Top MMA coach Cesar Gracie, of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Pleasant Hill, California, discusses his star pupils Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez, as well as former UFC Middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen.  Gracie explains how the Diaz vs. Georges St. Pierre fight came together and says that Melendez is currently working on a similar deal for himself.

After successfully defending the Strikeforce Welterweight title on three occasions, Nick Diaz recently vacated the throne in favor of signing on to challenge UFC 170-pound Champion Georges St. Pierre.  While not yet official, GSP vs. Diaz is expected to headline UFC 137 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

You don't see him "making it"???

Exactly how do you define "making it"? The guy has a legitimate shot at the title, and even if he doesn't win that, he will most definitely be a top 10 LW in the UFC for years... If you don't believe that you are beyond delusional.

How am i beyond delusional? Because he hasnt beatin a top 10 opponent since Aoki who was HIGHLY overrated might i add? Gil is overrated... I bet Guida would beat him now. To many GREAT light weights in the UFC for someone who has beatin nobody that is worth mentioning other then Guida a good 5 years ago!

Did i mention Diaz hasnt fought a GREAT wrestler since Sean Sherk a LOOONG time ago? Dont get me started on Nate Diaz..., Sheilds dominated by GSP, and could barely win his "welcome to the UFC fight", I have a valid point here i guess u just gotta look past ur bias a little bit just a tad.

With Pettis out of the title picture i think Gilbert would be the best choice to fight the winner of Frankie vs Gray (Frankie Edgar).

Then the Winner of Ben Henderson and Miller( Bendo) will stand as the No.1 Contender waiting for the then current Champion!

Don't be so sure. I think Melendez should fight Clay Guida (he is currently the #1 contender) or wait for Maynard/Edgar vs. Guida -- which could take awhile.

Diaz is going to get raped.

GSP was a bad match up for Diaz this early.

Diaz has the potential to beat GSP but the truth is I don't want to see him champion. His constant bitching about how "he doesn't get paid enough" and his endless smack-talk hurts mixed martial artists everywhere. Plain and simple, I don't like the Diaz brothers, even though I have to admit, Nick has talent.

I think Greg Jackson will bring an excellent strategy, GSP will injure some part of his body midway through the fight and Jackson will tell him to suck it up, Nick will get cut, GSP will eek out a decision and walk up to Middleweight where Anderson will be waiting for him. This is all just speculation though.

Oh and Melendez? I've been waiting to see him in the UFC for awhile. I'd love to see him take on Guida.

Should Nick get a title shot in his first outing in the UFC? Personally I think he should have a warm up fight first preferably a UFC veteran. I mean his team mate Shields struggled against Kampmann then lose to GSP so it is in Nick's best interest to warm up and win convincingly before he takes on GSP.

The reason why they aren't giving Diaz a warm up fight is because it would have to do be against someone GSP has totally dominated.

Then, if Diaz loses, say bye bye to a contender and a good sell for a title fight.

I'll put this another way, for all the people who don't appreciate GSP. Diaz doesn't need a warm up fight. His chances are the same, if not better, if he fights GSP right away.

exactly it's all about selling the show nick has a lot of hype on him right now. he hasnt fought a top guy in a long while but he has a belt and a polarizing personality not to mention he puts on a great fight. there is a high probability that nick would lose to any top 5 guy in the ufc and miss out on one of the biggest paydays of the year
