Paul Daley on Nick Diaz: I’m going to smash him and take his belt
Posted on March 7, 2011, 09:46 PM by Joey Santosus"There’s no way he’ll stand up with me. He might think he wants to but his coaches won’t allow it; Cesar Gracie’s a great coach and he won’t want him trading punches. He’s a really dangerous grappler but he’s got to get in close enough to make it work and I’m not going to give him the chance."
"I’m going to smash him within three rounds ... (and) take his belt. We do have a more complex game plan than that but that’s as simple as I can break it down at the minute. - For complete interview visit MMAHQ.com
After knocking out Scott Smith in the opening round of his Strikeforce debut back in December, Paul "Semtex" Daley was immediately offered a title shot against current Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz. In the meantime, Daley decided to risk the opportunity by taking a fight against Yuya Shirai at last month's BAMMA 5 event. Although the promotion's vacant 170-pound strap was no longer on the line due to the Brit's failure to make the required weight, it took Daley less than two-minutes to earn his second consecutive knockout victory.
On April 9th Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz will make his third title defense when he meets Paul Daley in the main event at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley from the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, California. Also featured will be a Lightweight title clash between division champ Gilbert Melendez and Japanese stand-out Tatsuya Kawajiri, as well as a Light Heavyweight showdown between former Champion Gegard Mousasi and Mike Kyle.

sorry daley, your td defense is weak!
... all so daley your going too find out once again that running that big pie hole u call a mouth . is not going too do you any good! diaz will beat daley standing! tko ko! also i hope you keep maken a huge ass out of your self! see ya on fight night daley!
step one Daley is to make weight lets start there
lol... daley ... thinks his hands are great ! when diaz gets him we are going tooo see diaz jab the crap out of daley while he is in front of him and cant stand or hit him! diaz is going too own daley !
in all honesty, i have never seen ANYONE beat Daley while standing, Diaz needs to take this fight to the ground
maybe he needs to go in boxing or k1 cause mma isnt just striking or one punch ahead
Imagine Daley vs manoef!!
honestly you must be a daley fan ! hae you sen diaz last 3 fights! no his last seven fights! diaz gots battr hands stand up/! and lol on the ground daley is owned all so~! just lok how shields done it ! diaz gots a higher level bbj black belt than shields! i really do think daley is going to be out classed!
hes conquored that realm so why wouldnt you want try at another sport?
i have diaz as a favourite in this fight judging off the masvidal fight BUT i wouldnt be putting any money on it.
Also i think diaz has to win this fight or he has no chance of getting back the UFC!
Ohh yeah forgot about is new contract then...
that comment has just demoted you to brown belt...
What did you want him to say ohhh im gona come out an probably end up in a gogo or something....
@garry. once again gary cant come out with anything constructive, its just a dig at a uk fighter. You come across as a hater of uk fighters rather than an mma fan with a view on something. why?
Agreed ck1 - Gary definately has a prob with british fighters.
Maybe a Brit stole his girl and thats why he's so bitter.
overall i would say that diaz is the favourite due to having more ways to win, daley obviously has the power and he does rely relies on that but we have seen how to totally take daley out of his game plan. The fact that diaz does leave himself open to get hit alot and he does get dropped will play right into daleys hands, and If he takes those chances against daley then he will will probably be dropped and ko'ed. Hard to pick a winner but a really exciting fight however it goes.
I think Daley will spend some time on his back during this fight.
Daleys got a good chance, and the first part of his quote is accureate. He better not make a mistake like Cyborg tho and end up in Diaz's guard.
Daleys constantly improving and I don't think Diaz's wrestling is as strong as KOS. That being said, I think Daleys ground game should be at a higher level then what we've seen, and his explosive hands will walk through Diaz's jab.
As good as Diaz is, I don't think hes at the same level as Daley, and its unfortunate that he sucker punched KOS because I saw him as a top 5 contender for UFC's Welterweight behind Fitch, Penn, Kos, and of course GSP. Diaz has technical yet very predictable hands, and I'm very surprised that he is pursuing boxing.
What? How are Diaz's hands predictable. He has an unorthodox punching style. Holds his arm out and use his hips and shoulder rotation to jab at his opponents from a place most people never jab from. That's an absurd statement. If anyone is predictable it's daley who uses orthodox kick boxing. Technical striking on Diaz's part trumps power. There is always a chance with daleys power Diaz will get ko'd. But just as much of a chance Daley will get upset (since that is his problem) about the jabs and start swinging for the fences. That is when Diaz will take him down and embarass Daley.
