Frank Mir vs. Daniel Cormier booked for Strikeforce event in October or November

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir has volunteered to temporarily move over to Strikeforce to face Daniel Cormier in that promotion’s final Heavyweight fight. Although Cormier is undefeated at 10-0, Mir represents a huge step up in competition.

In an interview with USA Today, UFC President Dana White confirmed the move: There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense. The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”

This bout will take place in October or November of this year, most likely as a five-round main event. Both fighters will transition to UFC after the bout, with the winner in line for a shot at the title.

Terrible mach up for Mir - a guy with fast hands that hits hard (Mir's weakness) and an Olympic wrestler who will stuff Mir's takedowns with ease.

Only two ways I see this fight going Mir's way; Mir pulling guard and going submission crazy or going for a BJJ sweep (might catch the wrestler Cormier off guard), getting rocked Nog style and either coming out on top or getting some sort of Hail Mary sub.

Both those situations seem very unlikely, Mir tries to stand up too much, extremely unlikely to pull guard and Cormier will go for the KO and not give Mir time to recover via a sub attempt.

Hard to not see it not going Cormier's way via KO.

Cormier is a bad matchup for anyone. Really bad for Frank Mir.

I like Cormier ,and I think he will win, but I hope to see an Upset.

Mir is one of my favorite HW . I hope he will find a way to win somehow

Mir is game i'll give him that, but I agree totally with Keith. Unless a miracle happens, Cormier will dispatch Mir quickly and violently

Guest Yeh you gotta give credit where credit is due, Mir is game stepped up to fight Junior, and now cormier, the junior fight was a smart choice, he won he is the champ, he loses....well he dont drop to far down the rankings, no1 truly expected him to win, however cormier is a different kettle of fish, to the huge crowd of fans that think mma=UFC they are gunna see mir get most likely beat off a guy that is the champion of a company that is surely soon to be dropped. If he wins cormier it does not cause waves in the HW divison, if he loses...well i dunno Cormier is gonna blow up in the next 12 months, but a loss, will surely put Mir as gatekeeper status, he cant really hang with the top 5, although a brilliant win against Big nog...it was Nogs fight to lose, and lets face it, if he loses its gonna be from a KO...how much longer can he keep exposing that chin of his? All 6 of his losses are KO/TKO he needs to work on his stand up defense to be considered a force...modern day HW have more all round skills, his wrestling is pretty poor and his striking is moderate at best and his jits is world class, top 5 fighters excel at atleast 2 aspects of mma and are decent in another...he needs to remould his game, add things to it, mayb its just to late in his career to be a top 5, or a threat to the division.

sharped you for first half of your statement but I would say Mir's stand up is better than moderate.

Mir has really good technical and powerful striking but has no chin to back it up.

If you watch Junior he isn't afraid to drop his hands throwing a haymaker or go hard with a combination leaving himself open - he has been tagged quite a few times doing this but he just shakes it off whereas Frank goes stanky leg.

It's an unfortunate and unfair physical aspect of this sport but it's what makes guys like GSP and Edgar, who don't have granite chin but yet are still top 10 P4P, so special

I used to think that Franks standup was good...but you gotta look closely at who he has fought to give you those views, he beat a washed up cro cop, knocked him out, i am sure he dropped Kongo before submitting him, and he KO'ed big nog....also a well past his prime fighter who was allegedly suffering from a staph infection....I actually believe this claim. Once he fights people with decent to elite level stand up he gets knocked out...Vera, Carwin, Junior. those wins against lesser oppents with the KO's gives an illusion of a good stand up fighter.

No Frank...don't do it. I'm a fan but let's be real for a minute... Frank has hit the point in his career where he can't take a shot. He gets put on "spaghetti legs" really quick now. Cormier throws tons of power... on par with JDS ... Frank is going to sleep in the 1st round IMO. But... stranger things have happened... I thought he was done when he fought Nogeria and look what happened.

Should be fun to watch if nothing else.

CORMIER is favorite for certain but he has not got the punching power or foot work that JDS has!

i would not count out MIR out yet!

In the HW division i always say, on any day any HW can knock out anyone. But even for a HW Cormier is packing bombs in those punches....like serious power.... maybe not the foot work, but his hand speed is also off the chart, his movement is good, and his speed of getting in and out is exceptional....I wont count Mir out...but i bet the ref will.

Who will be the strikeforce champion? Because both will in the UFC meaning that they will have to vacate the StrikeForce HW belt right?

Or is StrikeForce closing down after this bout?

I don't get it why not Just fight in the UFC to begin with.. Who ever wins will not be defending their title or will the winner stay in StrikeForce till he loses the belt?

Actually Mir has a lot more to loose. Mir has only lost to top competition and big names in the last few years, while Cormier is known to hardcores he is mostly unknown (along with all of Strikeforce) to the casual fans.

This is the biggest name by far that Cormier has fought and the best fighter he has faced yet.

Cormier losing only proves he needs a little more time in the game, which is understandable since he is so young in the sport.

Mir losing only proves he is mostly done fighting top competition and at the end of his illustrious career.

Mir is a loser and always gets the best fights.Wath if he wins will he fight JDS again i dont think so.I don't see the point of this fight.Champion shuld fight a champion dosent mater weach organisation.this fight is just to make UFC look good if Cormier losses.

How is this a huge step up for Cormier? He destroyed Big Foot and he just won a convincing decision against Josh Barnett. Frank Mir is on par. I actually think this is a step down from Barnett. Cormier will win this fight decisively.

No way does this fight make sense. If anything, Mir should be fighting Barnett since they're both coming off loses.

DC should be getting a top 5 guy.

I think this is probably the best match up they could have made. Mir is a borderline top 5 and while he is coming off a loss, it was against the best HW in the world who has run through everyone. Mir had a nice streak against big names before the title loss.

Mir is a step up from Barnett and apart from Mir there isn't anyone else who could go over; Werdum just left Strikeforce, Bigfoot already killed by DC, Cain is his teammate, Carwin is on a 2 fight losing , Big Nog is injured and Reem is still on suspension.

I hope Mir is this big of an underdog on lowpick so I can get me some points! Mir wins this one guys. He has more wins over bigger names than Cormier has total fights. Cormiers the champ of Strikeforce. They suck so bad they have to send a guy down from the "A" list.

Seriously though, all of the SF HWs are in the UFC now and they have been holding their own. You also can't go by who Mir has fought. You have to go by style. Cormier is a great wrestler who hits hard. Mir has a very suspect chin and won't be able to dictate where the fight happens. Cormier will likely win via TKO.

Not even suspect, his chin sucks, but every heavyweight has KO power and he still has a solid record against top tier guys. I could see the fight going like the Barnett fight, but as long as Mir is loose he will do fine standing with Cormier. All I'm saying is when Mir wins I get 60 points if he loses I get -5. Risk and reward.

Mir is a better technical striker (with more power) than Barnett. Maybe his size plus his experience can give Cormier problems.
