Yeah he looked awful...the only reason he looked half-decent in his stand-up was because Shields has such horrible striking defense.

I think he'll definitely end up going to the UFC b/c the UFC will be willing to overpay for him just to screw over strikeforce, if Shields leaves Strikeforces MW division has no legitimacy, they have Mayhem/Hendo (both beat by shields) and Lawler and Cung Le who isnt truly elite.

I also think Shields has earned the right to stay at MW if he chooses. Both in the fight and in the weigh ins he looked every bit as big as Hendo and I think has added enough muscle to be a legit MW. That being said Dana will still try to get him to drop down.

JAKE SHIELDS SUCKS! go to ufc.com and check out the WW division,do you honestly think that he could last there?he almost got knocked out in the first round to a ufc hasbeen, jus imagine him going to fight the ufc future....alves,paul daley, fitch, hardy, hughes(old but would still kick his ass)koscheck, paulo thiago, swick and not to mention GSP....shields is slow and out of shape...cant go 5 rounds....he was hitting like a girl by the third round...sure he "dominated"hendo....but the fact remians shields is/would not be a top 10 guy,let alone a champ if he went to the UFC

shields would be even worse off if he went to the UFC and stayed at middleweight...imagine the UFC champ ANDERSON SILVA vs JAKE SHIELDS the STRIKEFORCE champ....no contest!!!! or JAKE SHIELDS vs anyone else in the middlewieght division(UFC)

You do realize Shields has already fought and beat Daley (and Daley was favored in that fight as well) and I think him against fitch would be a really interesting grappling matchup (although I can only imagine the boos that fight would draw). Alves probably would beat him but there's no reason he can't take hardy down and control him, swick isnt as good of striker as everyone used to think and I don't really see him outclassing shields completely in the stand up, hughes would be an interesting fight, I'd probly see hughes winning a close fight there same with Koscheck probably.

No shields wouldnt ever be a UFC champ I don't think but he's certainly more of a contender than a lot of people who are UFC mainstays "cough" Chris Leben *cough* Clay Guida

jake shields alredy beat Paul daley at ELITEXC

and he alredy beat john fitch and diego sanchez at grappling fights!

im not sayin he can beat Fitch in the UFC but i think he has a realistic chance to make some noise in the welterweight division

besides he alredy has the experience fighting guys like Robbie lawler , paul daley and now Dan Henderson!

and he learn one thing he can take a punch! Bisping got ktfo while shields recover pretty well i was impress by that

maybe 1 or 2 top guys in the ww to see if hes worthy to fight GSP

Sheilds was way slower at middleweight then he would be at welterweight. mike swick would get owned by jake all day long.you mentioned all those guys and just think about this they all would get spanked by hendo if they fought cathweight against him. And jake raped hendo for three rd's.God damn it I cant stand shields but I must congratulate his limited lay and pray skill

Meyhem almost choked Shields out and Lawler and Scott Smith are dangerous opponents for anyone. I actually think that if Anderson ever loses it will likely be to someone like Scott Smith who can get the crap kicked out of them for four 1/2 rounds and then pull out a single punch KO, not an elite striker or jiu jitsu fighter. Strikeforce has plenty of legitimacy in it's MW division and will acquire more as time goes by.

Ya i might've worded that a bit harsher than reality but still it would be a huge blow to strikeforce, Hendo was supposed to come in and win the 185 and 205 belt (and if shields can take him down that easy King Mo is absolutely gonna sodomize him on the ground) but he just pretty much got embarrassed by Shields and if their MW champ leaves the only other options are mid-range fighters or guys Shields has already beat, if hendo was champ they could legitimately talk about having a champ that could challenge Anderson Silva.

And on the scott smith/anderson silva comment that's why the Cote fight was so disappointing in my mind. I didnt think Silva's performance was poor at all but Cote was just eating shot after shot from Silva and he has the power to end a fight in one punch.

This is what the smaller organizations are good for, this is why they're good for fighters. They're farm teams. Shields can do well in the UFC, he should.

It was "good" for the sport and for Jake? No, it's a spectacle and they treated him like crap. They are not all about giving fans a fight, they have a big corp mentality vis-a-vis the network and Showtime. I just picture a bunch of suits sitting around a table:

"Great, so we got that guy from Cream or Dream or whatever, who left Dana, Herndo is it?; so let's put him in a title fight asap to make some money!"

    Screw those guys.

All someone has to to do is stuff Shield's take-downs and it's over. A 10 year old girl hits harder than him.

it's not that easy. jake is a master on the ground. the first time they hit the ground was on a sub attempt by hendo that shield defended and turn himself to top position. and when your mounted and shields is smacking you, i doubt it feels like a girl at all. unless that girl is cyborg.

Okay, but it's wrestlers who have the best ability to stop take-downs. And Dan Henderson is a super-elite wrestler.

