Josh Thomson defeats JZ Calvacante via Unanimous DecisionPosted on October 9, 2010, 10:30 PM by Anton Gurevich
The fight between Josh Thomson and JZ Calvacante truly lived up to the expectations. After three entertaining rounds of striking and an impressive ground game, former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson had his hand raised, scoring a valuable victory over the top Lightweight in JZ Calvacante.
Both fighters had their chances during the fight. JZ was the first to test his opponent, locking a tight Guillotine Choke, forcing Thomson to look for a tap out at one point. But Thomson managed to survive, before unleashing submission attempts of his own later in the fight. In general, Thomson displayed a better ground game and managed to keep JZ off his distance, to score a well deserved Unanimous Decision victory.
Thomson called out the reigning Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendezm who probably will not face the Bellator Champion Eddie Alvarez. Josh Thomson improved his MMA record to 18-3, losing only to Gilbert Melendez, Clay Guida and Yves Edwards in his career.
