Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II possible for UFC's return to Brazil in January

GracieMag.com reports that the long-awaited rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen is close to happening at UFC's return to Brazil on January 14th.

According to the article, top Brazilian TV network Globo looking to max out its recently-established partnership with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, by pushing for "the biggest rematch in the UFC history" to happen in Brazil.

UFC President Dana White recently quoted Anderson Silva not being "entirely interested" in rematching the "disrespectful punk" Chae Sonnen, but now it looks like the opportunity to humiliate "The People's Champion" in Brazil may tempt the reigning UFC Middleweight Champion into the rematch:

"In a recent interview on Brazilian TV show anchored by journalist Marilia Gabriela, Silva said he has no reason to offer Chael a rematch. However, ever since Brazilian TV network Globo – the biggest in the country – won its bid to broadcast the UFC and another installment of the event was confirmed for January 14 in Rio, a lot has been going on behind the scenes and pressure for the rematch to take place has been great."

UFC: Rio 2 (or simply UFC 142) will take place at the same venue that hosted UFC 134, HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Speaking at Heavy.com's UFC 137 Fight Day, multi-time UFC Champion Vitor Belfort already confirmed he will be part of the UFC 142 fight card, as many other Brazilian fighters are expected to join the 37 year old "Phenom".

Chael keeps his face out of Anderson's crotch this time, dethrones the greatest champ in MMA history, and gets assassinated on his way back to the dressing room.

SERIOUSLY, if the rematch takes place in Brazil, the UFC should protect CHAEL from being lynched by the crowd...IF he comes out with the win, the task would be even more urgent and necessary...I can see however how a fight in BRAZIL is very likely to dissuade or even seduce a clearly reluctant champ who should have reacted immediately to Chael's tauntings just as GSP did with DIAZ..............

Go with your first instinct Dana, the rematch in brail would bring too many headaches. Brazilian animals (not fans) would be the one trying to get to Chael. Also, its not up to the fighter to pick who he defends his title to. The fighter has only one job,,,,Fight... what a JOKE when the fighter gets to pick. I would be hesitant too if the last time I fought this guy, he kicked me around like a redheaded step child.

I am all about this fight however if I was Chael there is no way I would fight in Brazil. He may not even make it to the ring. Past that, I have seen how Silva clowns on people he likes taunting them to fight. Chael will be a whole different story. There will be a lot of shit talk after this fight from the winner.

If you have ever watched documentaries on Brazil how police shoot dead anyone found with a firearm due to how bad gun crime is, or various celebs/sportsfolk who have been robbed at gunpoint whilst competing/attending events in Brazil it is apparent there is massive lawlessness and a real risk to someone like Sonnen who bad mouths Brazilians in such fashion. If I were Sonnen I would keep a very low profile all the way through and only come out for the fight itself.

Great, another fight for Sonnen without a meaningful commission providing oversight, while he still hasn't been re-licensed by the commission that suspended him. It isn't a coincidence that he made his return in Texas and that the UFC seems hesitant to book him on a Vegas card.

Yea, maybe Chael can enlighten us regarding any progress being made with regard to his re-licensing. Perhaps it is something that he will continue to simply work around given the expansion of the UFC into even more markets world wide.

I enjoyed the first fight, But I just can't understand the fact that Chael's submission defense is so weak, I can see the Exact thing happening to him again. If you look at his career thats really been his biggest problem, I hope he can pull it off but doubtful.

They will fight in Brazil, is the only way to motivate Anderson for a rematch, after all he submit Chael Sonnen already, this fight in Brazil is good, because after all good thing Chael said about Brazil people, Anderson Wife etc, Brazil is the perfect place to make this fight happen.chael will not be kill because the Brazilian people are going to show the world they are one of the most respectful countries

you will see, is the only way he will fight Chael 100% motivate to put a great show, for you fan. Chael do not deserve a rematch just yet but, it that happen the best place should be in Brazil not questions, the perfect scenario, Chael the offender villain, has the opportunity he was looking for , get belt from Anderson in from of his own people, that sound good Chael Sonnen Fans.

The UFC is based out of the United States. Just because a title holder is from Brazil, Mexico, or Canada doesn't mean that's where it is defended. Hell they should fight for the title in Canada and have no Canadians on the card. It would still be a sell out crowd.

Past that "great" fights have always went to the best 2/3. If Chael wins be for sure there will be a rematch slotted right away. Anderson is about as excited to fight Chael as GSP is to fight Diaz.

