Anderson Silva wants to fight Georges St. Pierre, says "Rush" is "the best in the World"
Posted on April 12, 2011, 03:55 PM by Joey SantosusRon Kruck of HDNet catches up with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva during the grand opening of the Black House gym in San Diego, California. Silva discusses the facility, as well as the various teams who come together as one big "family." Silva says he is happy with his win over Vitor Belfort, but says he is focused only on preparing for the future. He also talks about the potential "superfight" with Georges St. Pierre, who he considers one of the best fighters in the world.
This past February Silva extended his UFC record for most consecutive title defenses to eight by knocking out Belfort in the opening round of their UFC 126 match-up. Who the consensus pound for pound king will face next is unclear, however should St. Pierre emerge victorious from his April 30th bout with Jake Shields, UFC President Dana White has stated that a "superfight" between the champs would be the likely scenario.

I've talked about the AS vs GSP superfight many times on this site - most people agree it needs to happen. I think the resistance is coming from Dana and GSP.
If you don't think that was humility, then I don't know what is. The Silva haters are still going to find ways to put a negative spin on this interview.
GSP has no intention on fighting A Silva cuz its a hard work 4 him, in the he will have 2 move up and he doesnt look interested in it.. like when Teofilo Stevenson refused 2 fight Muhammed Ali.....BTW: did you guys notice dat he now only speaks in english?? LOL
Silva needs to move down in weight. It would be difficult, but he has fought at 170 before I believe.
Funny because i remember Silva saying Bj was the best in the world not to long ago. Now St Pierre is the best? seems like he wants people to focus on him vs St Pierre, so he won't have to move up and fight guys his own size.
Didn't he said he wanted to fight at 205? didn't he said he wanted to fight Roy Jones Jr, Didn't he said he would fight Frank Mir?
Silva change his statements to much.
Sadly, St Pierre and Silva will probably not happen. And if it does it won't be until at least mid 2012. Silva is already rumored to be fighting Okami in August at UFC Rio. And St Pierre has already said that if he fights at 185 he wants to take time to adjust to the weight. It just doesn't seem like it will happen any time soon.
@moot
Don't know why you have been weaked your spot on. The UFC model is based around the title and champions, having champions fight each other hurts that model people forget it's not you or me that makes the difference for the UFC it's the casual fans that increase ppv buys. Really think about how many Champion v Champion match ups we would have seen if it were up to the fans. Dana is a fan but he HAS to protect the business model and having champions beat each other than trying to sell a ppv for the losers next title match is not a problem the UFC want to have. As far as GSP I was on to him a long time ago its amazing how people ignore the obvious when it comes to ''baby faces'' on a video posted on lowkick he clearly said he would only fight at MW towards the END of his career. He is cautious by nature and is scared of what moving up for 1 fight could do to his body and reflexes is the line he he is spinning now but still he makes a good point like i said though he a cautious person. GSP does not want to move up to MW right now PERIOD and ideas that he will are pure fantasy. Don't be surprised if the fight is a catch weight requiring A.Silva top drop to 180 but if Silva refuses it won't happen people should be prepared for this coz the signs and the info is out there you just have to choose to see it and pay attention,
see thats why gsp does not want too move too middle weight hang his welterweight title up ! oh and gsp is worried if he moves up in weight gsp thinks he can screw his self for coming back down too welterweight . gsp has all the tools too defeat silva . but i don't think gsp is ready for such a challenge . now if he
said he was ready i would believe in him . all so Silva's 2 favourite fighters gsp and penn . penn had the fastest hands in light weight i would even say welterweight as of now .
Helps keep people from knowing his true intentions and possibly getting a match he wants. He will do a catchweight and has ventured up and down before.
I think BJ has made it clear that he is not the best in the world.
Well, maybe you should watch the video before posting rubish... he said he considers the best fights in the world to be GSP and BJ Penn, he even said he doesnt consider himself the best in the world (which is the martial artist way, any practitioner will tell you that). Furthermore, he never wanted to go to 205, he always wanted to stay at 185, but his boss (DW - the UFC) kept pushing him in that direction and if you have worked in any industry before, the boss dictates the rules...
he said in his opinion bj penn and gsp are the best.
listin to the interview retard
He said GSP AND BJ are among the best.
