Nick Diaz pens new deal with Strikeforce
Posted on December 29, 2010, 07:30 AM by Daniel CassidyIn exciting news for Strikeforce, current Welterweight Champion for the California based promotion Nick Diaz has signed a fresh deal with them. The 23-7-0-1 Stockton native agreed a multi year deal with Scott Coker's team, and was quick to speak about his excitement.
"I'm looking forward to continuing my career with STRIKEFORCE," said the 27-year-old Diaz, a protégé of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Cesar Gracie and resident of Stockton, Calif. "When I first got here, there weren't a lot of great 170 pound fighters for me to fight, but that's definitely changed. There's a lot of really good fighters in the division now and I'm ready to fight anyone who thinks they can beat me."
Diaz is the current Champ at 170lbs in Strikeforce, and is so far the only Champ the company have had at that weight. Currently on an 8 fight win streak, Diaz seems untouchable. Winning the belt back in January of 2009, Diaz already has his first title defence of 2011 planned, with Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos stepping up to the plate on 29th of January at Strikeforce: Diaz vs Cyborg.
Since initially parting ways with the UFC in 2006 following 3 straight losses, Diaz has only been beaten once (a TKO due to cuts vs KJ Noons). Winning 11 fights (plus one win against Takanori Gomi, later overturned to a no contest) Diaz has seemed intent to prove himself amongst the best in the world, beating the best at 170lbs that Strikeforce has to offer.

he doesn't want to beat gsp that bad, than.
thats 'cause he apparently gave his head a shake and came back to reality!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! He wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of touching Georges!
So please fill me in on the UFC's offer you moron. On that note we dont see GSP leaving his money to go to strikeforce either.
Please it would be a close fight. He has George standing and on the ground. George would win but only by lay and prey.
If anyone thinks they can beat GSP its Diaz. Plus seeing GSP only take him down with wrestling doesnt excite me either because he wouldnt win the striking game against Nick and thats the truth. Diaz would capitalize on reach and fk him up. GSP could only win by points and take downs if he did win. You might even see GSP get subbed after 3 rounds.
Diaz is a beast hes gotta be one of the tuffest guys to fight against in MMA, him vs st.piere would be a close fight for sure
On the ground, yes, but standing? I don't think so. GSP's karate stance and his athleticism are tough to deal with even for the best striker.
exactly movescamp
hiding from GSP but thats the smart move losing would only damage his career and he would
ill say it again....he cant be hiding if the UFC doesnt want to see their top guys beat by a guy who Dana bashes...is your head out of your butt now?
GSP would beat Diaz standing or on the ground, end of story
There is no story, because there is no fight story teller
would have loved him to come back to UFC... alot more
big fights at 170.
I do think he has as good of chance as anyone else against GSP.
"There's a lot of really good fighters in the division now and I'm ready to fight anyone who thinks they can beat me"
...so you're fighting santos?
Ducking GSP!!! Naw jk lol
Smart move on Diaz' part. He is the champ and the money is probably good, so why not sign a new deal? Ducking GSP my A**, there will be plenty of time to face him later on, plus he's got a career to think about.
Mustn't be that intent on proving that he's the best, considering he's the only welterweight in Strikeforce who's close to top-ten contention. (Don't anyone dare mention Daley, he is not top ten and can't be with everything his game is missing.)
This is another Mousasi deal, homie likes to be a big fish in a small pond instead of going somewhere he'd have a tougher time and actually have a few guys who are better than him. But also having said that, Coker lets Nick get away with so much more than Dana and the UFC would. Dana has even said, even very recently, that he likes Nick Diaz, thinks he's an awesome fighter but it's his attitude and image he needs to clean up before the UFC would have him. Nick just likes his blunts, leave the kid alone.
And dude, fight Miller already, especially that he's probably on his way out of Strikeforce shortly, and there's not really anyone else to fight.
You are such a ufc nut hugger. There are great fighters everywhere. The ufc has become a joke. They only have the best marketing.
