Rory MacDonald Believes Fight With Robbie Lawler Was Greatest Moment Of His Life

Rory MacDonald (18-3) and Robbie Lawler (26-10) went to war at UFC 189 back in July for the UFC welterweight championship. Lawler finished MacDonald in the fifth round via TKO after breaking “The Red King’s” nose early in the fight.

It was one of the sickest, bloodiest, bests fights that you’ll see in some time. MacDonald, who was in severe pain in and after the fight was once thought to be done fighting MMA following that fight by some “experts” but just one month following that fight, he’s already training.

“The reality is, he stopped me. I wasn’t slipping his punches when I should have been, I wasn’t using good technique and movement, you know? The foot was keeping me stationery, and he did what he had to do. He’s the champ for a reason. I learned from it.

“I think it’s going to help me grow as a martial artist,” MacDonald continued. “It shows me what it’s going to take to be a champion, and the changes I need to make to get to that level, to get a little bit better so I can get to that level.”

In what could be seen as odd, MacDonald revealed to Helwani that it was the greatest moments of his life.

“The greatest moment of my life,” MacDonald said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “The best experience, it was a real experience, it showed me who I was. It was the best moment of my entire life. Obviously I’m disappointed that I didn’t win, I wasn’t able to push through and stop him, but at the end of the day, it was just a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m grateful for it.”

MacDonald is a true pro as he praised Lawler following their fight by saying that he’s an amazing fighter.

“Robbie’s an amazing fighter, it’s amazing to fight against him,” he said. “Can’t wait to fight him again, we’re going to fight five more times, I bet. He’s the funniest guy in the world to fight. That guy brings the best in you for sure.”

UFC 189 took place on July 11, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. This event aired on pay-per-view, FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

While that fight is in the past, his future plans are not known. As for Lawler, he’ll defend his championship against Carlos Condit at UFC 193.

Only time will tell who MacDonald will fight next.

It was the first part of the 5th round not the 4th. It was one of the best fights I have ever watched and I have been watching since UFC 1. For Rory to say it was the best moment of his life…it really shows that he is meant to be a fighter.

I think Rory is falling short of the hype. He is immensely talented but has struggled vs Lawler twice. He is getting hit too much. Makes me Wonder if he’ll ever hit his stride.