Jake Shields should stay in strikeforce. He has zero punching power and just average BJJ.

Watching Dan Henderson lay with his hips flat on the mat, no shrimping, hip bumps, or any pro-active movement to better his situation.

Just goes to show why Henderson is in Strikeforce.

The only one I would believe is quality enough for the UFC was Melendez. That kid has a very bright future..

Agree with the complete absence of a guard from Hendo but I think you have to put shields in the top 5-7 for sure now and how can you say King Mo isn't good enough for the UFC, with his wrestling credentials he'd be absolutely hyped to death much as Velasquez, Jones and Davis are. For that matter I think Mousassi is still a top 10 lwh, he just clearly needs to work on keeping his distance and take down defense a bit more, but fact is he'd never faced a wrestler as good as King Mo.

Also glad everyone should now know how over rated Aoki has been, anyone with decent hands and good takedown defenses can beat him

Aoki is not overrated. He is still very dangerous. Don't take away from Melendez. He played that masterfully.

King Mo's cardio would get him bounced out of the UFC fast. He looked very strong against Mousasi, but if you think he is going to be allowed to do that to some of the top level performers that are in the UFC LHW division you are nuts.

The difference between Velasquez, Jones, and Davis. Those guys all have some serious all around skills. Mo was impressive, but don't make it out more than it is.

I'm not trying to take away from Melendez, but the blueprint for beating Aoki has been there forever. Have moderately competent stand up and be strong or have good take down defense. I honestly think Clay Guida could beat Aoki. What really impressed me about Melendez was the fact he actually enganged Aoki in his guard and was only ever in danger of being submitted once in the first round. I think Aoki really hurt himself not training in a cage but Melendez did a great job on the ground.

I think the announcers made too big of a deal about Mo's cardio, yes he was tired but he still had the heart to keep going. Who knows maybe the title fight, or cbs let nerves get to him and he just had a massive adrenaline dump in the first round. I'm not saying Mo's top 5 or anything but the UFC would be building him up as a potential future champ at this stage in his career.

Your comment about Shield's BJJ is just plain ignorant. Go to some BJJ tournaments and talk to some of the black belts about Shields. The dude is sick and everyone in the BJJ world knows it. I have heard his name come in in many, many seminars. The guy is the real deal. I agree with you about his striking though. I think he is a better BJJ player than an MMA fighter. But now he can go to UFC and prove me wrong.

We've seen much better wrestling from Hendo in the past. I think his hips were flat and movement lacking because he hurt his back. It is really the only explanation that makes sense to me. That being said, I think Shields performance (surviving a flash KO and being rocked a number of times in the first round as well as his superior wrestling) definitely launches him into the top ten MW regardless of Hendo's back. If it turns out Hendo was not injured I think Shields might be top 5.

    1. Anderson Silva

    2 Chael Sonnen

    3 Marquardt

4 Maia (he can still beat ANYONE on the ground)

    5 Shields

There are other possible rankings and I just threw that up off the top of my head but it looks pretty reasonable as long as Mousasi stays at LHW

I have been in the BJJ game for a very long time. I have been in "rival" fights with the Stockton camp up in Northern California. Sorry, but Jake Shields BJJ in MMA has been very lackluster. In BJJ tournaments you don't have to worry about people smashing your face and doing other things to you while you attempt to move. Shields hasn't learned how to do any of that. Having good hip control to stay or place yourself in a dominate position is amazing. Now if he could just learn to capitalize on it.

    Now you understand?

I am afraid Nick and Nate are the only 2 out of that Gracie camp that really put the "A" in quality.

Ok, I see your point. I thought you meant his BJJ in general was just average. Yeah, in his MMA fights, his BJJ has not been up to the level it is in pure BJJ comps. Good point.

Why? If he can out wrestle Hendo he has about a 10% chance of taking AS down and once he does that he might grind out a decision. I don't think he can take GSP down but if GSP takes him down it could go either way on the ground. The guy might not be fun to watch if you don't like wrestling but he sure as hell gets the job done.

Like the announcers pointed out. Wrestling is maybe the most practiced and thought out martial art in the world.

If someone can't appreciate a mix of styles... They should probably stick with K-1 or Boxing. There is no such thing as a kid dreaming of fighting in MMA today, who won't be learning to wrestle.

lol damn, nobody is giving shields credit for a great dominant performance, "Bravo shields". C'mon people stop saying shields isn't a top contender for any of the UFC guys, you're being ridiculous. You people are just being arrogant, i mean if Jake went to the UFC and beat Matt Hugh or anyone of their top contenders, you guys would be hopping on his bandwagon. Every one thought he was going to lose to Dan, but instead he beat him with a great performance. I doubt anyone of the UFC top ww contenders (except for GSP) could move up a class and beat Dan or better yet any mw contenders (except Anderson and possibly Vitor) could beat him.
