Paul "Semtex" Daley sends Scott Smith face down to the canvas in Round One
Posted on December 4, 2010, 10:29 PM by Anton GurevichThe Amazing night of Strikeforce: St. Louis fight card continued, as Paul "Semtex" Daley viciously knocked out Scott Smith in the first round. Making his Strikeforce debut, Paul Daley looked solid, troubling Scott Smith with a couple of early combinations. Daley saw an opening in Scott Smith's right, as he "semtexed" his way with the left hand. Daley confused Smith by hitting him with the right, then landing a winning blow with a left.
Scott Smith fell with his face down straight to the canvas, as Paul Daley celebrated his official return to the premiere Mixed Martial Arts arena. 25-9-2 Daley called out KJ Noons in his post fight interview, but to tell you the truth guys, he should fight Nick Diaz right away. Apparently, Daley wants to test himself against a top class striker in Noons, but he's definitely currently in a position to get a title shot.

Smith got absolutely murdered. Suck that Dana.
Ya that wasn't a surprise, can't go toe to toe against Daley and expect to win, only fighter I can think of who can stand wit him it Alves
agree only Alves has that kind of power and of course his kicks
i would love to see Diaz vs Daley
im a huge Diaz fan but if he stands wit Daley like he did against Noons, I think he'll get KO'd...Diaz needs to take the fight to the ground asap if they fight
I think Diaz might surprise you. I predict that he will out strike Daley in the same way that GSP out struck Alves. Also, a huge part of Daley's striking advantage comes from his unusually long arms. He is 5'9" with a 74 1/2" reach. That is MW to LHW reach. It makes him very difficult for other WWs to deal with. Diaz has a 74" reach and is both highly unorthodox and efficient. Every time I have ever said Diaz would get out struck, from Lawler to Noons, he has proven me wrong.
I think its a possibility, but i doubt that Diaz could outstrike Daley. Diaz doesn't have a reach advantage he usually enjoys and Daley can also utilize his kicks. Also Daley seems to have a good chin (so does Diaz), and Diaz rarely goes unscathed during a fight. Daley has proved that all he needs is one punch, he couldn't do it against Koschek because of the wrestling gap, but against Diaz in a 5-rounder, Daley could be the next SF champ.
...I would love to see him destroy Diaz. And that's cause I'm Hispanic...
Just sayin im a fan of Daley but he got what he deserved for what he did i hate Kos to but hey cheap shots are **** moves sooooooo why is Dana White being thrown into this?
Seemed to me like a spur of the moment type thing that got blown out of proportion. Dana said "Paul can be the best in the world, he'll still never fight in the UFC again', it's just interesting him being undefeated since he left the UFC.
cus it looks bad for the ufc and mma in general if fighters are throwing cheap shots after the bell, especially when they're trying to get it legalised in new york. so dana had to make an example out of daley, show that the ufc won't tolerate that kinda thing. it's technically an illegal physical assault, and it's seriously unprofessional, whatever way you wanna look at it.
I'm no Daley fan after that crap, however, everyone makes mistakes and everyone, save and except child molesters, rapist and murderers, deserve a second chance. White did what he always does, talked out of his ass based on emotion only,
well talking out of his ass or not, he still got the point across to everyone that if you throw punches after the bell you're losing your contract.
if it'd been a bigger name fighter like oh, i dunno...ANDERSON SILVA *coughcough* ..he might have let him off the hook, like he did when he didn't engage for 5 rounds.
but daley was still only rising through the ranks when it happened so i guess dana just saw it as an oppurtunity to send a message to people, and all he lost was another fighter he could care less about.
I'm with you on that (sending the message), I just thought the "never, ever (insert DW condescending stare) fight in the UFC again" comment was not necessary. He should have held his tongue on the length of banishment cause you never know what is going to happen down the road- redemption, personal growth, maturity etc.
yeah he likes to think of himself as the alpha male in a company that employs fighters...wonder where the logic is there. he's closed the door completely with fedor and his management now with all the shit he's talked and i'm suprised reem still wants to fight there after what he said about him. guess it just means that strikeforce get to absorb all the fighters dana fires because they actually stand up for their contractual rights. the guy is a ****ing dictator.
Daley aint fought a good wrestler yet outside UFC. Soon as he does he'll lose again
John Alessio is a pretty good wrestler and he TKO'ed him. He didn't look awful against Kos or Shields either. I think we forget how much these fighters train and that it is possible for them to make improvements. He doesn't have to be an amazing wrestler, just a defensive one and he would be a very dangerous figher against top guys.
brutal k.o, what a night for strikeforce fighters
Strikeforce has been putting on awesome fights. Its' not just Strikeforce but whomever is the match maker has been making great matches. Eat your hear out Joe. I'm amazed at the strikeforce card, just pure awesomeness.
