Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz has been pitted against Brazilian slugger Evangelista ''Cyborg'' Santos, in a championship bout for Strikeforce's January 29th event in San Jose, California. According to sources close to the situation, both fighters have agreed verbally on the fight, and are expected to put pen to paper in the coming days.

Nick Diaz had been rumoured to take on Jason ''Mayhem'' Miller, but both camps could not agree on a suitable weight for the bout to take place, dashing any hopes some may of had to of seen these two square off. Cyborg Santos is currently 1-1 in his Strikeforce campaign, defeating Marius Zaromskis at Strikeforce: Los Angeles.

The welterweight title collision is expected to serve as the Main Event, and will be televised on Showtime.Middleweight title encounter between Champ Jacare Souza and Robbie Lawler will also feature on the card, and a further two bouts have also been confirmed with Herschel Walker taking on Scott Carson, as Roger Gracie will face South African vet Trevor Prangley. There will be only four televised bouts on Showtime, due to two of them being title fights.

I think this fight is going to be similar to the Diaz/Zaromskis...Diaz is going to outstrike him n then most likely end it via sub on the ground

how can anyone complain about the fight!

this is a great fight! Cyborg KO marious! and so did Diaz!

both like to stand and bang!

besides after this Diaz will still have Daley to fight next year, do you think strikeforce is going to make that fight in the beginning of the year ? the card is going to kick ass!

Why do people want to see Daley vs Diaz so bad?

    Just watch Daley vs Shields.

Daley has still done nothing to show any wrestling or ground game. He's not going to land the left hook on a smart fighter like Diaz. He'll get subbed within the first 2 minutes.

true but there has to be some structure and logic to the matchups. this isn't the wwe and just for entertainment. it's a sport and it diminishes the integrity of SF and looks very unprofessional when they make fights like this that are complete mismatches. the only welterweight that should be fighting diaz for the belt is daley.

many people said fedor fighting Werdum was a joke and a mismatch and look what happened.

Dana said the other day something whci I actually agreed with. you can't call a fight for sure until it's happened. No matter what you may think anything can happen. Most of us are guilty of predicting outcomes, but complaining about a fight is pointless, because you are still gonna watch it, and then maybe bitch a bit more after as well.

Yeah, agree with the posts above, Cyborg is 1-1, has a "crappy" MMA record and gets a tittle shot... Thats why Strikeforce tittles mean so little to everyone, thats no way to get a promotion in the top ranks of MMA, it only makes SF look like a small organization whos only interest is to put up fight shows.

For all of Scott Cookers rhetoric, he doesnt know much about MMA as sport, he may know about promotion of events but he knows little about ranks and thats what makes a sport respectable...

Just saying the UFC gives title shots to those with less than stellar records also. Strikeforce gets loads of hate from many quarters, but the same idiots will be glued to the TV or laptop to watch the fights they complain about. I do think Daley was the logical choice, but so what, their styles make for a good fight.

the last show went right at the same time as the ufc and what happend. you think steffan bonnar is a main event. the guy he fought, will we ever hear from him again. i think you got it wrong. the ufc has great fighters, but shitty matchups. strikeforce is about excitment. no bullshit striker vs. grappler hear. these two will beat on each other, not lay on the ground and wait for the clock to run out like the ufc.

Hey, dumbass: that was a quasi-UFC-event. That's a third-tier UFC event, not even a fight night and CERTAINLY not a numbered event. It was the season finale for TUF and basically just an advertising platform for the following weekend's epic card. Look at it as more of an extended preliminary portion.

Strikeforce pulled out all their big guns, put on possibly the most star-studded show in the promotion's history.... and still pulled less than a quarter of the viewers that third-teir UFC event did.

There's no defending this fight. It's a stupid matchup (it'll be a fun fight to watch, I'm not denying that) and Strikeforce makes a mockery of its titles by putting together stupid matchups like this. This is almost as bad as Rogers-Overeem.

this is stupid. they should of given daley to diaz. at least that would be a better fight. diaz is going to destroy cyborg. or do cyborg v. daley and let them fight for number 1 contender. SF matchups are just stupid.

I thought for sure they would do Daley vs Cyborg so Daley could get another vicious KO before he fought Diaz. Diaz could have gone up and fought mayhem then came back and defended the belt. No disrepect to Cybrog but this is why SF belts are a joke. They have a REALLY competitive roster, they just need to make the right matchups.

you must all be ufc fans. strikeforce want exciting fights, not guys that are over ranked laying on each other. cyborg has had a long career and is a formidable opponent for anyone. no chute boxe fighter is easy and if you get caught slippin, they will give you the ass kickin of your life and embarass you. cyborg did knock out zaromski his last fight and has a strong resume of opponents. this will be a more exiting fight than that jabfest we saw gsp do. nick will show up to bang and so will cyborg. so you ufc fans can keep watching two guys humping each other. the real mma fans will definatly enjoy this. and i will be in the arena enjoying it. go nick diaz.

    Not exactly stellar.

Real MMA fans? As in Mixed Martial Arts? As in Not Just Kick Boxing? That dry humping is called grappling, or did you not get the memo?

Yeah, I'm sure it will be an "exciting slug fest". But it's hardly title fight material.

I for one am starting to get annoyed with everyone bitching about wrestlers dominating the sport. Remember that Royce Gracie guy and his wacky Jiu Jitsu stuff? I dont remeber anyone complaining about BJJ dominating. Everyone just learned how to do it so they could counter it. It's called evolution. Sooner or later, the wrestlers will not be able to dominate so freely as more people will hone their grappling skills. Knock outs will never go out of fashion. If you honestly think that "real MMA fans" dont watch the UFC, then you're just completely out of touch. The UFC is still the top of the heap. Nobody dreams about being the Strikeforce champ, it's a consolation prize for those who havent made it all the way or wont play ball with Dana.

Nick Diaz is cleaning out his division at SF because he is a UFC caliber fighter. Same thing will prob happen with Daley. SF's roster is just not strong enough to put on consecutive quality cards.

You make some good points but records aren't everything. Randy Couture's record doesn't look much different. Also, I know MMAth insn't this clear cut but Cyborg made quicker work of Zaromskis than Diaz did. Nick is clearly the more accomplished and, in my opinion, better fighter but all Cyborg needs is one clean right and it is good night Nicky. All in all, my bet is on Nick winning too but you never know.
