According to report on MMA Fighting, Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem will square off against Fabricio Werdum, as part of promotion's Heavyweight Tournament. Overeem expressed his interest numerous times to fight Werdum, who defeated Fedor Emelianenko via a Triangle/Armbar submission last June.

MMA Fighting also give an outline of other tournament bouts:

The first two quarterfinal bouts will take place on Feb. 12, with Fedor Emelianenko taking on Antonio Silva, while Sergei Kharitonov will face Andrei Arlovski. Earlier Tuesday, MMA Fighting reported Emelianenko's contract extension with Strikeforce, paving the way for his entrance into the field.

The other two quarterfinal bouts include Josh Barnett facing Brett Rogers and Alistair Overeem taking on Fabricio Werdum, the last man to beat Emelianenko.

Alistair Overeem defended his Strikeforce title last year against Brett Rogers, and won two other titles, K-1 World Grand Prix and DREAM Heavyweight title. "The Reem" is currently 34-11 in his MMA campaign, finishing all of his fights since 2007. As for Fabricio Werdum, Vai Cavalo already defeated Overeem four years ago, back in PRIDE. Werdum fully recovered from a recent elbow surgery, but will be fight-fit only in March.

So who will win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament? Vote in the Poll below.

  1. 1. Josh Barnett
  2. 2. Fabricio Werdum
  3. 3. Andrei Arlovski
  4. 4. Alistair Overeem
  5. 5. Fedor Emelianenko
  6. 6. Sergei Kharitonov
  7. 7. Brett Rogers
  8. 8. Antonio Silva

Yea, much respect to the Reem... He was originally slated to face the winner of the tournament in a super-fight for the title, but he stepped up and said no, he wants to fight IN the tournament... Thats a dangerous move for a Champion, but obviously Overeem is out to prove he is the best... So props to the Reem.

I just don't see any of the other fighters being able to stop Rogers from pulling guard and submitting them. I hear he has a nasty gogoplata.

I don't see Overeem being stupid enough to jump into werdum's guard. Allistair wins it all.

I got Overeem winning this...I dont think Werdum will be much of a problem I see Barnett n Fedor being more of a competition for Overeem

nah man i think it's gonna be fedor. one loss in 10 years and he can only have learnt from it and gotten better. if it's a fight between him and reem i still pick fedor, he's stood with strikers like arlovski and cro cop in their prime and had great success, i reckon he could find alistair's chin.

the arlovski fight was hardly in his prime. when i see fedor truly bested, dominated or outskilled by an opponent where i can sit back and say that he's not the fighter he once was i'll stop picking him but we only got to see him fight for a minute in 2010, so it's hard for me to say he's lost it just yet.

Wow...super impressed! The prime is the UFC these days! If you want respect, **** shit up in the UFC!!!!! THe Reem is gonna shut Dana up and take his UFC gold son! You all will see!

The Reem doesnt give a **** about co-promoting. He just wants to throw down. He had like 4 fights last month all outside of his organization and won two belts while doing it. He's actually lookin for foe's to beat down!

Well you're blaming Fedor for things Overeem is doing as well, even worse. Overeem hasn't faced anyone in top 10 in the past years. Don't get me wrong, I think Overeem has the potential to be the number 1 in the world, but he hasn't done enough to prove it officially yet.

If Strikeforce wants to compete with the UFC, this is the kind of thing they have to do. This will DEFINITELY attract all hardcore mma fans, and plenty of casual fans also. Fedor vs Reem in the final, would be EPIC.

Its gotta be Reem, Fedor or Barnett. Only way I can see Reem losing is in a fight with Fedor by a crazy looping punch to his somewhat suspect chin. Besides that though, Reem has just about every factor of the fight game in his favor. Ridiculous strength, size, striking, ground and even reach, he will be a HANDFULL!

Sergei Kharitinov has wins over Overeem (big Overeem already) by KO!, Werdum by decision and Semmy Schilt with a weight disaventage of 50 Kg (110Lbs)!! by stopage!. Hes very good and extremly tuff, i just say dont count him out. He just never have been a big media personality

Reem was a HW but he wasn't as big as he is now. He has more neck and more skill now. I am not saying Sergei can't do it again but it is a different fight.

Holy shit this has me so excited, this will to me be the best and most important HW event since the demise of Pride. Tournament's are just so amazing and something I miss tremendously from the Pride days, not saying that fighters should fight more then once max twice in one night but there is not reason they can't space them out.

Also a really amazing line up of fighters, those that are not ranked in the top 10 right now are vets and have been earlier in their career so still deserve to be there.

I predict this will come down to Overeem V Fedor. I think that is a very hard fight to call but I am giving Fedor an edge because he has a huge speed advantage over The Reem. Remember, styles make fights kids. Rogers gave Fedor more trouble that he gave Overeem but that is because he style is to bully and Overeem is too big for that. Overeem has a very technical style so I think he will be less of a problem for Fedor in the cage. That said I would not put money on that fight. I am so glad Overeem is fighting Werdum first. That is also an interesting fight. II am calling Overeem in it but if the fight makes it to the ground I think Werdum will submit him. Overeem has a good ground game but not as good as Werdum's.

I think most fans are overlooking the fact that Werdum already has a win over Overeem and Fedor. It was a few years ago and the reem has looked much improved particularly his striking game and strength, but as much as you are praying for Fedor - Overeem there's no guarantee either will progress.

Going on past records Werdum should be favourite!!!

I do hope we get to see Fedor - Overeem though. There is no HW match up the UFC can do to match it.
