while i believe that gil is often overlooked he is by no means the number 1 lw top five for sure but he would have to fight some better guys to be number 1

He needs to go looking for fights against top 10 guys like Alvarez, Kawajiri or even Aoki again to really stake a claim for the number 1 spot. Edgar on the other hand is current champ of a stacked UFC 155 div. and is going to keep on getting fed one top 5er after another if he can retain his belt.

Yea beating Shinya Aoki doesnt make u by far the num 1 LW in the world.... I think Frankie is right now unless you want to say Gray is cuz i just cant see Eddie or Gilbert beating either one of them.

i agree, beating Aoki doesn't prove you are #1 but he had a great fight shutting down a submission expert. Frankie might be # 1 right now, but think it's more believable than you think that Gil or Eddie can beat those 2. Granted they are both good wrestlers, Eddie is huge that class and can KO anyone and Gil is a warrior - if those two matchups were a Semi-final bracket, I bet Gil or Eddie would be in the final, and wouldnt be that surprised to see both. This might be the UFC bias in my opinion

According to me the best lightweight is BJ penn, no one can take his place not even Frankie. He will be champ once again at 155 mark my words :)

Yes BJ is a legend but he has it all to prove again after two poor performances against Frankie would love to see him KO Fitch

He has a good a claim as Edgar?? Frankie shut down BJ Penn twice, a fighter people at the time were talking about being p4p king, lots of people even ranking him higher than AS because of the competition he faced.

What the **** has Gil done? Beaten Aoki, and in a cage? First off, I think in a ring that fight takes a hugely different direction, Aoki would sub him on a mat or in a ring. Second, that is exactly ONE top-ten ranked opponent he has on his resume, a resume that is full of lackluster decisions over mediocre competition. Josh Thompson (ranked about 15th right now by my count) is the only other name of note who he's fought in the last five years, and they're 1-1. And one split over Clay Guida, before Clay knew how to punch.

Yeah, definitely ranked higher than BJ Penn (Florian, Stevenson, Sherk, Sanchez), Edgar (BJ twice, Sherk, I think Gray), and Maynard (Siver, Edgar, Clementi, Miller, Huerta, Diaz, Kenflo, and some people say Edgar.)

Shut up Gil, grow up and fight for a big boy league, maybe fight someone who matters and then start running your mouth. Nice enough guy, family man and a great representative of the sport but he's ****ing delusional.

The only guy Edgar has beaten that is really all that higher up than the guys Glbert has fought is BJ and even that is arguable at this point.Gilbert has shown the same skill level with the exception of foot work and has beaten Aoki, who has beaten everyone that counts outside the UFC and Thompson and if he beats Kawajiri then that is maybe a better claim than Edgar. You seem to think that being in the UFC makes someone tops. Who the hell is Clementi, really? Huerta has lost to every top opponent he has faced. Stevenson is a can. Guida still can't punch by the way but he is also and was also a TOUGH fight.

Theres just soooo may LW's out there that have skills. It is really the most stacked division in all of MMA. Too bad we couldn't have a 4 person tourney w/ Pettis, Edgar, Mendez, and Alverez now that would be sick.

Maynard Edgar II was fight of the night and fight of the year so far. If you dont wanna watch someone of Maynards ability fight the best in the world you are a strange person and not a true fan IMO.

Before that fight many so called fans were trolling mma sites moaning about what a boring fight we were going to witness completely devoid of the brain cells equipped with the knowledge of how talented these fighters really are. I am happy to say they were all shown to be the meatheads they are, please learn from their mistakes before dismissing fighters of this calibre. They are awesome, Maynard included!!

Notice how vague the vague the list he gives is? What champions? What "undefeated guys"? Gil is good, but his resume simply cannot be compared to UFC title holders/contenders.

If he really wants to "suck it up and go for it", then he should get out of the minor leagues (argue all you want, but the SF 155 div. is 2nd tier). It is obvious he stays there for the money (no problem with that) and lack of world class competition, which ensures he keeps his money. Hardly "sucking it up" and far from a "people's champ."

He is better off in strikeforce and with so many top fighters all vying for a shot at the UFC belt it could be a long road to a title shot in the UFC maybe years, maybe never.
