are not prone to this but the shoulder capsule is because of fusing of the invaginations required for reaching overhead. It's a complicated joint.

Given a choice I'd take a leg fracture over humerus fracture.

Fusing of the invagination sounds just terrible.

Definitely the shoulder is a bad dislocation due to its poor strength. As you probably know, high mobility means poor strength. Unlike the hip which is a lower mobility and higher strength join. I have seen some of the shoulder dislocations and the people are in major pain. I have only seen hip dislocations in older folks with degenerative issues. In my experience though, the femur fractures are far far more painful and debilitating than a humerus fracture. Morphine and Versed please!

    @Kill-Dozer,

I once had a hamster which had a fight with a gerbil in my garden. It was hard to see how the hamster was going to win, but little did I know that a local blackbird called Snowy, (he is a tame blackbird and generally friendly) was friends with my hamster (who is called Mr Nibbles), anyhow, the gerbil was in full mount and there seemed to be little chance for Mr Nibbles, when Snowy (the blackbird) swooped down and managed to do a mid air crane kick (taught by Mr Seagull), well you have never seen a gerbil take a shot like that before.

That gerbil was knocked out faster than even a Dan Henderson overhand right...

Anyway, did I tell you all about my uncle Bill who hurt his toe whilst riding his bike....

Thanks for sharing, however I suggest you go to Oprah Winfreys website or perhaps Dr Phil... its probably more appropriate.

seemed like after the hip surgeries, Nogueira's striking is much stronger, also using good headmovement. Been knocking dudes silly and putting them on queer street.. I think Nogueira is still a force in the division, it all depends how it goes with his recovery from this injury.

His x-rays looked like a clean break, hopefully he'll be back soon.

Have to respect Nog's mindset, he is a warrior.

Big Nog may not be willing to say that Frank is a better fighter than he is even after being beat twice but he cant get away from the fact that Frank is a smarter fighter......with your experience there is no excuse for stupidity.

Maybe in that particular fight. Ive seen Mir do some stupid things, like throw a knee when you just managed to get off your back taking heavy shots only to be taken down and finished.

In other words, Nog wanted there to be no doubt who the #1 submission artist at HW is.

Big Nog was certain that a couple of more shots and Mir would be finished.

I am not so sure that is true, especially in hindsight. Mir obviously had enough wits about him to reverse Nog, and grab and hold on to the Kimura and Big Nog was tiring fast after his flurry.

What was stupid was Big Nog tapping after his arm snapped.

Pride made him try for the submission, and pride made him refuse to tap.

    Pride is almost always stupid.
