Overeem: Fabricio Werdum should be ashamed of himself
Posted on June 19, 2011, 04:58 AM by Anton GurevichStrikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair "The Reem" Overeem looked back at his performance against Fabricio Werdum in the main event of Strikeforce: Dallas, declaring that "Vai Cavalo" should be ashamed of himself. Overeem stated that he's happy, but not entirely satisfied with the victory, and that it takes two for tango when it comes to delivering an exciting performance.
Overeem will now face Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in the semi-finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight GP.

Have to agree with Overeem. Not that Overeem was terribly impressive either, when his cardio shit out in the third, but Werdum's strategy was shitty.
In theory, yes, I know Werdum wanted him on the ground, but maybe instead of flopping around like a dead fish and trying to taunt/lure Overeem in, he should have had a plan to take down and/or control Overeem.
Dropping on your back every time you get touched, or every five seconds, doesn't give you the right to brag about anything in a fight, and he should be ashamed that he didn't come in with a better gameplan when he knew that Alistair wouldn't be stupid enough to go to the ground with him.
Overeem may not have put on a barn-burner, but Werdum should be ashamed of that shit, and he should have known better.
Fail Werdum.
both fighters are responsible for this debacle
overeem was scared of the ground game, and fabricio of the stand up
non-risk motherfcukers !
I don't know with some judging he might be able to do that
every fight and if he cant get the guy to try for GnP and make
a mistake he might get the decision win
Me and werdum both know that he wouldn't be on the ground like a idiot if stomps and soccer kicks were allowed. It is just not a smart strategy especially in a real fight! I hate it when some of the bjj practitioners do that.
Anyways, these are sanctioned rules so he is allowed to do that, but I wish the ref can take points away from a fighter who is getting up slow after being asked/forced to stand.
i wished fedor jumps in the octagon and KTFO them both
Reem kept the fight where he wanted it. That is his perrogative. If Werdum wanted the fight on the ground, he needed to actually take it there. Instead, he chose to spend large amounts of time laying on his back with his legs open, beckoning to Overeem.
Overeem did what he could, but every time he came forward, Werdum flopped to avoid punishment/in hopes Reem would make the same mistake Fedor did. This was 100% Werdum's fault.
you can tell Reem wasnt happy but Werdum fought like it
was an abu dhabi tournament at these level of fight, I can see
flopping down and pulling guard but over and over and not gaining
position, in Pride would of received a yellow card for delaying fight
and Overeem could of dropped in his guard but for a guy to repeatedly
doing the same chit over and over, and since it is what he is known for
.....ahhhh he isnt going to fight on the ground Werdum pulled him down plenty of times played possum hoping to draw him in to a GnP
moment and Reem didnt fall for it.....look if your clinched and you drop
ok, and to just pull guard and throw him off,,,ooook but to fall down crab walk and try to get an ankle..??... at his level is chitty its MMA it starts on the feet and Reem tried to keep it a fight
and the times he went to the ground he layed a couple blows but got up with ease for the most part.. look at this level one mistake and its over Werdum can end it so to stand up would be your goal and sorry
but to fight a guy who wont fight back is pretty hard to make it a great fight feel bad for Reem like I said tho if yellow card was giving we
would of had a true fight and would of been a good fight
nope, if someones gonna take the blame its gotto be werdum...overeem imposed his plan based on his primary strength, werdum couldn't and was even forced into overeems striking plan a few times out of desperation cause he did not have an option, simple.
ok so when ur fighting a bjj wizard and he flops onto his back do you knowingly jump into his guard while screaming "SUBMIT ME!!!!" ? uhm no, when your of striking calibre like overeem, u stay standing and not go outside your OWN gameplan
I was more impressed with werdum that fight than with overeem...not even close
LOL.... another lol....and a BIG LOL! LMAO!
The only thing i am surprised about Werdum is when he was striking with Overeem, but none of that was really affective at all, i was super dissapointed when he was stalling and taunting Ubereem hoping he would get to the ground with him.
Werdum definitely can't brag that.. because he wasn't even able to impose a strategy that could put Overeem on the ground. All his failed attempts to put Overeem down just showed he "FAILED Big TIME!" Overeem fought smart matching with a perfect sprawl that NEGATES Werdum's strenghts. So all he does is lay in the ground and asks "Overeem please come over here because I can't put you down!"..LOL! The reason he'd rather stay laying on the ground is because he failed to create a grappling situation but doesn't want to stand a trade..
