Babalu Sobral dominates Robbie Lawler for a Unanimous Decision victory
Posted on June 16, 2010, 11:42 PM by Anton GurevichFormer Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Babalu Sobral and the former Elite XC Middleweight King Robbie Lawler squared off in a headlining action at Strikeforce: Los Angeles. Sobral entered the cage after a year-long layoff, with a mission to climb his way back to the top of the Strikeforce LHW ranks.
In the First Round, Renato Sobral displayed a very effective strategy of ‘modern mma’, working his way by clinching at the fence and using dirty boxing. Lawler managed to shake off Sobral’s takedown attempts, displaying improved wrestling skills. Lawler delivered most of the damage in the first round of the fight, punishing Sobral on his feet.
Second round was a quite different story. Robbie Lawler did not look as aggressive as he was in the first round on his feet, allowing Babalu to completely control the pace. Sobral unleashed his fury with kicks and striking combos, dominating Robbie Lawler at his own game.
Robbie Lawler was a little bit more serious in the third round, possibly knowing that he has to deliver a knockout if he wants to live the Nokia Theatre victorious. “Ruthless” Lawler came out guns blazing against Sobral, rocking the Brazilian several times in the process. But despite being rocked, Sobral managed to keep his distance and respond with striking combo’s of his own.
At the end, Renato “Babalu” Sobral won a well-earned Unanimous Decision, getting a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 victory on the judges’ scorecards. Renato Sobral improves his record to 36-8, successfully bouncing back from a defeat against Gegard Mousasi.

Great! Babalu is on his way!
yea, but it wasnt a dominating victory. I agree he won, and im a babalu fan, but it was a close good fight. I think he won the first and second, and lost the last round.
All of the judges did give Robbie a round hence 29-28
Dude just so you know, a unanimous decision isn't winning all 3 rounds, or 5 rounds pending if it is a title fight or not. A unanimous decision is when all 3 judges agree that the fighter, in this case Babalu, won 2 out of the 3 rounds, which overall means he wins the fight. If a judge were to got 30-29 Lawler, and the other 2, 30-29 Babalu, that would be a split decision, but when all judges agree that the winning fighter won 2 or more rounds, it is a unanimous decision, just so you know for future reference.
oops, typo, "were to GIVE"
I thought the fight was judged perfectly.... (For a change)
Yeah i had it 2 rounds to 1, Babalu.
Babalu made my night. I really wanted to see Lawler lose once again. Great fight Babalu.
I wouldn't say he dominated
I would agree- it was a close fight- Babalu did just enough to win the first two rounds and avoid getting KO'd in the final round. Miletich thought Lawler won (obviously he's a little biased)
Dominate??????!!!!!!!???? Did u see Babalu's face after the fight?
It doesn't matter what their faces look like, take Spencer Fisher vs Sam Stout 2, Fisher was busted up but he clearly dominated, look at Sherk's face after he fought Florian, he was busted up but clearly dominated, King Mo's face after his fight with Mousasi which he clearly dominated, Sodallah's face after he beat Baroni but clearly he dominated Baroni...some have scar tissue and some can weather storms from big shots that fighters like Lawler, Baroni, Florian elbows, and kick boxing like Stout can deal out...they land some clean ones that cut or bruise but it does not mean they won the over all fight if they were controlled for a majority of the fight and answer back like Babalu did...plus they fight with 4 oz gloves dude they are bound to bust something up somehow
wow. are u that bored?
No I just know MMA and this is an MMA forum...I pay attention so I like helping the casual fan who doesn't know what he's talking about...oh and you're welcome
robbie needs to go down to 170.
That's where Lawler spent most of his fighting career, at 170lbs and that's his proper weight class imo, where he performs best, i hope he drops straight back down but who knows, depends what they offer him i suppose. The fight went pretty much how i thought it would, Babalu getting the takedowns when he needed to and controling Robbie on the ground and avoiding the knock out when on the feet, Babalu's stand up looks to have improved too. I do like both these guys too but i like Robbie more and was pulling for him to get the KO, even though i had picked Babalu to win, i actually thought he would submit Robbie though but Robbie did well with his defence, was a good fight............