Mismatches = Brutal finishes.
jo silva is the worst match maker in that world thats the problem.. but SF have been puting on amazing fights for a while now.
Nah, just good fights. Stop being so overwhelming. Go watch GSP GnP guys. I want the excitement back in MMA, not Wrestlers.
Not sure who or what you are talking about...
The point was the "great fight", if that means a brutal knockout, could be the product of crappy matchmaking. Unless of course your a Roman Emperor and like feeding slaves to lions.
Like Cain Lesnar?
The only mismatch last night was the Bigfoot V Kyle fight and that was a short notice throw together. Smith easily had the ability to get Daley to the ground and dominate him but chose (as usual) to stand with someone who is a better striker. Lindland is probably on his way out but their are always going to be young buck V fading vet fights in any org. Hendo V Babalu was about as legit a match as you can get. It was two guys that have been around forever but are still competitive with the younger guys fighting to see (IMO) who still has a shot at the title and who has to do some thinking about why they lost and if they still have another run in them.
Lol common man thats a ridiculous comment to make. IMO Stikeforce does put on better matchups, but its mostly due to the fact they have less cards, but alot of fighters under contract, so when they do put on a cards they can make their ideal match ups. Whereas the UFC is constantly having to put on cards and deal with timing issues as well as injuries more often than SF.
I can't put my finger on the exact reason, but SF cards have ALWAYS delivered.
their = there
I agree that Hendo vs Babalu was not a mismatch, in fact I picked Babalu to win it : )
Daley vs Cyborg for #1contention
cyborg would get brutalize. not a good fight for him
I think cyborg is an excellent fight for Daley. Not sure Daley wins that so easy.
Cyborg may be the biggest dark horse in all of MMA at the WW division. I know that is a big statement, but this is a guy who has a lot of experience (at 205 and 185), a strong skill set, to go along with a 76inch reach, which is a big advantage at WW. He's lost a lot, but mostly do good opponents at higher weights.
Daley vs Noons/Diaz is a bit more realistic.
Noons would be a great fight. Noons is more technical, and so we can see how he can deal with technical striking as opposed to slugging it out.
If noons shows up he is an amazing striker coming at amazing angles. Not the power of daley but probably quicker when he is in proper shape and very agile. Would be a good fight.
Ye, but we seen how Daley handled Kampmann and Kampmann is as technically good of a striker as their is.
Man if only Daley didnt pull that cheap shot on Kos.....
The best show strikeforce has ever put together almost every fight was a knockout just Awesome!
I think that beats most of the ufc events this year
whats with all the Noons sh*t Noons belongs and should stay at 155
Scott Smith needs to learn how to stick his "paw" out there, as do the Diaz brothers; as do a great number of fighters.
Love them or hate them, one thing you have to respect about Nick and Nate, is how they stick that paw out there; right in there opponent's face. Had SS done that tonight, PD would not have been able to circle off to the left and crack him (out cold) as he did. And on that note, that was a fabulous face flop to the canvas.
I'm not saying Smith would have one tonight, had he adopted a Diaz style (approach), but I am saying he would not have gone down (tonight) in the manner in which he did.
Put your hand out there - should be the first rule of any stand-up; and the Diaz brothers are professors, from whom many (a) fighter(s) could take lesson, from.
Should read...
As per, the Diaz brothers.
Not "as do, the Diaz brothers."
"One" = Won...###k...it's late; my apologies.
I think Scott just over estimated his chin. It happens. Nog did the same thing. All those guys think they can take a clean hit and counter with another. It just doesn't work like that anymore. As MMA is progressing people are learning to roll properly for mma. Soon we are going to be seeing great stand up fights.
i was gonna vote for ufc 116, but after seeing all these exciting fights i'm thinking strikeforce st louis deserves event of the year!
So you have the heaviest hands in the division, perfectly timed strike, other guy rushing forward with his chin up and its like two freight trains colliding. Unfortunately for Smith his train was his chin. I would argue that not even Cabbage would have survived in a similar situation.
folks ill say it again paul daley is a natural born killer...
That boy has some HANDS... for REAL!!!
Daley has got some heavy hands
Diana might have to eat his words some day. This guy is young to so he should keep getting better.
I blinked again...what happened???
Daley is a stand-up fighter (boxer) ... as soon as he faces a wrestler or submission ace he will lose. He has zero ground skills and that never works for long in MMA.