I don't hate Silva, but I wonder if his sudden desire to fight GSP is actually a desire not to fight Jones.
no i dont have to spin anything, just **** him
Agreed. He praises every fighter but himself and thinks that Kruck said "do you like GSP?" rather than "would you like to fight GSP" because he answers by saying "Yes, I like GSP". He did not say he wants to fight GSP and he is the most humble and greatest warrior to ever enter the cage. Name one moreso?
Anderson understood the question...
The exact question and answer:
Kruck: Would you like to face GSP?
Silva: Yea, I like it... GSP is great.
Exact wording... I dont think he was referring to St. Pierre as "IT"
"sudden desire".....I'm sorry, last time I checked AS has been wanting to fight GSP for the last two years. GSP has been stalling because of his "need to gain right amount of muscle" issues. Besides Jones and GSP can wait, AS needs to deal with Sonnen first.
why does he need to deal with sonnen, he gave silva everything he had for 4 rounds and then got tapped out its not like it was a bs decision..brock lesnar got his ass kicked by shane carwin you didn't see him having to fight carwin again why should silva have to fight sonnen... sonnen lost he needs to work his way back up
Maybe you have access to Anderson Silva news that I don't, but I didn't hear anything concrete coming out of Silva or his camp about fighting GSP until quite recently.
But your right, Silva has Okami and probably Sonnen on his plate first, assuming Chael doesn't self-destruct again.
Also, don't forget Sonnen was on steroids during the fight. I think that takes away any respect he gained in that particular fight.
Sonnen will be on steroids next time too.
He is allowed to for his medical condition... which is kind of messed up as it's an unfair advantage... but what are you going to do?
I'm a big AS fan but all fanboy-ism aside, he was getting a major whooping. He got beat up standing, got beat up on the ground....I just want to know for sure that the rib injury and the steroids were the reason we didn't see the Silva we're all used to seeing. I want to hope that Silva is going to make a huge statement and make Sonnen look like a "car-accident" victim. (no disrespect to any real car-accident victims, only speaking metaphorically.)
Jones is a new kid on the block... Silva been tryin to fight GSP for way before Jones was really in the picture... Silva aint scared of Jones bro' believe that but Jones has a long road ahead of him before encountering Silva..... "Rashad, Rampage, Lyoto, Forrest" just to name a few... He's the champ... and now he needs to proof his worth and dominance by holding on to that belt !! Getting the belt is 1 thing.. but holding on to it is where shit hits the fan... but i'm confident he'll be reigning for a minute though... Jones is a ****ing problem !!!
same thing comes to mind , why does he wants to fight the smaller GSP
why not make a run for the title at 205? im not saying fight Jones right away , but it would be interesting watching him fight guys of similar height and reach.
Thiago Silva , Brandon Vera, Rashad , Shogun , so many good fights for him there.
Fighting GSP will prove nothing , we already know he can beat him as Jones probably would beat him as Cain would beat all of them.
Hey Moots you were right some asshole is saying his desire to fight to fight GSP is actually a desire not to fight Jones :P Shut the **** up cranestyle this fight has been looming in the air for years, and Silva has been wanting to fight GSP for years, and many fans have been wanting to see this fight for years(i'm personally not one of them, but if it happens what the hell i'm watching it)...Also stop with all the Jon Jones match ups,let him enjoy his reign as the LHW Champion for a while, and let's see how many times he can defend that tittle, cause damn tittle is cursed, ever since Liddell lost it there hasn't been anyone who defended the tittle convincingly.Once he does that then we can talk Jones vs Silva
I would rather see Anderson Silva vs Jon Jones and GSP vs Aldo... AS much as I dont like Silva I think is too much for GSP... Jones unorthodox fighting style would give Silva more of a problem than GSP's fighting skills...
no, not a typo, you can read again it, says GSP vs Aldo
I'm waiting for Faber vs Bigfoot
they are separated by two weight classes how would that happen?
how are you even going to put those two names together other then them being in top 3 p2p. holy sh*t, sometimes i regret reading comments bc i read dumb comments like you just typed. ANYONE WANT CRUZ VS MACHIDA!?!? YEAAAA I DO!!! hahahahahaha
lesnar vs velasques was a 20 lb difference fight and velasquez kicked his ass... its the same here they can still fight with 10 to 15 lb difference and i think Aldo could give enough trouble to GSP...
