Daniel Cormier considers his next move while on the shelfPosted on May 28, 2012, 12:00 PM by Mike Drahota
Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier is currently on the injured list, facing a medical suspension of six months unless cleared by a doctor. Having broke his right hand for the third time in under a year, Cormier is set to have surgery and get back in the cage this fall. His next opponent is completely up in the air at this point, as Cormier and Grand Prix final opponent Josh Barnett are the only Heavyweights sitting on the Strikeforce roster. Still, Cormier fights through the uncertainty of his injuries and fight plans with a steel resolve. Winning the tournament as an alternate has gained him many accolades and quick recognition. He recently commented about the direction of his short but very promising MMA career:
"I didn't know if I could do it; I'm not going to lie. But once I got in the tournament, I had to believe in myself. It's been a crazy ride for a year and two months." - via MMAJunkie.com
When asked about his next opponent, Cormier responded:
"This is the biggest problem. I don't know how they're going to convince someone to do it. It's going to have to be someone from the outside."
Just who would come over to Strikeforce for their final Heavyweight bout versus Cormier is completely up in the air right now. Cormier himself threw out some names, saying he would like to fight the heavy-handed Sergei Kharitonov:
"I saw him walk down Overeem and slump him over the ring ropes. That would be a great fight. I would fight Kharitonov."
He also was open to the possibility of fighting former UFC Heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, noting that beating any former champion is an accomplishment in and of itself. With many pushing for Cormier to fight in the UFC, even for the title, fans will have to wait and see what happens in his last Strikeforce bout. At this point in time, the sky is the limit for the talented wrestler and he will no doubt face the best in the UFC. The question is, when?
