Fabricio Werdum wants one more fight before he returns to Strikeforce

“I used this trip to make a couple of good contacts in Abu Dhabi and Japan. Strikeforce want me to return in March against Fedor [Emelianenko] or [Alistair] Overeem, but I’m looking forward to having a fight before that one. I don’t have an exclusive contract with Strikeforce, only for the U.S., and I got a nice proposal in Abu Dhabi and another one in Japan.”

“I’ve got my last professional commitment in New York. By next week, I’ll be back helping ‘Babalu’ and Fernando Bettega who will fight for Strikeforce on Dec. 4. My arm is 100 percent now and I feel that by February, I’ll be ready to fight in Abu Dhabi or Japan.”

Since shocking the world last July by submitting Fedor Emilianenko, Fabricio Werdum took time off to get long over due elbow surgery. Now fully fit and healthy, "Vai Cavalo" has his sights set firmly on a return to action. With Strikeforce looking to pair him up against either current Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem or a rematch against "The Last Emperor". Despite this, Werdum now admits he wants a fight in either Abu Daba or Japan before his US return.

Werdum is currently 14-4-1 in his MMA career. The BJJ ace is one of the most decorated grapplers to fight inside a cage. Since signing with Strikeforce, he has defeated Mike Kyle, "Big Foot" Silva and Emilianenko. The former UFC fighter has gone 5-1 in his last 6 fights. His most noteble wins include Alistair Overeem, Gabriel Gonzaga, Alexsander Emilianenko and of course, Fedor.

The current depth of the Strikeforce Heavyweight division is huge, with more top Heavyweights than ever. Following the signing of Josh Barnett and Sergei Kharintov, all eyes are looking to see who Scott Coker and co. will match up next.

So Lowkick'ers, who would you like to see fight for the Strikeforce Heavyweight title next? and who should next face Fedor Emilianenko?

Werdum should go and fight Fedor or Overeem already, hopefully its Overeem cause I would like to see that fight and have Fedor fight some one like Big Foot and the winner fights the winner of Overeem and Werdum, I think that makes the most sense

is that the wamma bet hes reaching for in the picture? lol what a joke that is, and as for werdum it doesnt matter whether he fights fedor or overeem next, he will be smashed by both of them...the only reason he submitted fedor is cos fedor fell into his trap and jumped the gun...if they fight again when fedor knocks him down, hes just gonna wait for werdum to stand up, and the same goes for overeem

Werdum is obviously trying to capitalize on his fluke win over Fedor by getting fights outside the Strikeforce and doing conferences. Sooner or later, though, he'll have to face either the Reem or Fedor. He's knows well --as we all do-- that his next fight with either won't be an easy one and that there is a good chance they'll beat him this time around.

Dana's insistence on exclusive contracts for his fighters is for good reasons, after all. If every fighter does what he wants, we'll probably be deprived of all the great match-ups in the UFC. Let's hope Scott follows suit and finds a way to arrange the fights we all want to see, and not just wait in uncertainty for something to happen in a vague future...

dude c'mon now!! what's wrong with fighters fighting outside the promotion??? why we fans are so selfish. those guys shed their blood and sacrifice a lot and they deserve to be get paid. end of the day it is business as well and it should not be one sided. that's not fair. i think strikeforce's business model is really good that is why they have managed to stay afloat and 18 months into the business and they already have a some great fighters and arguably best HWD.

fighters deserve to be get paid well end of the story. if a promotion cant pay them enough then they should be allowed to fight else where as well. putting together a fight is promotions headache but nothing is perfect. imagine, this year if Werdum fights overeem/fedor and then Fedor fights overeem and barnett. barnett fights werdum or overeem and big foot fights barnett, would you still compain?? and trust me these fights are very much possible and I believe we will see these fights this year and some PPVs from strikeforce.

let me give you an example, if im a doing a 9-5 job and not earning enough money i have the right to do a second part time job or weekend job to survive and feed my family, right? imagine if my full time employer gets me into exclusive contract saying i cant work anywhere else at all, he still pays me the same but im not chocked financially. this is exactly what is happening to me at this point. i work for a leading IT vendor and have an exclusive contract that i cant work for any competitor, result- i cant work anywhr else at all cuz any IT company is my empoyers competitor. i still get paid the same but i desperately need a second job to survive and I am planning to leave my job and go somewhr else where I have the flexibility. I think I can understand what strikeforce is offering to their fighters, it is necessary. I respect scott coker for that. all these idiotic fans who think they are some " business ananlysts" and in real life wouldnt be able to run a small company, can say whatever they want to say but the fact remains. fighters are human beings, they have families, we are not living in 1800 century where gladiators were slaves.

bro, think from fighter and fans perspective..

what about K-1 fans??? i bet they are as eager to see him in K-1. What about Overeem's dream?? winning K-1 is his dream as stated by him. he has put in years of preparation and came so close last year. he wants to WIN k-1 belt. Dutch ppl prefer kickboxing over anything, his whole team- golden glory is of kickboxers. y wouldnt he do kick boxing ?? y wouldnt he do k-1. if strikeforce demands exclusive contract he might not do MMA at all. so you might not see him in MMA at all. Kudos to strikeforce for letting AO fight in K-1 cos i like watching it as much as i like MMA. as I said if your dreams are important to you if your freedom is important to you so is fighters freedom and dreams.

Well... Now its a bit hard to deny that Werdum is avoiding the Strikeforce elite. You do not take out the #1 Heavyweight in the world and then go looking for a tune-up fight in Japan. I don't get what some of these guys or maybe their managers are thinking sometimes. Werdum's stock is sky-high, but his time away hasn't helped maintain that status much and then suppose he loses to an unranked opponent overseas...

i think mabey hes thinking that by fighting a no name overseas it will be an easy win a a good warm up fight to get ring rust off before jumping right back into deep water. if so that could either be very strategic or foolish.

Hahaha, Werdum is enjoying life after beating Fedor as much as he can, he prolly does not think he will win a rematch so he is just making excuse to avoid Fedor or the Reem...

    @T666

Overeem had already confirmed his K1 participation BEFORE FEdor challenged him. AND he had challenged Fedor before that various times, that Fedor challenges him when everybody already KNOWS that he is going to compete in the K1 finals is a little suspect...

thats the problem guys wake TF up. The org promoter and his team should be deciding the fights, not the fighters managers who bounce all over the place.

Werdum should fight Overeem because Overeem has the belt. It wouldn't make sense to be in Werdum's shoes and turn down a title shot. Fedor could fight the winner of that match.

Honestly this doesn't bother me that much. Werdum might want to shake some rust off before going in against Overeem OR Fedor. The guy has been out of action for months, so it wouldn't surprise me. As for his return to SF, he'll get one of those two guys and be a good matchup for them. I don't think the Fedor thing was a fluke, Werdum is one of the world's best grapplers. If they have a rematch, I think Fedor will be more cautious, but I still wouldn't be against Werdum

I have no problem with him having a tune up fight. Only problem, if he loses, the HW's all jacked up. And do you really think Fedor will be more cautions? Of course not, he'll jump into Werdums guard again and rain down punches. It why we love him, the guy just goes for it. Plus he has been training a with Souza so that will help a lot, there are not that many triangle chokes in combat sambo, so if he actually trains with somebody like Souza we know he'll be ready.