On a side note I am surprised of Daley's respect here. His rhetoric is way toned down compared to other fights he has been in.
Everything you have just said there i disagree so either your mentally unstable or taking the mick... either way i'll let you off easy.....
Oh and you are... That's right who cares. Why don't you try using your incredible technical understanding to debate. If you have any
That comment wasnt to you ye freak stop crying you'll get your laptop wet it was for the person you was also bantering with!
well im a master at verbal wrestling so he can shove that freak show style of fighting where his internet connection doesnt shine
That's right. Just like you went to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Uh huh... No I believe you really.
@ corey u are a muppet. Daley is a far better boxer than diaz. and hight didnt stop tyson. diaz only chance is the GROUND
The Fact that you can describe Diaz's Fighting style in one sentence, leans me toward thinking that maybe there is tad of Predictability in his style some what.
movescamp u are a clown daley is a more technical striker
But hey im just a ButGerbal
Huh? Joe rogan describes machida in one word. Illusive. Does that mean he is predictable. What I mean is training partners don't puny like Diaz weird style. Looking at tape and having them thrown at your face are very different. Hence his success with people supposedly better strikers.
Hilarious typo. Punch not puny
wow man this card is looking like every fight will be exciting and relevant, Diaz is the more rounded fighter but like Kevin said as good as Diaz is on the ground I don't think his wrestling/takedowns are strong like Kos so I don't think he'll be able to take down the stronger more compact Daley... and on the feet every1 keeps talking about Diaz hand skills and this and that he throws flurries but I don't seem them damaging Daley whereas if Daley lands it's LIGHTS OUT.
Daley huffs and puffs a good game, saying how he will 'smash' his opponent and knock them out. And he is true to his word many times--but let's face it, wrestlers pone Daley every time.
What worries me is that Nick Diaz is crazy. Diaz does the opposite of cagy fighters like GSP--Diaz actually fights to his opponent's strengths, feeling that is the only way of truly defeating an opponent. This street tough code could end up getting him knocked out.
In his fight with the male Cyborg, he deliberately took shots he did not have to--then taunted his opponent with an "is that all you got" attitude.
If he does that with Daley, he is going to sleep. No one has that good of a chin to purposely withstand the powerful and accurate shots of Paul Daley. I know Diaz's coaches told him in his last fight to take it to the ground ASAP, but Diaz ignored them.
Diaz hasn't lost since 2007. He trains probably harder than most everyone. He takes more fights than most fighters of his caliber. He changes weight. And has only been ko'd once way back like 10 years ago.
We shall see at fight time. Whoever wins, I look forward to seeing this fight.
But I am rooting for Diaz--and hoping he fights with intelligence.
@ movescamp have you not seen how often daley fights
i believe diaz is too smart for daley and will find a way to neutralize him and get to good positions. diaz also is a good boxer with long arms and a granite chin, who trains with andre ward. i dont think daley can hit harder than andre ward. on the other hand, daley has never fought a guy like diaz. we always say nick has to take the fight to the ground to win and he never does. he has beat some real good standup fighters on the feet by outworking them and taking there spirit away. i think he will do the same against daley, but take some punishment in the process. nick diaz by 4th round tko.
Daley over confident will makes him pay imo
This fight is Diaz's to win or lose. If he doesn't let pride get and accepts he will probably get knocked out if he stands, he can turn it into a grappling match and we all know Daley is weak in that department, which is a pity as his stand up is amongst the best at WW.
I think you could cut and paste some of these quotes from the cyborg fight. Nick is a top 5 fighter. Daley is not. At least not yet. First off he has to make weight. Secondly there is a huge chance Diaz gets in his head with his mouth and his jabs. They don't look hard but cyborg got his face pummeled. Thirdly Daley has to make weight. He has missed 5 times. If he does make weight will he be tired?
It's like people just repeat hype they don't a actually analyze fighters. Everybody always says the same thing about Diaz than he stands up with the stand up guy and wins.
Maybe the reason for some of the comments sounding alike is due to actual experience watching Diaz fight, instead of merely parroting announcers or news stories?
Daley hits much harder than Cyborg-- that is why this fight is different. NIck got away with taking damage from Cyborg because he didn't hit that hard.
