Daniel Cormier: I fight at Heavyweight, because guys at 205 are better

It's better for me not to cut weight. But with some changes in my diet, it would be pretty simple. When I'm training normally at the gym, I weight around 230, 232 pounds. There's no reason for me to cut that weight. And to be totally honest with you, guys are better at 205. They're faster. These are just big lumbering guys. So hopefully when my skill set allows me to fight at that weight class, and if my management thinks I should go down – that's what I'll do.

Speaking to MMAFighting's Ariel Helwani, Daniel Cormier gave a honest answer on why he is not fighting at what seems his natural weight class. Although Cormier weighed a HW-worthy 249 pounds for his bout against Jason Riley, but at 5 ft 10.5 in tall he's definitely undersized for a Heavyweight. So what do you think LowKick'ers, what should be Daniel Cormier's permanent weight class?

smart thinking by Cormier, he wants to stick to something he knows but i do see him doing well at LH if he could make the weight. For the moment though i think he should stick to heavyweight and see how thats goes before he moves down. I think Strikeforce would prefer Cormier to move down because there is limited top competition at LH for champ (apart from Sobral, Hendo and a rematch with King Mo)

He can get away with this in SF being 240ish and not well toned. as long as he stays in SF he can have some sucess with the strategy.

He is a solid wrestler, but he does belong at light heavyweight. Not just because of his height, although that is one reason, but also because he does not appear to be in optimal condition. I cannot imagine that the cut would be to much of an issue for him. 205 is clearly closer to his natural weight.

Fedor is the most successful heavyweight ever by a long way and has always had a spare tyre accompany him around the world. Nelson has a proper belly and he has some success also though nowhere near Fedors.

But still the most successful HW that ever lived. And Pride HW division was much better than UFC when he was champ there.

Lesnar is champ of the biggest org now and look how bad he was against a good boxer. He only won cos there #1 contender couldnt fight beyond 3 qand half minutes otherwise he'd have finished Lesnar.

those smaller, faster guys have always had most success in the HWs fedor, cain, cormier, etc.

Hah... Good luck with that theory buddy. Choosing to be a small HW, with crocodiles like Lesnar and Carwin and JDS and Cain who will toy with him. Looks to me like he fights at HW because he's out of shape.
