The UFC announced on Monday afternoon that UFC lightweight Gilbert Melendez tested positive for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites following his bout with Eddie Alvarez at June 13’s UFC 188 in Mexico City, a fight which he lost by split decision.

Melendez is currently on a two-fight losing streak. He’s been a pro since 2002 and in his last six bouts, he’s 3-3.

Melendez was scheduled to fight Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night 71 on July 15th, but that bout is now off due to the failed drug test.

The UFC issued the following on Monday:

Following his bout at UFC 188 in Mexico City on June 13, UFC lightweight Gilbert Melendez tested positive for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by our athletes. As a result of the positive test, Melendez has accepted a one-year suspension, effective from the date of the bout, for violating the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and Promotional Agreement with Zuffa, LLC.

“Regrettably, I tested positive in my post fight urine sample for UFC 188,” Melendez said. “I did not inject anything, but I am responsible and accept the consequences for the results.  I will make sure I am better educated about the products I use and their implications. Going forward I will ensure no products I use will contain banned substances. I am sincerely apologetic to everyone who supports me, including my fans, sponsors and the UFC.  I value your trust and respect and will do everything in my power to keep it.”

Melendez will no longer compete as scheduled on July 15. UFC officials are currently seeking a new opponent for Al Iaquinta, who was scheduled to face Melendez.

  • This sucksss soooo badddd!!! I wanted to see Iaquinta whoop his ass!

  • leonaidis

what!?!?! He’s not even Brazilian!!! I thought it was only Brazilian fighters who did PED’s reading the comments of many posting here on LK. Wait, what?? Most of MMA fighters busted for PED’s are Americans???? Nooooo, that can’t be…….

Breaking news, your drug test results are in, I’m sorry to inform you but your test came back positive for being a fucking moron. A minute silence is under way.

      • leonaidis

Just had a drug test, came back positive for cannabis, nothing else. So your information must come from the same place you get all of your facts. Your ass.

        • Space

Are you questioning the test results? Are you in denial like Vitor Belfort?

          • leonaidis

No I’m not denying anything, just admitted I got caught for using cannabis. And you do know that a drug test doesn’t test your mental qualities, right? And you wonder why nobody takes you seriously? Space walks in to a laboratory for a drug test and goes “hey, while I’m here do you mind testing my IQ”

          • Space

Where did I say Drug test? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

You can appeal the test if you would like to?

          • leonaidis

No I accept them, because it’s all a fantasy in your head and that says more about your mental health issues than it does mine. So you just keep on sitting at home giving your “tests” to people if that makes you feel better, but you should really see a professional about this.

          • Space

You also tested positive for being a weak, pussy boy. I can arrange some theorpy sessions for you??

          • leonaidis

Could you?? Are you going to give that “theorpy” what ever the hell that is?? I would love to see you calling ME a pussy to my face LOL. That will never happen.

          • Space

I would call you whatever I wanted to your face and you wouldn’t do anything about it. You’re a little old ass bitch.

          • leonaidis

            Right 🙂

          • paulol

            now now kids play nice

    • Falcon 4917

Brazilians just are more likely. you know like every 2nd fighter popped is Brazilian.

      • leonaidis

That’s not true. Check the statistics. Most fighters busted are from the good ol’ US of A.

        • Falcon 4917

Yes but a lot of the USA ones are marijuana and pain killers. Also the very testers over the past decade in Brazil are considered by many to be pro Brazilian athlete agenda cops. Hence the issue recently with Aldo etc. The whole country reeks of corruption and cheating with sports. The USA caught more with much stricter standards even if they even weren’t all that great. Since random testing has begun Brazil is 3 to 1 with USA.

          • leonaidis

Any amongst these many any one that has any knowledge about things? Or is it your personal opinion based on the fact that the Brazilian cases have gotten so much media attention, and perhaps you’ve been wronged by a Brazilian?? Because there are no facts to back that claim up. Again check the stats. It’s not because of weed and painkillers that the Yanks top the charts. It’s mostly steroids and stuff that covers up steroid use and other doping. I’m not saying the Brazilians are clean, they come second behind the americans. I’m just saying that it’s quite ignorant to point fingers at Brazil when you look at the whole picture.

          • Falcon 4917

I personally feel the Brazilians are far worse than they are made out to be. I feel it’s the place of choice for Brazilians who like to cheat. I personally have no beef with Brazil outside of their cheating culture to win. I believe it is passed on from their heros like the Gracies who are the biggest sore losers and liars in fighting sport. And yet I respect what they have brought to MMA outside of their personalities. My favorite fighters in order of over the years started with Royce, then Vitor, Chuck/Randy, Anderson/Forrest/Faber/Benson, and now Conor/Benson/Werdum. Many of my favorite fighters have been Brazilian but maybe you’re right about a distaste for them now because all my favorites from Brazil get busted for Roids. I just really Hope Werdum stays cool.

          • leonaidis

I’m just saying the PED problem is much worse in the US, but you not this hard on them. And you’re not alone, and that puzzles me.

          • Falcon 4917

I ripped Hendo, Chael and anyone else a new one everytime I heard they were on peds. But lately as random tests are becoming more popular the rates of brazilians getting popped is out pacing everyone. It’s also my suspicion of them hiding as best they can in their own country that seems to always have shady circumstances popping up concerning their testing not just their fighters.

          • leonaidis

but the stats don’t lie. The country with the biggest PED abuse culture is the USA. Even last year the majority of fighters busted came from the USA. More than Brazilians and Russians combined. Brazil is #2 and Russians #3 for PED use. So if there’s something fishy going on in Brazil, you bet your sweet arse that something even fishier is going on in the USA. But nobody seems to care, it’s just the Brazilians. And that’s dumb and ignorant.

          • Falcon 4917

I’m talking about the testing, more get caught in the USA because of less fishy business, hence why Vitor and many Brazilians love it down in Brazil.

  • Michael

Man this guy is really ugly. Muy Feo. I thought it was just the TV but saw him live at UFC 181 (when he got choked out by Petis) and man this guy ugly.

  • mmaohio33

Whoever wrote this is an idiot. People didn’t say ONLY Brazilians test positive, they say a lot of them do and if you would do a little bit of actual research you know why people claim that.