    Yes,when Silva had a bruised (broken?)rib.

Look for SIlva to taunt, humiliate and stop Chael in the 2nd round-he could do it in the first round but that would be too quick.Feather fisted Sonnen poses no threat

Silvas last 4 rounds have seen him stop 3 opponents in 3 different ways. Also rememer the crushing right hand just before the sub that caused Chael to go limp-imagine if Anderson virtually knocked Sonnen out from the floor what he will do in the standup.

Feather fisted??? Some of Chaels shots knocked down Anderson Silva. I cannot recall to many other people being able to do that to Anderson, can you? Just because Anderson is really tough and can take a lot of punishment doesn't make Chael a weakling.

We consider him the best because Chael has been beaten by a few guys now that Anderson has dismantled easily. Chael has a particular style that suits Andersons and thats all. If Chael becomes champ he will never have a record like Andersons. Anderson would have to lose 7 fights to compare to Chael. Silva is the best fighter bar none but he definetly has his hands full with Sonnen. Chael had a visually off Anderson Silva when they fought.

I've always found this, "Anderson got lucky" to be pretty weak. Yes Chael has a style that is very dangerous to Anderson Silva. But Chael Sonnen's over-aggressive ground and pound style is why Anderson submitted him. Go back and look and you'll find the same thing happened with Forrest Griffin, Jeremy Horn (three times), Babalu, Trevor Prangley and Paulo Filho. Chael Sonnen wasn't just clumsy one time, he's been doing it for his entire career!

Take a moment to think here: Choke submissions are killing moves. In a true life or death fight, Anderson lived and Chael died. When you're dead, you can't really argue that you won now can you? If MMA were real life or death fights, Forrest Griffin killed Chael in 2003 and we aren't even having this conversation. You seriously want to let Chael off the hook for "getting clumsy" and letting his opponent successfully execute a killing move?

I. now you don't like him because he did not finish some fight, but gest what Sonnen only had 1 finish in the UFC hes record is Suck the only big thing he has done is give up to the champion and you liked it masochistic people at the end the belt still on the Champion waist. Anderson has the right that Sonnen lack. I'm pretty sure Chael will give her ass to Anderson to fight again and you will love to see that, because is just entertaining Lol

nobody has achieved records like Silva has in the UFC, he won 15 fights in a row, some of them fairly easy, that's why he's considered the best in the world, go ask Forrest Griffin about that, or Rich Franklin.

I think Anderson fans are worried Chael learned a few things from their first match. Had them sweatin! I'm betting on Chael "the orkin Man" Sonnen. Why would Anderson turn down a rematch? Does he think Chael might not make a mistake this time? Who else ever has dominated him the way Chael did? He got caught slippin & got subbed. Every king gets DE-crowned at some point. My guess, Chael wins & gets sponsored by Raid bug spray!! Chael Sonnen for ambassador of Brazil!!!!

your comment show that you do not know the fundamental about martial arts. from the Japanese and Chinese they are the reason of the martial arts they show always respect for their opponent, before and after the fight. Chael Sonnen do not believe on that, that's why he is a loser and still a loser. he do not have any fundamental or respect for martial arts.

he said he had beat every champion in any competition but he do not have any belt yet. he need to be more decent in other to be a decent fighter.

The thing that I find interesting is the thing about pressure coming from "inside Brazil" (ie Globo TV). Even his own people want him to give Chael a rematch.

This fight is going to happen! I suggest Chael make a WWE-style entrance, rising up into the cage from underneath, otherwise the walkout could get ugly.

If he wins, helicopter waiting on the roof. These folks take their sports pretty seriously...

I don't know if he will win, but I just watched the first fight again and he has a better chance to beat Silva than anyone else.

And I think Chael would fight Anderson on the moon if he had to. His balls are big, but that could just be from the testoterone.

Really? You presume all of us Chael Sonnen fans are a bunch of hairy triangles? Do you vote against your countries fighters? I think Chael has a legit chance, out of anyone else so far, of winning a rematch. Oh, when you support a fighter that someone else doesn't like, are you a pussy for it? These fighters have more balls & talent as an athlete than most. So as you sit there achieving your gold belt for being an arm chair warrior, don't presume we all are arachnophobic. Chael isn't is he? Now back to the intenet name calling you do so well.

While I would love to see a rematch of Silva vs. Sonnen in Brazil, I am not sure that is a good idea.

