"Alistair Overeem is a great fighter. He is very strong and is a very serious fighter. Lately he has won a K-1 tournament, as well. The only question I have [is] how he managed to gain 20 kilos of weight in such a short period of time. But frankly speaking I don't care, if he passes [the] drug tests successfully. - For more on Fedor Emelianenko's appearance on "The MMA Hour" with Ariel Helwani, visit MMAFighting.com

Fedor Emelianenko is one of eight competitors scheduled to participate in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament.  While there have reportedly been requests for the promotion to implement Olympic-style drug testing, no such requirement has been confirmed at this time.  The tourney kicks-off with the promotion's Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Bigfoot fight card, which will feature two quarter-final elimination bouts.  Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio Silva will headline, while former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski will go head to head with Sergei Kharitonov.  Should Emelianenko advance by successfully defeating "Bigfoot," he will await the winner of the Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum match-up, whom he will then face in the semi-final round.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Bigfoot is set to take place February 12th from the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  In addition to the quarter-final match-ups, the all Heavyweight card will also feature reserve bouts such as Shane Del Rosario vs. Lavar Johnson, Ray Sefo vs. Valentijn Overeem, and Chad Griggs vs. Gianpiero Villante.

Thats a preposterous claim. He passed the drug test when he fought Rogers and as long as he keeps passing drug test he can't be legitimately accused of anything. Fedor gets that. Apparently, you don't.

Anythings possible, but I'm convinced its genetics. Look at his brother, he's jacked, and hes known for not being entirely dedicated to MMA and training at as high of a level as he should. Whereas Alistair had to work his ass off to cut to 205 back in the day, and was drained when he did.

why does fedor need to be sucked into this stupid arguement? overeem gained weight so what? hes lost speed but gained power, hes not as skilled an MMA fighter as fedor it terms of over ability i.e wrestling, ground game etc.... i do feel fedor has an advantage over every heavyweight in this competition and feel mayb a loss will of done him some good. Overeem will pass his drugs tests im almost certain of it. The man has worked hard and people hate on him, but i suppose success brings hate but he doesnt exaclty look like he could give a ****. hes on a tear.

Overeem's weight gain wasn't even that rapid (didn't it take him like two years to go from his weight fighting at 205 to what he is now - like 250ish), Frank Mir put on muscle way faster than Overeem did before his fight with Carwin. Overeem may very well be on steroids but I don't think he's any more likely to be than the average top-level mma fighter.

That's fair, the counter that Overeem uses to that is it's just genetics which is entirely plausible too. I know a couple people who look absolutely ripped and have never stepped foot in a gym before but of course we have no way to know this unless Overeem is on steroids and messes up and fails the piss test because it absolutely is incredibly easy to get the drugs slightly modified so they have the same effects but do not show up in tests. You may be right but at least you aren't hanging him for it.

having two belts in mma sounds good on paper, but get real. he beat buentello and duffee to win those belts, far from the elite of the division.

and the cro cop reem faced in 2008 was only half the man that fedor beat the crap out of in his prime.

He's questioning Overeem's weight gain, yet he was about to fight Barnett who has failed multiple drug tests.

    1. If he doesn't care why does he mention it?

    2. He had no problem signing up to fight Barnett who has tested for steroids for than once.

    3. He is scheduled to fight Antonio Silva who has also tested positive steroids.

there most likely is a question to this answer that just isnt being shown, and its not like Fedor is the only one that questions his growth everyone does.

Actually, I watched the entire episode. Fedor was asked what he thought of Overeem's recent performances. He brought up the weight issue all on his own... Immediately following those comments tho, he was asked if he was insinuating "anything" and Fedor said he was not.

Well what he said can be taken out of context, some would take that as Fedor accusing of Overeem of being on the gear. From my point of view Fedor is curious how Overeem was able to put the weight on, in regards to training regime... that's all.

Facts: someone who trains intensly can gain 1-2lbs of lean muscle mass a month without taking anabolic steroids. I put together a spread sheet of Overeem's weight gain over the past 5 years, and I am really surprised. I thought for sure the man is juiced up, and perhaps he is, but based on how much weight he has gained per year, it is possible that he did it cleanly. This assumes he trained hard ALL year round. Note, this weight gain seems to be lean muscle mass by looking at his photos over time. He has not gotten "fatter", he is as lean as ever. Assuming he put on LMM, the results are as follows:

    2006-2007, gained -4 lbs (lost weight) @ 224 lbs

    2007-2008, gained ~14 lbs @ 238 lbs

    2008-2009, gained ~15 lbs @ 253 lbs

    2009-2010, gained ~7 lbs @ 261 lbs

I can guarantee many fighters find a way around the testing, but perhaps Overeem isn't juicing? Can't lable the man until he fails a test.

I agree. Overeem is 6'5" and has a big frame. There are a variety of legal supplements which can assist an athlete in gaining muscle mass, such as whey powder etc.

We know he constantly works out at Golden Glory--including weight lifting and strength and conditioning.

The claims that it is impossible to gain such muscle mass without PEDs is patently false.

I don't know if Ubereem has taken PEDs, but in the absence of ANY evidence beyond speculation--I will give the man the benefit of the doubt.

i suppose he trained his jaw hard all year round too? It's a giveaway and I would bet my house the guy has used drugs of some sort (probably steroids) and cycled when the test came along.

    Two words for yall

    FLINSTONE VITAMINS

No but seriously its hard to say, the guy hasn't failed a drug test so we should give him the benefit of the doubt. He does appear to have bulked up everywhere including the face/head which is troubling. My guess is at some point in his career he may have taken them, but I doubt he has recently (past year or so) or is currently.

I definitely can't and won't label Overeem as a juicer but I still have my doubts about whether or not he is doing it the right way.

Proper steroid use is done in cycles. Depending on a kind of steroid you are taking and knowing when you are going to be tested, you can cycle off in time to pass the test cleanly. I'm not saying the Overeem is on steroids. Just stating that if there is regulated testing (not random, which is Olympic way of testing, if i'm correct) one can easily be on steroids and pass tests with flying colours.

On another note; Overeem is very lean at a big weight, he's not fat or bloated. Different steroids do different things, some make you gain muscle mass while others let you recover quickly. I don't think its all that beneficial to have heavy muscle mass in MMA. The ability to train more is beneficial , rather then looks. Look at Barnett, he surely does not look like he takes steroids, but he did or is one them now, i don't know. So looking good is no good in mma. Logically i conclude that he's just a genetic freak.

Употребление стероидов для российских спортсменов это пагубно, некрасиво и не честно. Если бы Федор употреблял бы стероиды то его не 10 лет, а 20 лет никто не побеждал бы.

Even though many fighters don't use anabolic steroids or banned substances, they still have an unfair advantage. Having a nutritionist put together your meals, and someone providing a whole boat load of supplements to make you stronger (Creatine amongst other things), is almost as unfair to someone who can't afford these luxuries as using steroids is to other top athletes.
