Scott Coker: Gilbert Melendez would beat Frankie Edgar

"I believe (Gilbert Melendez) is the number one Lightweight in the world. Believe me, those other guys, I take nothing away from them. Listen, styles make fights, and I'm really looking at Frankie Edgar and Gilbert, that match-up, as to who would win that fight and how that fight would look. Ben Henderson, Cowboy Cerrone, all those guys are extremely talented, but like I said, styles make fights. I think Gilbert and Frankie would be a great fight, but I think Gilbert would come out on top." - For more from Scott Coker, visit MMAWeekly.com

Contrary to popular opinion (and LowKick.com's own Community Rankings), UFC Champion Frankie Edgar is not the best Lightweight in the world.

Instead, according to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, that honor belongs to the San Jose based organization's title holder, Gilbert Melendez. Undefeated since 2009 and currently riding a six-fight winning streak, Melendez recently made his third consecutive title defense, defeating top contender Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision. Though he "takes nothing away" from the UFC's 155-pound elite, Coker is confident that Strikeforce currently houses the division's best fighter in the world, and says that, head to head with Edgar, Melendez would come out on top. But, what do you think LowKick'ers? Is it time for the LowKick community to reassess their rankings, or is Coker just making like Tammy Wynette and standing by his man?

    Food for thought:

I'm not sure "crazy" would be the appropriate term to use for those afflicted by the disorder, but Einstein did, in fact, suffer from Asperger syndrome.

I think Scott is not crazy but full of crap.

Be carefull with what you say Scott, you dont own Strikeforce, it is actually owned by Zuffa who also owns UFC. Your suppose to be an executive who does his job. STFU about who you think who could win. I dont think I have ever heard Dana lay claim who is going to win in a fight.

Coker thought Shields was the man also, well we all see where he is now in the UFC. Just another fighter.......

lol, Im aware of that, but I meant when Einstein first presented his theories, the scientific community labeled him as insane and as time went on, he was found to be genius.

Kanner and Asperger hadn't come up with the diagnosis of "Aspergers" when Einstein died, so it's hardly "fact." Those who speculate that he did suffer from the disorder based solely on biographical info are, in my opinion, not very bright. Most objective experts agree.

Seriously? Let me try and 'splain it to you this way: He was never examined, by anyone, for any psychologicall ailments. Especially one that had yet to be named when he was alive. That's my point, ie: that those who speculate he had aspergers do so based purely on naked biographical history of the man. So, your "fact" is, in my opinion, a bunch of speculative BS.

You do realize that it is something diagnosed by observing one's behavior though, right? The don't need him to submit a blood sample...

"Observing one's behavior" in a clinical setting, not based on biographical information after the guy is dead. Look, seems to me like the only way you're gonna understand what I'm saying is if I grab a bunch of Crayolas and draw you some pretty pictures. Sorry, but I have neither the time nor the patience to dumb my brain down to your level in order to continue this conversation.

    Merry Xmas!

While I think that is an intriguing matchup, I would have to take Frankie in this fight. Coker has a job to do and he's doing it. But Melendez isn't on Frankie's level. I would put several other guys ahead of him including Cerrone, Maynard and even Florian at lightweight.

There's always debate to be had about UFC champs vs champs of other organisations.

I think many opinions on lowkick take the issue too seriously. the reality is there are talented people outside of the UFC too. Some may be better some may not but until they actually fight the UFC champ we'll never know. If Henderson beats Edgar then people cannot automatically assume that the UFC is better, because until they fight it's all just wind bags steaming at the gills.

That's a sign that's all is normal lol. I was joking(maybe) that Cesar might have 2 champs in the UFC from his camp by the end of this coming year and I took quite a hazing. Its ok to be the guy whos says..."maybe so"

I'd love to see Frankie and Gil fight! I think it would make for an exciting bout. They have good hands and they can both take a solid shot all night long and keep going.

But I'd like to see the UFC send Gray or Henderson, or even Pettis over to show that Gil either does or does not belong in that top ten. I think that he'd prove himself more than worthy of a shot at Frankie's belt.

    How does he beat Edgar?

He can't take him down, Gil is not good of his back. Edgar is way to fast and Melendez doesn't have KO power.

Both Edgar and Melendez are some tough champions, both have defended their titles sucessfully and on numerous occasions.

I think that this would be a good fight to see because of the fact that both are champions of differantial branches on the Zuffa tree; which means that this fight is more than possible.

Both Diaz and Hendo made some explosive returns into the UFC after earning some Championship Gold to their resume as a result of the journey in StrikeForce .

Jake Shields is the only exception of a StrikeForce Champion not making a sucessful transition to the UFC. He has had it rough since leaving StrikeForce. Poor guy.

Anyway, so far the StrikeForce Champions are proving themselves a force to be reconed with in the UFC. Which was something that I kind of expected all along. Why not give Gil a shot to prove his worth as well?

Let' see, there was Shields, then Diaz came over as SF WW champ and beat Penn. Then Dan Henderson came over and fought a war with Shogun after wining the SF Light Heavyweight title. And now we have got Alistar Overeem who held the SF Heavyweight Crown.

So that's three more active Champions that have made the jump to the UFC in an effort to be considered the best in the world.

I do think GM has what it takes to beat Frankie. He is just as explosive, good hands, great stamina, good wrestling, strong, just as Frankie is. So i would say 50/50 going either way. As for Jake, i think he just hit a rough patch, and i do think he'll come back strong. Against GSP he did O.K. not great, he threw his game plan out the window, he went for like one take-down the whole fight. As for his last fight, he got caught, happens to a lot of fighters, Look at GSP he also got caught against Matt.

hard fight for both ....I think it may happen ...but only if Bendo wins against Edgar.....I cant see the ufc sending its champs to fight any other promo's champs...doesnt make sense....if they get beat it makes a statement about the ufc and its claim to have the best fighters.

I think we would all love to see these crossover fights ,as fans they make perfect sense....but imagine a ufc champ goes to strike force and gets beat ....hmm then maybe the ufc doesn't haver the best fighters....then the up and coming talent may think i want to fight the best....ill go sign with strikeforce...make no mistake good business comes before good fights.

But if Benson loses against Edgar, why not send him to SF to challange Gil? Or even Gray or Pettis? If Dana is not yet willing to bring Gil to the UFC, then why not send some of Frankies hard tests to gauge Melendez skillset. It would be a win win win situation for everyone!

A win for Gil because he would be able to showcase his talent against some of Edgars previous conquests.

A win for Edgar because he would see how well El Nino fares against like opponants.

And a win for the MMA fan because it would get us salivating to see both of these guy's face each other.

I agree with Scott Coker (a rare occurrence indeed). I believe Melendez is simply better than Edgar. He has all the tools to beat Edgar and unlike Maynard, Gil is bloodthirsty when he hurts his opponent. I can't see him giving Edgar time to recover when he has him hurt.