People joke about the safety of Sonnen, but I believe it is a real concern. Not only Sonnen's safety, but also those of innocent bystanders. I could see a riot breaking out if Sonnen happened to win--and even if he loses.

Brazilians are extremely nationalistic and very passionate and proud. There have been soccer riots in the recent past--so the possibility is not remote.

If there was a riot at a UFC event, it would set back the sport in Brazil, and perhaps be used in other nations to block the introduction of MMA.

You have a point certainly, but MMA is not the biggest sport in Brazil. Canadians LOVE hockey. The big sport in Brazil is soccer. If MMA is the second biggest sport (and I doubt that it is) then MMA is a very, very distant second to soccer.

At this point, Chael might want to start making nice with Brazilians rather than tossing in an extra insult with his apology for the last round of insults.

Matt Serra had some less than kind things to say about French Canadians, but Montreal let Matt Serra in and out without killing him. Granted, Serra lost, but even if he'd won do you think that he'd have been mobbed and killed?

just the fact that the argument between who is better should solidify the reasoning behind this rematch and how it should happen soon. I mean everyone already knew that, but restating it just adds to the cause.

Underlying thing: Anderson Silva has taken a tactic that you seldom see in fighting. Rather than saying, "How dare you call me out, I'm gonna kick your ass" -- which is exactly what Chael Sonnen wants -- he's saying "Cheater and disrespectful ass, he doesn't deserve to fight me and I'm not fighting him."

There's a certain justice to this. Chael Sonnen will lie cheat, steal and make up crazy stories in hopes of getting his rematch. Rather than rewarding him for acting like a deranged lunatic, Anderson Silva is punishing him by refusing to give Chael what all of Chael's idiotic behavior is focused on getting.

I think if Chael can admit he lost, admit he cheated and agree to fight in Brazil, and offer up reassurances he won't cheat again, Anderson Silva will give him his rematch. Anderson is holding all the cards here and even Dana White may want to be careful about forcing the issue. Does DW want to kick out his most dominant champion ever for refusing to fight a raving lunatic who cheated? You want AS in Bellator, making your only viable competition credible?

Stop slinging shit at the man and throw Anderson a bone and maybe we all get the rematch we want to see.

Hillarious to see the number of people who don't comprehend Chael's schtick for what it is. I happen to think it's genius. High level talent gets you so far, showmanship gets you recognition. Combine the two, it gets you a broadcasting job after your fighting career is over.

As far as Chael fighting in Brazil., I would seriously question the sanity of that without some high-level POTUS-like security plan.

I've been there, love Brazil, love most of the people, but there's an enormous segment of the population in Brazil who are basically primitive chimpanzees. Gather 50,000 or 100,000 of them in an arena, maybe 1 in 10 will understand Chael's showmanship for what it is. The rest will have monkey ape-rage and I wouldn't want to be the one guy in the middle of 100,000 of those stupid baboons.

I think the vast majority of us see right through to what Sonnen is doing. He's trying very hard to paint a target on himself -- one that Anderson Silva just can't help but attack.

There's also a certain amount if brilliance in Anderson also seeing right through it and refusing to be baited. Consider the wording that Anderson is using: "There's no room for that behavior in this sport." Those are the words of one Dana White after Anderson made an idiot of himself in a title defense against Demian Maia. Nice little reminder to Dana to say, "Hey, you threatened to kick me out of the UFC for acting like this guy is acting now. And on top of it all, the guy is an unrepentant cheater. So make good on your word and kick him out of the UFC!" Kinda lines Dana White up to contradict himself if he forces the issue. Or does Dana tell Chael to knock if off? It's also a very mature reaction to grade school style bullying Chael is using -- simply ignoring him.

Putting the fight in Brazil gives Anderson a reason to actually fight Chael rather than just busting Chael's balls by refusing to give him what he wants. What you need to do is start figuring out if you can keep Chael Sonnen safe in the process. Chael Sonnen's mouth is becoming a huge liability. You might do this fight in Japan ... except Chael insulted the Japanese calling all of their MMA fake. He can't fight in California or Nevada yet because of his cheatin ways. Has he managed to piss off Canada yet? If not, maybe he can fight there, but they likely will hold with NSAC and CSAC rulings. Therein lies the not-so-brilliant part of Chael Sonnen acting the part of a pompous self-aggrandizing deranged lunatic. There's a limited number of places he can even fight right now and his mouth is narrowing the field even further.

You completely, completely 'don't get it'.

    Chael is playing a role.

