News broke earlier today that Alistair Overeem had signed a contract with the UFC and that his first fight with the promotion would be against former UFC champion Brock Lesnar.  The fight will take place on December 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

The winner of that bout will jump to the front of the UFC s heavyweight pack, putting themselves in line to face the winner of the Cain Velasquez versus Junior dos Santos Heavyweight title bout that is set for the first UFC on FOX card.  Velasquez will defend the title he took from Lesnar on that card, which will take place on November 12 from the Honda Center in Anaheim.

During a recent interview Overeem revealed that he had been offered a shot at the winner of the Velasquez versus dos Santos bout, a fight that he did not want to wait for, “I was actually offered an immediate title shot but I would have had to wait first of all for the fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos and then the winner of that fight would have needed to rest, then they would have had to have a training camp to fight me… it would have been the middle of next year before I got to make my first fight in the UFC.” – To read the entire interview visit FightersOnly

    Smart move !!! I mean "RASHAD" showed everybody the blueprint on how NOT to do it! waiting for a title shot is a waste of "money" and a big RISK !! You never know what the future holds..

    money doesn't buy title shots bro. most people would have done the same if they earned the #1 contender spot. overeem was fixing to get handed something i can see why he wanted to fight instead of waiting because he hadn't earned anything so it wasn't worth waiting

    @Nik_hHulstein

    Now u mention that fighters like money I see that fighters have a lot in common with women. They both like money, they both like to trash talk and most important they like to lay on the ground with their legs wrapped around ur waist. Sounds kinda weird if u think about it hey

    Good for him. This shows he is not afraid to risk losing his shot.

    He's facing a man who has terrorized prairie dogs (and various other small vermin) the world over, armed with nothing but an assault rifle. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

    Alistair is a good solid striker, Brock good wrestler, its gonna be interesting who gets to what position first, I don't think Brock will make the same mistake and exchange punches again, IMO it's Alistair's responsibility to bring something unexpected.

    Hopefully he shoots for the takedown. He should train with Olympic wrestlers, and not just strikers in Golden Glory

    If Ubereem throws first, he wins, if Brock takes out his feet first he wins. If it aint either of those it is the first person to sucks up all the fuel in their massive gass guzzeling V16 engines and pass out on the canvus cause of lack of oxigen

    It's fun to rip on Lesnar's hillbilly douchebaggery and general boorishness, but suggesting he's not a legit fighter is extremely lame. The guy does not duck away from challenges and has beaten some seriously good fighters. Come to think of it, he's beaten more top 10 heavyweights than Alistair has...

    He would have been ripped in a title shot... seems as though he used to be amazing, but now talks more game then he can supply. To get into the ring, and have the amount of hesitation he does, it says allot about self-assurance and being fearful of what the opponent can do.

    awesome! I think brock will take this by submission or ground and pound. Imo overeem is overrated. but we'll see how he looks against ufc-competition.

    This is a no brainier for Allister really, if he waits he gets rusty and doesn't get the money from the Brock fight, if he doesn't wait he gets the Brock money fight and a title shot after. Oh yeah btw Allisters takedown defense is absolutely sick.

    I'm SO glad atleast one of the best p4p from outside the UFC hasn't hesitated to come into the UFC and to the top of the heap. We won't see The Last Emperor here, ever, but I love Allistars viewpoint and perspective. The UFC went through a definite dry point, now its fire. We need Hector Lombard here also!