You can't compare that... in a higher weight class its easier to make a fight like that happen. Cause being bigger and heavier does not necessarily mean you'll pick up and toss around your opponent... Now with the lower weight classes its another story... GSP will pick aldo up and throw him across the f**king Octagon bro'... there is no way Aldo will survive that.. he'll be man handled unless he manages to stay on the outside and chop GSP's legs down.. but we both know that is NOT gonna happen!!
Yes exactly! Aldo is a ridiculous striker but,. Gsp is no slouch. Not only could he just take little Aldo down at will but I wouldn't doubt ground and pound him to a pulp too.
Interestingly enough I wouldnt be totally surprised if Aldo could pull off an upset. The dude is a machine. But come on it would be a miracle. He may be able to take out a no name welterweight but not GSP.
Yea dont know about GSP vs Aldo but Silva vs Jones would be EPIC!
I'm no longer interested in this so called super fight. As much as I respect GSP I don't believe this fight will be as good for Silva as the Jones fight.
Silvas striking would be the perfect matchup for Jones. He's fast enough to avoid Jones's strikes but can he stay away from the take downs? I doubt it. Can he handle Jones's power/strength on the ground when it goes there? Who knows? Can he weather the storm & pull off a sub or will he get messed up like everybody who's faced Jones lately!
Seriously though. I reckon it would be either one of the most amazing fights in UFC (Possibly all MMA) history.... or someone could go down like a sack of spuds with a front kick or spinning elbow.
I pray that Silva v Jones happens.
Silva agrees with me. GSP is the best in the world. He would control Andy for 5 rounds in the most boring "super fight" ever.... but he would win and that's all that matters. I guess...
GSP previously stated AS to be the best too. I think they are both trying to be modest. Makes them seem like they have more to attain.
Wow...His english may not be the greatest, but it was a very nice interview nevertheless. GSP, BJ, Jon Jones are great fighters, but, sir, you are the best in the world.
kudos toanderson for doing hs best to do interviews in english these days
Anderson Silva is ready to fight GSP, while GSP is reluctant to fight Anderson Silva. Need I say more?
Why wouldn't GSP be reluctant? He would be the one moving up in weight and potentially giving his belt. If the shoe was on the other foot things would be different.
If the shoe was on the other foot, all the GSP fans would be calling Anderson Silva a coward. Kinda like the same way the Silva haters call him cowardly because he won't go up to 205 and fight Jon Jones.
The difference is, Anderson Silva already moved up twice and won both fights by 1st rnd KO (one against a former champ), while GSP has yet to leave his comfort zone. As much as I like GSP, I'm about tired of seeing him fight rematches.
I'd love to see GSP move up and fight some MWs, such as Belfort, Sonnen, Marquardt, and for lulz Bisping. He doesn't necessarily need to fight Silva (though that would be AWESOME), but I at least wanna see if he can hang with some bigger guys.
I agree with you dude I'd love to see GSP move up and fight SIlva, I was simply pointing out his reluctancy.
Where did AS pick up the practical English, all of a sudden? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, but for years he's played this little dance about...I speak not English good....sort of thing and now he seems to be an ESL graduate.
And on that note - this is something that Anderson should do more of; speak English. It makes him seem more human or accessible. To me, Anderson has always seemed stand-offish, distant and even arrogant and most of that is probably as a result of the language barrier. In this interview, he actually seems like one of us; like some average Joe who just happens to fight for a living and happens to be (probably) the best P4P fighter in the world; he is certainly the most functional. I know of no other fighter that could successful span 3 weight divisions, the way AS has or could; for he would be either champ or (a) primary contender @ 185 / 205 / 225.
Anderson's Humility - I think he's humble in the sense that he doesn't go on about how great is and he certainly could, but I don't believe (for a second) that he doesn't consider himself to be the best in the world. I don't see how he couldn't and it wouldn't be ego. it would simply be an assessment based on fact(s).