Once upon a time, large groups of people actually took WWE type wrestling seriously. Obviously, unlike MMA, we now realize it's entirely 'high impact theater', but some things were learned. "Heels" earned more. They engendered more attention. Chael is simply playing the role of heel and he's doing it brilliantly. The fact that some people acknowledge this yet cannot bring themselves to NOT take him seriously proves that he's smarter than they are.

See John Jones through John Jones eyes, you will sell John Jones what John Jones buys... Chael sees MMA fans through their own eyes and is playing a role perfectly tailored to their sensibilities. Really, it's all upside. He either wins fans, or gains attention. You don't have to like it. but some of us acknowledge it for what it is. Brilliant.

You have some well thought out replies. Some of them even make me look at things a little different.

What I still fall back on is UFC =MMA. There is no one skill set for fighting. Wrestlers and boxers are mean and nasty. In the end its fighting. Fans root for the fights because of the build up and activity in the fights. If AS doesn't shake hands with Chael no one cares. When was the last time people showed up for a BJJ match by the 10's of thousands or wore their BJJ shirts everywhere. Once again this is MMA not sensitivity training. No one needs AS to teach the world respect that's what we have Gandhi for. He gets his by doing his job and beating ass. Chael is selling himself to the world and we are listening.

I think we can all agree then....If Chael goes to Brazil....Win or Lose....He might be leaving in a body bag....I think that's why A.S. is even agreeing to this fight. He's thinking if this guy dumb enough to come into Brazil and fight me for this "12lbs of gold" sure I'll agree to that, but the undlinging of it all is AS knows he's a dead man if he does. This might be his way of getting rid of Chael once and for all....Chael here's some free advise and I think everyone here can agree no security can protect you from an angry mob especially if your trapt in a statium....think about it man....Your mouth just might be a two edge sword it got you recognition but i might just get you killed as well....

I think people are VASTLY over-stating the threat here. Yes Chael Sonnen would be in danger because he felt the overwhelming need to combine acting like an asshole with dry-humping every media-owned camera he sees. But the Brazilian people have more self control here than they're being given credit for. Brazil's passion is soccer, not MMA. I don't think you'll get a full scale riot out of Chael Sonnen showing up, but NOW IS THE TIME to start asking Brazil what they can do to ensure Chael's safety. And I think putting it out there like that would go a long ways towards shaming the Brazilians who would have rioted into not rioting.

You have a lot to be gained by putting this in Brazil, I think it's foolish to just cast the idea aside without giving it a second thought. I do think that DW and the UFC are supremely stupid if they don't see the potential for this event. Booking the same location? Lame, lame, lame! You could sell 80,000 tickets to this thing, why would you put it in a tiny arena?

You suck mind-blowingly hard at logic.... I mean, yeah, Brazilian fans are passionate about soccer... But the 50,000 who show up for a MMA match can be safely categorized as "Brazilians who are passionate about MMA" and based on the huge chimp-element that lives in Brazil, I don't exactly think we can rely on their high-minded behavior. They're not exactly known for their self control. Is there any doubt that there's some chimp who think's he'd be defending the honor of his country by doing something stupid? Yeah, there's no doubt there... The scary part is, being Brazil, it may be 90% of the people who show up for the fight. But OK, go ahead and pretend that reality doesn't exist. You're just like that pretty blonde reporter who waded into the riot in egypt and got raped. Idealism is fine, but reality matters more when boots are on teh ground.

Brazil is a country where gang members openly carry heavy machine guns in favelas. They even have favela tours sanctioned by the gangs--but the tour guide warns people not to stare too hard at the thugs with the machine guns.

People, it's all a show made to 1, get attention. 2, invoke the passion of the fans to want to see this fight.( look at what it's already done to all of us here). 3, to gain a bigger draw for a larger payday. In the end it's a fight, the more attention you get the more money there is to be made. Dana would have calmed Chael down or backed him off if it was an honor thing. It's all about the money to be made, a lot of it. It's all part of the show. I'll admit, a little over the top (disrespect). Who said "all is fair in love & war? Chael is begging for attention, well I think he got it! What fighter doesn't want the belt? That's the whole reason these guys are fighting for. When there is bad blood between two fighters isn't a better reason to follow it. You will always choose a side, it's in the human spirit. Competition is just a way of life, nobody wants to be on the losing team do they? Listen, we all want to see this fight, we all have a favorite we support. Win or lose we all get to see the greatest fighters fight.