I'm a UFC nuthugger? No, I am realistic. You are a blatent, blind and obviously ignorant anti-UFC warrior. You are the MMA equivalent to those kids in high school who only listened to music from bands no one else had heard of. If you'd heard of them, they were sellouts and sucked.
Please, oh great and wise movescamp, tell me what other organisation has a list of welterweights as thick as Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, Josh Koscheck, Carlos Condit, Dan Hardy, Martin Kampmann, Jake Shields, Chris Lytle, BJ Penn, Georges St Pierre, Ricardo Almeida, should I continue? Yeah that list looks like a real "joke". Actually I'll let you put together the rosters of every other organisation in the world that isn't the UFC and I'm telling you now, don't waste your time. You're not going to be able to compile a list a tenth the size or depth.
I am not a nuthugger. I look at where the competition is and what I see is that the UFC, in spite of how "mainstream" or what "sellouts" they are, has the biggest and thickest roster of any organisation in the world, consistently puts on the most fights, consistently puts on the best fights, pays its fighters better than anyone else and always gives back to the fans whenever they can. Of course they aren't the model business, but they are a business at the end of the day and you can't fault them for doing what works. There is a lot of room for improvement, I'm by no means saying they're doing it perfectly - there's room to pay better, room to make more improvements in matchmaking and following the logical course - but they're the top level at this point and they are where the best guys should be fighting.
Nick Diaz is top five welterweights in the world in my book and there's no one else in the top ten or fifteen outside of the UFC. Tell me who all these people are in Strikeforce who are at Diaz's level and I'll hug all the Coker nuts you want me to.
yes your a UFC nut hugging ball gurgler
bro. you just got owned...ahaha
That was a good post! funny and intelligent..it is funny how one can say something good about the UFC and people automatically dismiss it, let their emotions get in the way. Like it or not its most fighters dream to make it to the UFC, giving them the edge on elite talent. Plus you could tell alot about the organiztions talent by looking at their champions. I dont see another organizations champions better than what the UFC has. although Melendez vs edgar would be fun to watch, and although JDS isnt the champ yet, him vs the reem would be an amazing fight! and one last thought about Diaz though alot of people dont like him, youve never seen him get knocked out or subbed, fighting for as long as he has thats pretty impressive.
As large as the UFC is and seeing better shows from Strikeforce lately???
For the size and the shows put on, Ill take Strikeforce for P4P since the UFC is the biggest org around I expect better and Strikeforce is the better show for my dollar......but most pirate the crap to start with. This isnt about hugging Coker's nuts as George brought into his book long rant. Also its a good thing the other fighters cant fight UFC fighters huh? That way you have something to fill your void in arguements.
and 707 yea, I guess thats funny and intelligent to a guy who also gurgles UFC nuts like you.
I don't see too many good fights for him at welterweight in SF, unless he moves up to 185.
I think GSP is ducking Diaz. He should fight in Strikeforce. He's gotta prove he's the best, blah blah blah blah. Not as funny when the shoe is on the other foot eh?
What?! nobody gets irony on the internets?
Scott Coker must have made him a deal stay in SF and smoke all the weed you want. But seriously i think hes staying cuz he doenst want to be in the mix with Sheilds who is fighting GSP and his brother who is climbing up the ladder
There has to be a UFC offer first and I think if there was, he would go and fight where his homies are. Nicks not that old and will continue being a beast in any division
yeah you're probably right but the UFC would be stupid to not try to sign him soon GSP is running out of fights
I see now since he avenged his loss to KJ Noons that everyone's only come back is saying hes ducking GSP, fking morons
I concur.
Maybe he's great full to Scott for giving him an opportunity? Maybe loyalty to his promotion? If everybody started to jump ship once they are champs Strikeforce wouldn't get much momentum, once their champions stick around it increases the value of Strikeforce. To me what Diaz is doing is a very smart move for Strikeforce and himself.
To people saying he's ducking GSP, i'm sure Scott would be willing to set up that fight no problem. Tisk tisk, Dana won't.
I concur.
I am pretty sure that he has a championship clause in his contract. That would mean that he really didn't have a choice about signing because his contract would automatically renew. He probably just renegotiated.
Awesome news.