Silva on GSP - Again, I don't think he really believes GSP to be the BIW. I think that's probably more to be nice / politically correct (he would never say himself and didn't) and also to maybe help GSP over the 185 fence and into a fight. Call it a tactic if you will. If you can't or it is not your nature to trash talk your way into a fight, then perhaps you can praise your opponent into taking a / the fight. It might be the smart approach and Anderson, if anything, is smart. However, so is GSP and he won't fall for it. If that fight happens it won't be for at least 2 more years - IMO.
...Great interview for The Champ.
Saw Phil Davis, Is this a old video ? or did he go back to train with little Nog after he won ?
I wanna c gsp vs silva bad way longer than Jones vs silva.. only people that don't wanna c it r the gsp nutthuggers..
GSP will murder AS
I think everyone would like to see A Silva vs GSP to find out who is better but i dont see how this fight settles any pound for pound questions... P4P suggests that if both fighters fought at the same natural weight then their fighting ability would decide the outcome of the fight... BJ Penn was at one time probably the best LW in the UFC but stepping up to WW he become top 10 maybe top 5... thats because of height, reach, weight and strength dissadvantage not skill set.
I'd love to see the fight but i'd prefer it at catchweight, if GSP moves up he will be testing out a new weight against the most successful MW in UFC and MMA history, his first few fights in a new weightclass should be to acclimatise and find the balance of new physique and conditioning...
Look at what happened to Diego Sanchez after he lost to BJ for the LW title he had looked formiddable at LW, he gained the wrong type of weight quickly and got picked apart by Hathaway who isnt in his league (pound for pound)...
Both GSP and Silva fight at their most effective weights so if we want to decide a pound for pound king in this bout and have a half legitimate answer the fighters should meet half way and so the odds are not stacked against either fighter.
I love both fighters but i'd hate to see a legacy unfairly tarnished!!
I would say a lot of penns problems were gas related too. AS p4p best fighter and GSP p4p best sport player.
Hopefully we get to see this fight BEFORE Dec 21, 2012 Ya DiGG?!?! lol
Anderson Silva - "All of de fighteers, Ima very happy, all ova d Academy, I no starta baka D training! wtf? lol Love it
its not easy to come out and speak a language you hardly know, you feel embarrass and shy, but once you get that feeling away and you feel better its easy, props to AS
Silva- fight Jon Jones so he can whoop your ass all the way back to Brazil.
this is his 2nd language lets see hoe quick you can learn portuguese!!
how quick sorry
gsp is afraid because anderson would literally make him look stupid...sonnen rematch would be a better fight.
also jon jones is the best fighter alive and would hurt anderson...i want sonnen to fight jon jones because he is better than anderson,,yes he lost to him by anderson getting lucky at best...a rematch with soonen would be clutch but trust anderson does not want to fight him again...
Gsp has far more too lose here than silva.
GSP would have to leave the welterweight division behind forever, and if he lost would always be seen as No.2, something i know he could never stomache.
GSP would have to put on all the weight. Whereas Silva would have to do nothing, but train for his natural weight.
So effectively my point is:
Silva has everything to gain on GSP moving up, and nothing really to lose greatly. He would have GSP scalp to put on his mantle at the end of the day, hence why he wants this.
HOWEVER;
If Silva was to lose though then it would be interesting, to see where he would go.
Light heavyweight?
Jon Jones?
Heavyweight?
Regardless of being a GSP fan boy, i don't think he matches up well with Silva at all. Silva needs to be pressured like Chael did, and thats not the sort of fighter GSP is.
I remember in a interview on I believe on Canada's 'MMA Connected' telling 'SHOW DOWN Joe there was nothing GSP does that really impresses him. Now Anderson is now saying GSP and BJ Penn are both the best in the world in his opinion. Maybe now that he may be facing George he finally giving respect where respect is due.
i don't think GSP wants any part of that.
While I think GSP is wary of moving up a weight class, anyone who thinks he's afraid of Silva and ducking him has no idea what they are talking about.
wudnt take him 2 srsly wasnt he calin bj the best a wile ago... then he say in this vid that gsp best bj best jones is the best. yea he sound like a 12y.o girl 2 lol
watch the video again, he says BJ Penn is the best in the world, then GSP.
