title fight, main event, guard was still up, Diaz only landed maybe 4 punches of GnP, 3 seconds left. Dumb stoppage.....yes yes, protecting the fighters from unnecessary damage, he was rocked yeah but the time between rounds would be enough for Daley to come back. Thank God Big John wasnt reffing the Edgar/Maynard II fight -.-

I was really disappointed that Daley let Diaz back him up against the cage so much knowing that's where he does his best work (specially with those small MMA gloves). That's the problem with these stubborn guys though.

i only notice that the ref gives a slight favor to the champ, from ufc or strikeforce. like edgar maynard, lesnar cain and the lesnar pays for the price(big scar on his face) and diaz paul fight but with paul diaz fight, diaz was flat but not out and still holding and crouching to grab pauls legs. all i can says at the end of the day it was an exciting fight and diaz win it fair and square with his own game.

just because he didn't get up straight away doesn't mean he was hurt badly, he might have just been tired or upset.

when someone stops your fight and shatters your dreams maybe you don't feel like getting up, just wanna sit down and take it in for a minute

only reason he may not have answered the call for round2 is if his ankle was messed up

ive seen big john prematurely stops fights but the rest are good, by the way heres the link to remind you if it was stop early. pd is sitting in his stool for the rest untill the announcement. http://www.mmatko.info/nick-diaz-vs-paul-daley-fight-video-strikeforce/

He was stunned but I still think it was an early stoppage. When they helped him up to the stool it was a combination of frustration and being stunned. Not completely him being out of it. Also, they force you to stay sitting on the stool so the doctor can check you out after the fight. It's a safety precaution. What sense does it make to run around complaining when the fight is done...to get a sucker punch? :-D Also, they didn't show on the camera when Nick Diaz tried to rush him while he was on the stool. I'm surprised they cut that out. Early stoppage in my opinion but still a good fight. Daley will just have to improve on the mistakes I saw and I'm sure him and his camp saw too.

stunned? with paul daleys attitude he would rushed to ref and complain and also he would stand and fireback while nick is pointing his fingers while badmouthing. all i see is that you cant do a cartwheel dance when you are not stunned.

I was wondering if it was premature....

Until I seen how he was still out with his eyes open on the ground and couldnt even get up for longer than the time between rounds.

You have to get your head checked if you think that was premature. Diaz came in, pressured him, and took it to the body. Daley was shook up with 2 minutes left in the round. He even did a Brock Lesnar twirl with 10 seconds left of the round. And they had to help him into the stool. You can even see the exact moment in the fight where Daley's eyes rolled back. With all of Big John's experience there was no way he would stop it unless it was necessary.

And and that note, St Pierre vs Diaz wouldn't even be a fight. St Pierre 1st round VIA Making Diaz look stupid.

30 seconds after the stoppage they had to seat Daley on a stool and he was still rocked, a minute and half later he still would not get up the stool, normally when a fighter gets stop prematurely gets up right away and starts complaining, but Daley could not even get up.

I accept your point as a good point however I think that the ref should ignore the time left. He shouldn't watch the clock. I would hate to see an injury because a ref thought he should let it go for five more seconds (10 punches or 5 seconds of anoxic rear naked choke or 5 seconds more of arm bar / knee bar pressure). Stop the figher if the fighter cannot intelligently defend himself. To re-make the rule as "Stop the fight if a figher cannot intelligently defend himself unless there is five seconds left then let it go". That doesn't make sense.

Exactly. He was done. Before Big John stopped the fight he was laying there with his hands by his side not knowing where he was. He was just hoping to make it to the bell to get the shot to recover. But he was out and so that did not happen.

It's not an excuse, that's just a fighter's mentality. Overall, he was really well spoken in that interview, sounds a lot more reasonable and rational about the Zuffa acquisition and when they do merge I feel like he will be welcomed back into the UFC.

he was done he couldnt even stand up and had to be helped to his seat. the fact that there was only three seconds left in the round makes it a hard pill to swallow. but the ref is supposed to stop the fight when a fighter is no longer able or unwilling to defend himself how many seconds left in the round is completly irrelaveant

McCarthy should have let it go, another second and "Semtex" would have been "Silly Putty"! The answer to it all was how Daley got up onto the stool. No-one ever wants to lose a fight so of course he's gonna have a problem with the outcome, but you can tell by the interview that he knew in his heart that he was done!