As for Daley not being top 5, top 5 of what? I think he is top 5 of Strikeforce, but not in all of MMA. Lowkick readers have Diaz at 4 and Daley at 9 with all of the other top ten fighters from UFC.
So Daley is a worthy and highly ranked opponent for Nick.
I am a fan of Nick Diaz, but I believe his status at number 4 WW is probably generous. Some people might believe you are only repeating the Diaz hype when you place him in the top 5.
If Daley defeats Diaz, then I don't see how Diaz can be considered top 5. If Diaz defeats Daley, it will not elevate him in the current rankings.
Sorry dude but unlike most people here I judge fighters on their actual technique. Howthe heck do you know daley hits harder than Santos? That's ridiculous.
Diaz hasn't lost a since since 07" and has been ko'd or tko'd once over ten years ago. his losses to top ufc guys were decisions. Again 4 years ago.
I don't think Daley has a chance here. I could be wrong but he is too volatile which plays into Diaz mind games. He has shields to train with for takedowns and a training partner who not only hits as hard as Daley but is more accurate (at least punching). But yeah go ahead and count him out.
I think Diaz should win this fight if he sticks to a gameplan. if he stands with Daley I am fairly sure he will get Ko'd. he tucks in and lets the shots come at him. Diaz's style of stand up is tailor made for Daley. Daley could eat a few jabs from Diaz no problem but Diaz will not be able to take a few Daley bombs and keep going.
But like i already said, Diaz has other tools in his box to take Daley apart with, he just needs to use them.
"I’m going to smash him and take his belt".
That's funny.....Daley says the same thing before every fight, which is "There is no way he will stand with me". He says that praying that Diaz will just stand in front of him like an idiot, which will never happen, because Daley knows he is a one dimensional fighter.
Diaz will pepper him with punches, take him down, and submit his sorry ass.
LOL, at Daley trying to pull mind games. In reality, Daley is hoping to egg Diaz on to stand with him because this one dimensional tool knows it the only chance he has at winning!
Daley, just make sure you FINALLY make weight so all of out here in fanland can watch your one dimensional ass get choked or knocked the f*ck out!
Barry_Blackbelt above is a ****ing Idiot...no way Diaz KOs Daley...no way !
Daley could hold a belt right now if he had made weight for his last fight. Hope he makes it this time around. Diaz will take him down & Paul will be lost with all the sub attempts Nicks going to throw at him.
But i don't put it past Nick to try & stand with Paul.
Card looks good btw.
Daley sounds like a ****ing boxer, planning on catching Nick on the way in. Nick's hands are fast as ****, the most underrated in the game in my opinion because he doesn't have the power. But when Diaz hits you 300 times in a minute and 294 of them land, no one can deal with that. Diaz's hands are faster than Daley's, at least on a punch-to-punch basis, and he'll be able to hold his own on the feet for a while before dragging Daley to the ground and taking an arm.
Yep
Its not that Nick has fast hands, he just keeps coming and dosent stop until the bell, everyones talkin about daleys power but forgetting that diaz is a triathlete and is probably gonna outwork daley, and for those of you not familiar with triathalons its like a 20 mile run 20 mile bike ride and a 2 mile swim wich is ****ing insane Diaz via 3rd round tko
Whats up with Daley throwing up that Illuminati 666 Hand sign shit up to his eye? Plus his shitty attitude.... Man, I just dont like him
Nick Daiz doesnt have good takedowns so he might have to stand with Daley.
Wow your racist and no Daley will be the winner by KO
i think diaz is ****y enough to stand with him, good luck with that nick.
the human chin is not made out of steel, i don't care who u are.
"I’m going to smash him within three rounds ... (and) take his belt."
He forgot to add, "If I make weight." at the end of that.
This is an interesting fight in my opinion, and it's too hard to making predictions on who's going to "smash" who. Nick has a great ground game, enough to control Daley I think.
Let's not forget, he could shock us and pull off an upset knockout like he did again Robbie Lawler back at UFC 47. On the other hand I don't think Robbie Lawler has the striking power of Daley, but that's just my point of view. Either way, I look forward to see who can back up their trash talk and see how this one plays out.
In all honesty, this is a pretty easy submission win for Diaz if he just fights smart and takes the fight to the ground. You never know with Diaz though, he has stood with other dangerous strikers (Lawler) and been successful.