SO WHO FAILED?
I hope Antonio Silva has the nerves to bang with Overeem.. Yhen we'd see how it goes!

big foot will beat alistair overatted..
Oh boy here comes the overrated jokes *facepalm*
You absolutely cannot call what Werdum did "forcing his game". I would call it begging Overeem to enter into his game. Overeem refused, and when he tried to force his own game, Werdum flopped and began begging.
I don't know about you, but I wanted to see a fighter, not a beggar.
"overeem won cuz standup is cooler" lol
werdum couldt get overeem to the ground but still did more than over reem when they were standing, werdum took the fight to him, knees punshes kicks, i remember lots of werdum but i dont rember anything overeem did on his feet
@Diamond, your spot on. I personally have it a draw. Werdum actually lost the fight himself by pulling guard way too much. The Reem was happy to LET Werdum get off in the clinch because he had no other way to get Werdum to trade with him. So Werdum actually landed more strikes in all three rounds, BUT despite the fact he had more success in the clinch, he was still scared of Overeem striking and kept pulling guard in such a pathetic way on a constant basis and allowing The Reem to have top control is what cost him the fight. Nothing The Reem did of his own accord actually won him the fight. They say it takes two to tango but Werdum ruined that fight imo, he was landing more strikes but still decided to pull guard he's a PUSSY imo, not because he respected The Reems striking but because hewas actually landing more shots and TOTALLY ignored the fact he could actually win that way. PUSSY
wow, this fight was terrible....These guys should be praying that UFC doesn't join the heavyweight division because they would get destroyed by any top five contender in the UFC. I can see Roy Nelson beating up both of these guys, hahahha
Overeem was barely taking any hard shots from werdum and kept covering up with his hands, no circular movement around the cage or anything, lol. Both of you guys should be embarrass
The fight starts in the stand up for a reason and if you aren't able to take it to the ground you'll have to fight standing, simple as that! I just wanna quote: "Milton Vieira: BJJ is not effective unless you can take down your opponent (Exclusive Interview)" better should have read that mr. Verdum
Nice sprawls by Overeem though!
I didn't see how Overeem won this one. I'm sorry but he was taken out of his standup game and he didn't know what to do. Yes Werdum wanted to fight on the ground and to the point where I felt awkward for him. But that said in my personal opinion Overeem was seriously below par and werdum did stand and play the stand up game, even if it was to set up the guard game.
All in all I think that Overeem lost this but I'm not a judge on this and I think Overeem lost more by fighting this god aweful fight and not trying to show his other skills. Was it because his only got one string?
The other fights where good.
You cant win a fight falling on your back for the best part of 3 rounds. Reem did not do much to win the fight, Werdum did alot to lose it.
i agree with overeem that werdums performance was disgraceful, but he says hes disapionted in how little werdum stood up with him, i disagree wit that. werdum was actually outstriking overreem most of the fight, if he had any power in his hands or knees he could of maybe finished overreem. why is it that the person who sucks at striking always lets their hands go and the person whos an amazing striker is always tenative and gunshy?
PRIDE rules would have fixed this fight. If Overeem had soccer kicks or stomps available, then Werdum wouldn't have been able to lay on his back like a bitch.
yeah soccer kicks would have done it but I blame the ref too for not warning him.
HOW CAN YOU BE THE BEST STRIKER AND NOT KO WERDUM?????
because Werdum kept dropping to the floor and stalling?
"best striker in mma"? did he really say that?
IMO werdum's stand up was better than overeems..well if he wasn't sitting on the floor begging overeem to get involved in his gameplan. even though werdum might have taken more damage I think the result should have been closer because he landed more strikes. his combinations looked pretty fu**ckin good.
This is just proof of each fighter being one dimensional for the most part, and the fact that someone like Cain would destroy either one of them.
It's amazing how a much once opinion of a fighter can change in one fight, not only did Werdum look bad and put on a pathetic performance (I want judges to stop fights or at least take points away when this shit happens) but now we can really put the Fedor fight down to pure luck.
If Werdum has to "trick" his opponents to win then he is in big trouble as a fighter, after this fight Werdum doesn't just drop of my top 5 by probably my top 10.