If the stoppage was premature he would of got up and questioned it there and then, not have to be helped to the stool then sit looking like he didn't know what the **** was going on for 5 minutes

If he wouldn't have laid there for two minutes after the fight was stopped, I might believe him. Since he seemingly couldn't get up for longer than the 1 minute break between rounds, I would have to say it was a good stoppage.

The video shows Daley talking to the doctor ten seconds after the fight was stopped and getting on the stool 30 sec after the stoppage. Not sure where anyone gets the impression he was down for 2 minutes. The commentators were obviously bias towards Diaz. The video shows Daley talking to the doc and big John while the commentators are saying he's still out on his feet.

When the fight was stopped he still had his arms up and was trying to kick Diaz away. Unless McCarthy saw something that the video didn't show , I'd call it an early stoppage, considering it was a championship bout and Daley was winning the round.

I hope Daley gets a rematch ,cause that was an awesome fight. Diaz seems to have been really working on developing power in his punches.

He hit Daley with some hard punches and elbows.

I'm starting to wonder if anyone can knock out Diaz. Daley dropped him twice but Diaz recovers so quickly, its amazing.

Diaz is one of the toughest guys in mma

Dana White gave PD a "shout-out" on Twitter.

Paul Daley - "I want to fight again; here at StrikeForce, The UFC or whatever Zuffa wants to do with me; I'm prepared to fight again."

Entrenched sides - to me, that's clear indication of movement. And we all know how Dana feels about putting on a show and fighters that come to fight.

I'd say, if PD can string together some wins in SF and continue to improve his TDD, his get-back-up abilities, as well as developing some kind of a ground game, that he will be re-signed by SF-UFC and that (eventually) he may well end up back in the big show. Paul should take a solid loss (one from a great fighter in a great 1 round war) and move forward with this / the positive attitude (we see here) and he will, more than likely, find that he will have the success and career that he is working hard for.

    Good luck to PD.

He says he slipped, and then he says it was because of a punch. LOL. In other words... he was wobbled. And he admitted it was from an "earlier" punch... so he's admitting he wasn't recovered when he face planted on the floor. He then took at least 3 GnP shots to the jaw/chin. And then he took two minutes to get up, and even then had to be helped to a stool!

There is only 1 minute between rounds- Paul got TKOed. He had his chance to finish when Diaz got caught with the left. He was afraid of getting on the ground for GnP though. Therein lies the difference between Paul and a top tier MMA fighter like Diaz. It takes more than just striking to win at the top.

Go train your ground, Paul, because you will never win a title fight without it except in the smaller organizations.

Yeah, but the way I see it is, You're already exhausted and Big john already stopped the fight. So whats the point to get up in a rush. Maybe, he just need a minute to soak in the loss. There is no time limit on getting up after you loss. Plus, do you realize that his trainers and team thought he was hurt. So of course they probably saying "relax a little bit let us take a look at it. Don't try and move so much."

Hearing a different tune from both Daley and Dana White now...Paul will be back in the UFC for sure. Daley still had a 'UFC can suck it' attitude until he lost this fight, when he lost his last few bargaining chips. About the stoppage - the way he 'slipped' was more of a wobble-fall, he was definitely not all there. But, I couldn't tell for sure if Diaz was landing hard shots after that point and if Daley was taking too much punishment. It probably could have gone another 3 seconds, but for sure Daley was hurt.

It looked to me like Daley was completely disoriented and thought he was going to be able to lean back on the cage, but the cage wasnt there.

If his balance and orientation was that off, he had to be extremely close to going out.

I just re-watched the fight between Diaz and Daley - at the end of the fight they show a replay of the finish at a good angle, there were a good 5 or so direct shots on the ground that Daley took unanswered. The stoppage was perfectly justified even with only a few seconds left.

Early stoppage?? On what planet did you guys see the fight on? And how many of you have ever been tagged on the chin before? Fight stopped too early my ass...

Other than the fact that Daley is now admitting that Big John did the right thing, Paul was in no shape to continue. He was hurt and his legs were GONE. Even if this fight would have gone another round, it would have only taken one clean kee, punch, elbow, etc to finish hm, or really hurt him.

Take it from someone who has experience in getting tagged directly on the chin and seeing it happen almost everyday at a gym, dojo, ring, etc.

No matter how tough you are, there is a limit to how much punishment your chin can take before you collaspe. And Daley was clearly on the verge of literally dying.

I know exactly what would've happened (common sense). Daley has absolutely no wrestling at all so he would have never been able to take down Diaz and take time to recover. Go back and watch the fight again. Read Daley's lips at the end of the fight. He clearly says "I'm okay... I can't feel my hands or legs."
